Mea culpa. I thought 3.1 wouldn’t show today but I’m drunk most of the time. The big news? Genius for apps, allowing you to search for new apps based on apps you already own.
3.1 will also include ready-made iTunes ringtones from 4 labels. Each cost $1.99 each. The new iTunes supports app management within iTunes, ensuring you get a better and more logical look at all your apps. The app management works just like you think it does – the app pages appear and you drag them around the page.

3.1 is available now for download. Update away. Touch users note: this is a free update for all.

Wow, so users will be able to easily grab all the ifart applications at once. What a complete un-newsworthy item.

Anybody have a download link?
My iTunes and Iphone still think 3.0.1 is the current release…
Other than app management and Genius, is there any reason for me to upgrade? I think I’ll pass on 3.1.
yawn
A whole event like this to see Jobs presenting a minor update… you mac maniacs nutz… Where is innovation in this company, I’m already tired from iphone, more than two years and the same thing… where are other form factors, I nees a phoene with QWERTY, I’m concluding that Iphone effect al almost to be over like the Motorola V3… Now looking for a new nice toy… is that Nokia N900??
No Nokia :) still too early for this Symbian version IMO..
just think about one of Android phones, really good devices and nice software..
That’s because you’re an idiot.
Sounds like a great addition! :)
Genius for apps sounds promising, going to download the iPhone 3.1 update now to see what recommendations are presented..
Voice control still only on the 3GS?
mms?
MMS is already available for most carriers, but AT&T will be rolling it out on September 25th for iPhone users.
Seems worthwhile just for remote passcode lock via your mobileme account. So don’t passcode lock all the time, but if you can’t find your phone… Also, voicecontrol over bluetooth will allow me to use my jawbone again.
Does any know if 3.1 will disable teathering on iPhone 3G using http://www.iphone-notes.de/mobileconfig ?
Mike
yep, it disables teathering. have not seen a workaround yet.
All of these small updates, they just need one big one
New ringtones are $1.29 each, not $1.99 each, and iPod Touch users have to pay $4.95 for the upgrade, it’s only free to iPhone users.
It’s not that difficult to follow along with EVERY other tech blog that covered the iPod event today.

Here’s a list of some features worth mentioning:
Improved Wi-Fi
Faster boot up time and various speed improvements
Voice Control over Bluetooth now available, allowing users to Initiate calls and control music playback via Bluetooth headsets (however, voice control while plugged in to car audio systems no longer works)
Improves reception
iTunes Store icons rearrange themselves back to default after opening and closing the app
Under usage tab in settings able to view data sent and received over tethering
…..and the tethering hack is gone with the OS 3.1 update :(
Acckkk! just updated to 3.1 . . . or tried to. Phone now a useless brick . . . arrghh.
My custom ringtones are gone! They still show up in iTunes, they sync with the iPhone, but they don’t show up as options when I select a contact and try to update the ringtone.
Is anyone else seeing this problem? Could it be that Apple is once again blocking ringtones that aren’t purchased?
I am seeing the same issue. I would really like to get my ringtones back. I dont mind paying $1.29 for a whole song but not 20 seconds of a song.
3.1 killed WiFi on my 3GS. Have seen a couple other people mention this on Twitter. Proceed with care if WiFi is a must-have for you.
Actually, a reboot of my router fixed this. woot.
iPhone 3GS has an ECID. It stands for Exclusive Chip ID. When iTunes starts the 3GS restore process, it contacts Apple servers to generate signatures just for your device. ECID is like a security layer blocking jaibreak. So 3GS owners need to be extra cautious and for the time being not dare update to 3.1 firmware. http://bit.ly/16lL56
The OS is $4.95 for touch users, not free as you said. Apple totally abuses its user-base again.
omg i just bought it and it doesn’t work! i need help… please someone tell me how to get it to work. cause i mean i downloaded it but nothing is popping up… i am gonna keep trying and i will update you guys every now and then. byeeeeeeee
