Hands-on with the 64GB iPod touch and iPod Shuffle “Special Edition”

There’s not much for us to say about either of these models. While it’s absolutely incredible that they crammed 64 GB into this razor thin iPod Touch, there’s nothing beyond that for us to touch on that can’t be said for past models. The other significant changes (50% speed boost and the addition of OpenGL ES) aren’t things we could test on the spot; while it certainly felt faster, we didn’t throw down with a stopwatch.

The “Special Edition” iPod Shuffle is quite stunning in person. That stainless steel is ..well, it’s a mirror. It gleens, it glistens. Unfortunately, the only thing it catches more than the light is fingerprints. Really – the demonstrator had to wipe it down with his shirt 4 times in the period of about a minute.

  • and RAM is upgareded from 128mb to 256mb too? not clear

  • 50% speed boost? The 2g ipod touch ran at 525mhz, not 400mhz like the iphone and iphone 3g.

  • So wait – correct me if I’m wrong – its exactly like the iphone, without the phone features, but it’ll cost around AU$600, but the phone costs about AU$800 outright… so why would I buy an ipod touch again?

  • because its $200 less ,and perhaps because there is no 64gb iphone !

  • What? No 3gs video camera?!? More memory is good, faster processor, okay; it’s not that I thought my 32 gig 2nd gen was particularly slow.

If you’ve already got a 2nd gen ipod touch, I don’t see a compelling reason to shell out the money to upgrade.

  • The reason I’ll buy the 64GB touch is simple. I’ve had a 60GB 5th Gen ipod for FOUR years. My music/video collections is about 40-45GB. I’ve been waiting for a touch that can hold all of my stuff.

    • LSU_Fan is operating with the exact same mindset as I am, except I’m using a 4thgen iPod Photo 60GB, and my music collection is about 40GB.

I didn’t want to buy the classic because I didn’t want to spend that kind of money without some type of technology upgrade. Adding just video really didn’t do it for me with the 5thgen and classic. Touch has a lot to offer, especially now that they’ve added OpenGL.

Anyone wanna buy a PSP real cheap? :)
