The saddest robots in all of Singapore

BoingBoing points us to these creepy animatronics in Singapore’s Fort Canning Part where the British generals discussed surrender to the Japanese.

While many of us expect animatronics to be fun and whimsical, this dark journey into the heart of a failed colonial state certainly destroys those expectations. I mean at what point did Singapore decide that robots would be the best way to tell the story of a stodgy board meeting?

  • Wow John,

“Failed colonial state”? Way to paint a positive picture about someone’s country….

    Western imperialism in action perhaps?

The only reason they used robots is because the city-state (think Coruscant but much much smaller) has a bigger percentage of south-east Asians and the only Caucasians they got are people who come from the west to do business.

Dressing up Asians as the English would not only be convincing but pretty disingenuous to the struggle they faced so they resorted to amateur robotics (which have been around for over a decade).

Your insensitivity is surprising and frankly offensive.

  • and i have yet to visit this memorial site as a singaporean. i should go there this weekend or something i suppose.
