Japan-based Shinoda Display has begun field-testing a very large, thin and bendable display [JP, PDF]at Tokyo Station. The 145-inch display is based on the company’s proprietary Plasma Tube Array (PTA) technology. It’s just 0.9mm thick and consists of six film panels that are bendable, which means they fit on curved surfaces.
Technically, those PTA displays are similar to plasma panels, but are made by using film electrodes and an array of glass tubes. The 145-inch monster display consumes up to 1,000W of electricity, weighs 180kg and shows content such as ads, clips and web sites. Too bad the speakers to the left and right look a little awkward.
Shinoda uses almost the same 145-inch display it unveiled to the general public back in May. But the field test, which lasts through September 4, marks the first time the company explores the device’s usability and acceptance. And you can actually buy the display: It’s yours for $430,000.

Or, you know, you can buy a projector for less than a grand nowadays…
Yes, but is it a FLEXIBLE projector? Nah, this seems rather over the top for personal use. However, I can see it being somewhat useful in business applications. However, at $430k I don’t think you are going to have a lot of takers just because it can bend to your will.
You’re just cheap! You can buy a new car for $10,000 and you probably think it’s as good as a Mercedes, BMW, Bentley, Rolls etc. There is a range of quality in everything so don’t dis it because you can’t afford it. LOL.
a large display can be installed in a limited space
The PTA to be used in the test has almost the same specifications as the 145-inch PTA that Shinoda Plasma announced in May 2009.
Just what we’ve always needed , an mc hammer felexible tv. ( 430k) there are better things to spend money on .
I want to play css on that thing!!!!!!!!!!!
Useless. Even for the rich. Now if they’re able to make a ’silver screen’ sized tv for theaters that show movies in true HD, now we’re talking.
But what the hell are you going to do with this? DOn’t get me wrong, if the real thing is without the seems of the other 6 panels and it’s HD, sure, I’ll take it. But who’s going to own this at that price tag?
Ah, little problem, tokyo Joe, my god damn power bill is going to be $800 a month! hahahaha
that is one big ass display.
and it drinks up ur electric bill, too.
looking cool has never been this expensive.
i am getting a bunch of these to give me 360 degree movies and virtual reality porn/shoot them ups……etc.need 5 million $$$.can’t i have any fun??
