The iPod Nano, long beloved by joggers and the highly mobile now has a video camera, microphone, and speaker built in.

iPod Nano will now have a Cover Flow, Genius Mix, and Voice Over support, allowing you to read out the names of songs as they’re played. The Nano also has a build-in pedometer and voice recorder.
The Nanos come in red, pink, orange, silver, black, purple, blue, green, and yellow. They will cost $179 for 16GB and $149 for the 8GB.

why no camera on the iPod touch?
This is for sure to come shortly, maybe in November.
Maybe the software for Touch is not ready to deliver yet, I am sure the hardware exist.
I am surprised to not see iTunes LP and The Beatles.
Software for the touch? Just copy the camera app!
It is a lot easier to do video, since the photo sensor resolution does not need to be all that high. 640x 480 VGA makes for pretty fair video, but only yields a 307K pixel still photo – which is way below the current 2 Meg Pixels expectation set by most cell phones.
Maybe the Nano does have a sensor capable of reasonable quality still photos, but if it did, I would have thought developing the firmware/software for processing and storing still photos would have been much easier to execute than processing/storing a video stream.
So, I’d suspect that a still photo shooting Nano – beyond low quality vidcaps – will need to wait for the next generation or so.
Not sure that it matters all that much anyway. Doesn’t almost every ones’ cell phone already shoot photos (and videos) with an ability to immediately send them to friends?
It is good that they — finally — caught up with the competition by adding an FM radio. A year or so ago, my wife bought a Samsung P2 over the Nano… solely because the P2 featured a radio that she could use to tune in the FM broadcasted audio at her gym (TV audio, workout tracks, and the like).
Meanwhile, I’m VERY interested in the new 64 GB iTouch to replace my iPod Classic. It even has a 50% faster processor, and adds Open-GL graphics! There seems to be some confusion as to the price – I’ve seen $399, and now I see that they are dropping it to $279 to compete with the new Zune HD.
IF the price is $279, I’ll be in line at my local Apple store with the masses shortly.
The 64 GB iPod Touch certainly won’t be $279 – that’s the 32 GB version.
I rather enjoy having a Zune, it’s just basic yet better than an iPod because there’s still lots of people that have one… I bought mine and it is 120GB and it was 150$ LESS than an iPod of the same GB. What does the iPod 120GB do, that the Zune doesn’t? I can even share everything in my Zune with people close to me. It has a scanner built right in. I can wirelessly sync to my PC!
I WAS WONDERING THE SAME THING? IF THEY CAN PUT A CAMERA ON A NANO WHY NOT A IPOD TOUCH???
they said it will be coming soon, it looks really cool on the ipod nano to tho, does anyone know how much it would cost??
*in pounds :)
Happy! At least got a camera in iPod Nano. Looks cool. But how come it was impossible for Apple to not give a camera option in iPod Touch?
I think Apple is in a plan to organize another to event to give the surprises it failed to give now. If so the event announcement will be a great surprise.
lol. anyone else think thats just a little funny? f”great surprise” that the thing had a camera slot. They just took it out at the last minute. hopefully we can find out why. it was probably for a really good reason though. (sell more nano’s)
I know right! The iPod Touch is WAY more high-tech than any other iPod Apple has made
Apple continues to lead on innovation and quality. I wish I could step into a time machine to 1995 with this iPod to show it off to my friends. It is really amazing how far entertainment technology has come, many of which is thanks to Apple.
Is the pedometer their way of giving the finger to Nike+?
HAHA! i guesse!
Wow, the Nano is really growing in features. Soon they won’t be able to call it “Nano” anymore :P
I think this is the worst one of these events in the last 2 years except for seeing Steve back…totally lame…
I agree with this guy!
Ok, let me see…. they added FM radio, check. They added voice recorder, check. I have had media devices for years that had those things, but only Apple can usher in the second coming with that. Same thing with the iPhone… they are coming out with MMS for the iPhone…. ooohhhhhh… Apple is so cool and innovative. Sounds to me like Apple doesn’t innovate as good as people give them credit for.
