9258885_rbThere’s a hell of a deal going on over at Best Buy, where you can pick up a terabyte of extra storage for about $70 shipped, or $65 if you feel like driving out and picking it up. The Western Digital MyBook series has been good to me and others I know, so it gets the CG thumbs up as far as that goes.

It’s the “Mac” edition, which probably just means it’s formatted in HFS+ instead of NTFS or FAT32. Reformat at will.

Order away, though it is backordered at the moment. This is the cheapest storage I’ve seen in a while, though, so it may be worth picking up even if you don’t have a need for it right now. They make great presents, too.

  • I have a My Book External Hard Drive, they suck something god awful. Stick with the Passport/Elements line, you’ll be much happier.

/owner of both a My Book and a Passport.

    • Really? I haven’t had any trouble with my 500GB My Book. granted, I haven’t used it THAT much, but hey.

      • It may be an issue they had with their older models that they long ago fixed. Mine isn’t brand spanking new or anything. It likes to freeze my computer up with the drive starts up, it doesn’t always get recognized by windows so you have to mess around with the cables a lot to get it working again and it requires an external power source unlike the Passport and new Elements drives, although that’s not really a complaint with the drive so much as its just nice to be powered through USB.

But my experience with WD and their Passports has always been amazing. My Passport is falling apart at the seams because I’m always throwing it around and stuff. I’ve had it for about 2 years now. Still works beautifully and I never have any problems with it at all.

  • These and most other external drives suffer from a similar fatal flaw. They have no built in fan, so the drive gets very hot and it disconnects when that happens. (owner of a 1TB WD My Book and a 1TB Hitachi External HDD) If you keep them ventilated with fans, they work great. I have mine sitting on the two fans of a laptop chill pad. I’m thinking about reversing the direction of the fans so cool air comes in from the bottom and hot air blows out through the top. It functions well as-is though so I’m tempted to just leave it.

  • Had a 1TB MyBook too which was handy when I was working between my laptop and home workstation and everything on my desk needed to sync. Didn’t have any problems but I prefer the Lacie ‘Porsche Design’ drive, with the biometric strip. Cooling is a problem for most of the big ones other than the 4YB raid stations you can get now. Bit much for my needs. Passport drives rule for the mobile creatives!

  • This is an awesome deal! Buy 10 of these and sell them on Ebay for $100 each. lol

  • Well I think that this model is great.
