We just got our hands on the new iPod nano.
As you can probably tell from the shots, it’s a nearly inch-for-inch match with the last generation. That said, the new colors are absolutely gorgeous. Even in the fairly dim demo room, the colors popped.
We didn’t get to spend very much time with the camera, but the camera quality seemed on par with that of the iPhone and significantly better than what we would have expected.
The FM radio interface was great. While it initially couldn’t pick up a signal, all was well once they sunk a pair of headphones into the jack. The Shuffle uses the headphones as an antenna, and the radio started ticking away.
There are a few things within the FM player that weren’t mentioned during the presentation but that are quite neat. For one, you can scrub back up to 15 minutes. Additionally, you can tag songs that are playing over the radio, reminding you to purchase them next time you drop into iTunes.
We didn’t put the pedometer to the test as we weren’t about to sprint around the packed demo room, but the Nike+/Pedometer interface was in place and jampacked full off gradients. It’s about as flashy as it comes – but it looks great.

so, was this it? whats new in 3.1? I’m kinda glad i didn’t wake up early for this….
No the big news: Steve-O back on the stage, with a 20 year old liver.
Odd placement for the camera, don’t cha think?
Good point, but I think that unless the shutter release was on the edge (top) of the device, the nano’s size would make any lens placement odd and awkward.
Are people who buy a nano gonna pick one up for this camera feature?
Disappointing they did not put a camera in the iTouch. They think it would hurt iPhone sales?
yes..that is cool
Very catchy. The design and colors attracts a lot. Sure the iPod Nano is a rival to iPhone itself. All features are so good in new iPod and urges you to buy one.
why no Bluetooth, i have a to set of bluetooth headphones.. I love the idea, but i hate wires.. and also why not do HD 720p video, i got a Vado for cheaper than that..
Its £25 more expensive in the UK, thats A LOT, keep stiffing me Apple, cheers, do you not have an accounts package which understands exchange rates. I thought the UK and US had a “special friendship”
Well–they do have one, and it is indeed very special.
I know Apple inflates prices, but it’s worth noting that a part of it is because VAT is included in UK prices and not US prices.
re: “special friendship”
This might just be our retaliation for the Megrahi debacle :-)
Indeed it might be…
Sure as eggs are eggs its not because we suggested they start thier own NHS..
P.S. I’m an apple Fanboy, I have 3 mac’s a ipod touch, and was one of the UK’s first to buy and install snow leopard. I just think apple needed something big, to get past the perception of snow leopard.
But what do i know..
(OK, i want a new Nano, but just bought a Vado and B&O Bluetooth headphones..
However i’m in Las Vegas in 10 days, so who knows..
Somebody needs to upload some video footage to YouTube so we can check out the quality… Please?
yeah, I would like to see the quality on youtube or 12seconds.tv I am glad I didn’t get the last nano or ipod. I think the wheel takes up too much space now.. I don’t really like the aesthetics of the nano. sort of fugz. But I do need a smaller mp3 player for running. Nano or shuffle.. halp!
Agreed. I’m not exactly impressed by Greg’s photo, but let’s reserve our judgement until we see actual pictures and video from the camera. And then we can comment on how pathetically bad it is.
I agree I want to see the video quality cause my Flip Mino HD is very nice!
Any update on if the Touch will have a microphone also? Being able to use the touch as a VoIP phone in wi-fi hot spots would be awesome and probably enough to convince me to buy my first apple product in 4 years.
The big story for the iPod (nano) is video, of course. Video front and center. Jobs was not subtle about it — he sees a massive online video market opportunity that is still in “inning 2 of a 9 inning game.” He sees others seizing that early stage market opportunity. And he wants to take a big bite of that market not out of Apple (but out of others).
I disagree.
An FM radio with tagging is the big story. Effectively letting people purchase music from over the air radio (albeit with the delay of having to sync with iTunes) is a big deal for the music industry.
Stupid question (maybe) — can the camera take stills? I didn’t see this mentioned anywhere on the Apple site.
I went looking as well – no info on just taking a picture.
No – no photos. Just video.
I also think the placement of the camera is … um .. sub-optimal. Just looking at it, it will be impossible to hold the thing firmly in your hand and take video at the same time. You’ll have to hold it between your thumb and index finger. Very odd, but likely because they couldn’t jam in the lens behind the screen. It’s a case of pushing a square peg into a round hole.
Looks like a great device now though compared to the likes of the Flip. Bad buy Cisco! The Flip is history now …
I’m surprised they didn’t put a camera in the iPod Touch too. Kind of odd they would do video only for the iPod nano and not still pictures also.
this is the tiny ipod afterall – what do you expect
It also didn’t seem clear to me if you still need a Nike + dongle on the nano or if it was built-in like the touch
a whole lotta nuttin’
Somebody needs to tell Steve-O he put the camera on the wrong damn iPod. If the Nano does not have wi-fi then what’s the point?
Please post a video taken with it so we can judge the quality of the video camera. Is it’s video quality better than the flip or a cell phone?
I like to use different earbuds with my Ipod (sport versions stay in the ear better). Do you have to use the earbuds that Apple provides in order to use the FM radio?