I hate these idiotic, intellectually dishonest comments. Like, how are you making this comment without MENTIONING the video camera? Obviously the video camera is the heart of the redesign, and having a camera in a device this small, a device that also happens to be the most popular MP3 player in the world, and keeping it at the same price point, IS “so cool and innovative” and is going to kickstart the market for personal video recorders in a way that no other product has. Guaranteed.
Give me a break… my 2-year old media player has an FM radio in it that shows the name of the song and artist that is singing it. Nothing new. My point was that just 12 months ago the Apple fanboy pontificators were proudly claiming things like “Apple recognizes that noone wants a radio in their devices anymore… that is just stupid.” And today they are saying “Oh wow, it’s so cool… it even has a radio!” Please. Once again we see the hypocrisy on display from those people who think Apple does nothing wrong and they are the source of all things cool. Far from it.
Hel-looo! McFly! Anybody home?
You aren’t paying attention. Integrated v-i-d-e-o camera. Your two year old radio does not have that. The new Nano is the new small and slick digital video recorder/player (compare it with the hugely popular Flip) that just happens to play MP3s, movies, and FM radio.
Oh, right, I guess I should just shut up then. I mean, after all, Steve Jobs saw fit to bequeath us with this hallowed ground of technology gold, so we just get on our knees and thank God for his kindness and wisdom.
The video camera shoots the video equivalent of a cellphone video camera from 3 years ago. Big deal. I am sure Steve Jobs a great deal on a whole shipment of those video cameras from the cellphone manufacturers who were looking to offload them.
wow, highly emotional over an electronics company are we?
Apple’s as big as it is because of innovation…not invention. There’s a big dif in those two words.
No Apple has not be the first to have any of the features associated with its devices. But it was the first company to integrate many of them with accessible and smooth operation.
People are interested in more then just features. They want intuitive functionality presented in an emotional satisfying manner. Apple understood this and that is why they’ve been successful in recent years. From their devices functionality, to their design, to their advertisement, they caught on to the wants of their consumers.
yea, your media device from a few years ago can do many of the things the ipod nano can, but the overall experience with the device is not as satisfying to the general consumer market, and that is why your “media device” from two years ago is just that, “a media device from two years ago” and not an IPOD.
but in the end it doesn’t matter cuz its just a friggen company. If their products please you, buy them. If they don’t, don’t. End of story.
Ken, we can’t escape this fawning coverage and blabbering on and on and on, because it is everywhere we turn. We are subjected to this endless stream of gushing goo.
My ‘old’ device is still quite remarkable and more than satisfying, I use it every day, and one of the reasons I love it is precisely because it doesn’t have Nano or Apple written on it.
I think that’s the formerly hugely popular Flip
I totally agree with Steve. The so-called creative company can only come up with a lousy camera that most people will never bother to use anyway.
You only use iPod exclusively when you’re in the gym, outdoor jogging, or in a car. When you’re busy working out, running, or driving; how many people you know bother to take picture or record a video during those moments?
Outside those few occassions, everybody has a cellphone, which probably take better picture and video compare to the one Nano has.
Apple is being dumb.
STEVE! you dont understand…i have an ipod touch and the thing about it is its like actually saving ppl money!
why would you spend $100 on a mp3
another $100 on a camera
another $100 on a video recorder
another $20 on a voice recorder?
you see? steve jobs is having all this stuff into one small hand held easy to carry device BECAUSE
why would you be spending $300 on the stuff that is spreate and more to carry then 1 thing for $100 that is easy to carry and has the EXACTE same features..??? GET MY POINT? yes i bet your
“2 year old” media player is working fine but is it really worth it spending $300 on the camera you want and the voice recorder and video and mp3? no its not…..its better to spend the $150 and get all the same features…..and beside, APPLE tm…is a AWESOME company…..very few flaws….my sister has the mac and i have the ipod touch…..apple has defined technology in a whole new way to ppl so they can understand….apple has never let me down and has not to MILLIONS of other ppl either….
and since apple is so DIFFERENT!!! it is worth it to spend your money on because a 10$ mp3, that repquires batteries and spend 7$ on batteries every time and another 7$ on camera batteries, and 20$ on a microchip for the camera and buy a $5 tape and $7 batteries for your voice recorder,,,,get it? no one is blaming you, you have your opinion and it is you dont think its worth it, and we have ours which we think its worth it? NO HARM NO FOUL!
so enjoy!
There’s still a lot of people who don’t have a smartphone, and most basic or feature phones don’t have much storage capacity, which video eats up real fast. It’s the combination of (1) something you’re probably carrying anyway + (2) it’s easy enough to use and has enough capacity + (3) it’s easy to get the video out of it. The last one is critical; the iPhone leads on Flickr not because there’s a lot of them out there, but because it’s easy to upload…
Damn Steve!! Stop bragging about your cd player! Don’t you understand? No MP3 or MP4 has EVER had a video camera! Not all cellphones have music, or movies!
Why are you even here? If you’re not satisfied with the new Nano then go invent your own and we’ll be judges of which is more better.
Stop trippin’ on the iPods and most of all, Apple!
Um lets not forget about unfair practices of not allowing others to use your software. If apple allowed that you wouldn;t even care about what the hardware is. Apple computers aren;t any btter build quality or anything. They only thing that makes any difference is the OSX.
Steve’s analysis seems spot on to me. Apple rarely leads on raw features. Their lead comes from superior usability and better marketing. Part of that marketing is to make their products sound smashingly innovative and cool even when, as Steve correctly points out, competitive MP3 players have had those features for years.
I guess the video camera is awesome for the relatively small fraction of people who a) want to shoot low-grade video, b) don’t have a video-capable cellphone or video-capable digital camera, and c) were already going to upgrade their iPod. But taking a cellphone camera and putting it another device isn’t particularly innovative.
William, don’t confuse these folks with facts. They don’t want to hear that. The truth can sometimes be painful to swallow, especially on this day when Apple fans are fainting in the streets because Steve Jobs is back.
Right. So innovative to put a video camera into their mp3 player, just like Archos did four years ago.
All that Apple has done is combine features that others already had, into an admittedly small and nice form factor.
The new nano is nice, and I’ll probably get one for my wife for Christmas, but don’t pretend like this is some huge new revolutionary feature.
She’ll be delighted with it.
Colin, I really fail to see what the big deal is a of adding a VGA quality video camera to the Nano. Most, or at least many, cell phones already have VGA quality, or better than VGA quality, video recording. Mine certainly does.. not that I have ever used it.
And while I MAY have my MP3 player (a trusty iPod Classic) at hand, I ALWAYS have my cell phone at the ready. So, should some weird urge over come me, and I simply must shoot low-res video, my cell phone would seem to be the answer. As a bonus, i will be able to share my video masterpiece with whomever via MMS texting or email immediately.
As I stated before, the FM radio IS a long overdue improvement. And the Nano’s ability to “tag” a tune for later look up and purchase via iTunes seems to be a very useful feature.
Or how…
“The new FM tuner lets you see the names of songs and artists. And two amazing features — iTunes Tagging and Live Pause — make listening to the radio nothing like listening to the radio.”
It’s not just an FM tuner…
you mean like the one Zunes have had for a couple years now, where you see the titles and can buy directly, but over wi-fi on the zune? It’s just a digital tuner.
C’mon Devin… that’s not fair. I mean, this is Apple’s day here, so let’s not bring up the fact that Microsoft actually innovated on something before Apple did.
The best iPod is the Nano, because of it’s compact form factor. It’s the best device I’ve found for the gym or a run and this update makes it better. iPhone, iPod Touch, and Zune are too big.
If I had to choose between a ZuneHD and an iPod touch, I’d seriously consider the Zune because of it’s superior video features. However, the truth is that I’m not interested in either because I already have an iPhone in my pocket and there isn’t enough additional reason to consider getting a Zune as well. So, until the Zune comes with an integrated phone, Apple wins with the best hand-held device and the best sports device. And that’s without even considering the App Store.
God damn, you guys are great! This stuff is fantastic! Steve, Devin, William, & everyone against the New iPod, Apple, or ANY iPod for that matter gets my eternal gratitude for posting slandering comments on this page.
I have been waiting to buy the Touch with camera. I keep waiting.
I love it. When is this going to be available in the United Arab Emirates?
Guy’s these products are now out!! and avaliable on the apple store.
cheers
If they are looking to compete in the athletic / runners market I’d love to see a version of the iPod Nano with GPS built-in like the Garmin Forerunner.
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=230
It’s more accurate than the pedometer, if it’s anything like the Nike+ version which I had a hard time keeping calibrated to different workout speeds.
Looks to me like the perfect tool for perverts – walking around with a very discreet video camera disguised as an ipod – loads of privacy violation potential!
Disguised as an iPod? It is an iPod.
Silly kids. it still is only like 8 gigs? -camera, +hardrive space is what they should have done. I would rather have my origionally beautifully screened zune strapped to my arm in the gym then this little gimmic.
I would recommend the people reading take time and try all the devices before they spout at the mouth about things they dont know.
As well, took ipod long enough to get a radio and a decent screen. Oh yea and the wifi, oh wait. no wireless sync for the ipod yet?…..how sad…..
Troll 1, mac fanboy kids 0.
FM tuner and cam in the nano? Why not? These aren’t ground breaking technologies, no, but they are features consistent with the purpose of the device. These additions do add value and keep the product relatively fresh. Let’s face it: there’s not much else Apple can do to the nano without changing the sector of the market it caters to, or until they are prepared to give it the kind of major overhaul that would require a longer dev cycle.
Of course, totally agree… what else could they do but what they did?? But my whole point with my posts here is that Apple fanboys make me sick, with their gushing and fawning over how awesome these products are, and how innovative, and yada yada yada. There is nothing new here, and I am tired of all this sickening coverage.
I like Apple products, but I know what you mean because I feel the same way about people who like twitter.
Oh sure. Nobody likes fanboys. And personally, I haven’t owned an Apple product since 1986, when I was 10. Still, I think the fanboy bashing is starting to get just as irrational as the fanboyism itself.
Now, if the nano cam could shoot in 720p/1080i, that would be serious news.
Totally agree with that dude. why would someone shoot less quality with something they have to wait till they are home to upload? When (im talking fanboys here) they have thier Iphone which im sure has an ap for that. lol.
My phone does it, and its just a dumb phone. (no OS like winmo, android,or mac)
For ‘The Flip’, can we say deadpool?
http://blog.endeavourpartners.net/2009/09/09/flip-the-flip/
You would think so. I guess it will depend on video quality. Unless the Flip has a lot better video quality, it’s going to get squeezed out by devices like the Nano or the iPhone 3GS.
This year’s event is a totally blah moment. Gonna keep an eye on the next Android phone.
i wish i had waited for 4-5 months….i have ipod nano 4g…but this 1 is a beauty with all the features i wanted (except fm) fm is of no use for ipod…..
Wee~
Well, I’m not gonna really brag, because other mp3 players had these function except pedometer[which sounds, very very wrong], but I really can’t find other mp3 players anywhere in my suckish country, so I’m just gonna go with iPod Nano 5th Gen anyways…
I hate how it doesn’t have still picturing anyways.
I guess they added the video function to cope with our magic video provider; youtube.
What I want to know is why the hell isn’t a radio built into this supposed new iPod Touch. The Nano was never my thing, though I’m glad there’s a market for it, I’m kinda wondering why isn’ t there a built in radio to the latest iPod Touch that has this nice pause and tag feature?
The camera question is second on my list, c’mon what gives here? Before you go and tell me “well you have apps that can give you radio” I don’t want to connect to the lousy internet on my iPhone which is subpar and has lousy coverage anyway to listen to a radio station “online” It seems to me it would be less of a battery drain having a fm tuner built in rather than having to listen to an online radio station. No radio apps, to the best of my knowledge have this cool pause and tag feature the new Nano sports. Seriously guys, why did Apple skimp on the built in radio for the Touch? I gotta ask about that.
Can it also capture a photo or only video ?
can it also capture a picture? how many megapixels does it have ?
from what i have read everywhere it just does video.
hey guys,
just wondering does it take pictures? i think it only does vidos, do u no if the one coming out soon can take pictures??
