Uh oh, sounds like there’s some bugs being introduced into the gilded cage that Mac users seem to enjoy so much. Turns out that the new version of iTunes is deeply attached to Safari. This is causing problems for users of older versions of the browser, and also for users that have pre-release versions of Snow Leopard.
In most cases, it’s fairly easy to get around this, all you have to do is reinstall Safari and it’ll work. There have been some reported cases where that solution hasn’t worked, and for those unlucky people, there isn’t an answer yet. There’s also a problem with the Genius Mixes. Safari is again at fault, it’s causing the Genius Mix feature not to show up in the iTunes listings. In that situation, the best solution is to go to the iTunes store menu, and update Genius. If it’s still broken, you’ll have to turn off Genius and then turn it on again. Apple seems to have created quite a mess with their lastest software release.

you mean apple fans don’t keep their software up to date?
For shame!!!!
I thought everything Apple “just works?”
I didn’t experience either of those problems.
But I keep my stuff up to date.
Installed the updates and it’s wiped iTunes from my computer! It says the software is damaged/incomplete, and there is no trace of it apart from (thankfully) my remained music files :(
i have also installed the updates and found to my horror that it said my software was damaged and wiped it off my itunes…how do i recover my libary as the music is stored on an external hard drive ?? i am not a computer buff so please explain in basic terms lol
ps this problem is on my mac book
Didn’t Microsoft tie their browser to applications in the OS one time? What happened with that again?
if you use software update, shouldn’t it all be updated already? I haven’t had any problems but I keep my stuff updated all the time. Why wouldn’t anyone want to stay up to date? http://ziggytek.com/
Why would anyone want to stay up to date just for the sake of being up to date? I chose not to update Safari because I don’t use it. It would have been nice if Apple mentioned that the iTunes update was dependent on the Safari update for more than just the iTunes store (which I don’t use).
I do stay up to date just for the sake of it. Sounds silly but it bothers me to know there are updates out there and I don’t have them. I feel like ‘I might need them someday’ so I update when I can.
I got Snow Leopard at WWDC and have Safari 4.0.3 already. I installed iTunes 9 and got this error. It says I need to update, but I already have the latest version. Ugh!
It seems that the more successful Apple becomes, the more people want to make mountains out of molehills.
Seriously, I don’t doubt that some people may have run into problems, but suddenly every issue is portrayed as the Apple Apocalypse, with Apple hater commenters nodding in rote.
Seriously, people need to get a grip. If there is an issue, it bears merit whether 1% of users are affected by it or 10%. These articles all make it sound like 100% unmitigated disaster and such know-it-all sensationalism serves this site very badly, no matter how much satisfaction the Apple haters get.
Apple criticism is turning into a ridiculous and embarrassing caricature and reporting on it is become more and more useless, e.g. the boy who cried wolf.
The furor whenever an Apple app or computer blows up is partly because Macs’ advertisements and branding (and pricing) are based on the idea of them being without flaws like this.
yup. that’s why it’s called advertising. are you one of those people who believe advertising?
Oh noes! How will I buy 128kbps mp3’s!?
Oh yeah, I don’t have a crapintosh.
Oh yeah, I wouldn’t buy from the iTunes store.
That’s a dumb ass statement -> they don’t sell 128kbps MP3’s as a standard. Their STANDARD is APPLE LOSSLESS or ACC or MP4 type files predominately. SOME OF U PPL/HATERS CAN BE REDICULOUSLY STUPID. iTunes is a Phenominal audio converter for ANY CD audio file u possess. AND is great on BOTH MAC & PC u fool…
did ms figure out how to use mp3? how about mp 4 or acc? oh!
obviously you don’t have a mac so you settle for less out of ignorance
you don’t buy from itunes? i don’t either. i write my own music. try that on vista
Try it on Vista? I use Windows 7. And Ableton, and FL Studio. And a bunch of other 3rd party programs, also available on PC and mac.
@ UR Mac – iTunes does not offer AAC and Apple lossless as standard from its store. Its 128kbps mp3 formal, and thats it. AAC and the other formats you mention are options available for ripping music from a CD. You clever dick.
ableton and fruity loopsl are nice but limited. loops are just loops (yes! i know you CAN record live on those programs). i use dp and pro tools. leopard and sl aren’t fully compatible with dp or pt (last i heard) so i’m making do w/tiger.
from my experience, w7 and vista are disasters to set up, debug, fix and find the correct drivers for. while everyone is free to choose their own poison, i just say no to windows 8-)
What are you talking about? I bought a song through iTunes a couple of weeks ago and it’s 256KBs AAC.
this is the planet eatth. nothing is perfect. even gilded cages have creaky hinges now and then and besides itunes updates are a loooooong ways from vista. hows that one working for ya? yeah i have a pc but i just use it for for book keeping and word processing, nothing too demanding. git a little bit of music creation going on and it crashes HARD
enjoy it windows users. i be laughing again soon 8-)
No problems with iTunes 9 for me either. Downloaded, ran, that’s it. Like most Apple apps & updates, everything went as planned. It must be a foreign concept to some users of that ‘other’ OS.
Why can’t I (on itunes 9) look for apps by category as I did on itunes 8? There was a selection on the left side where I could click on Weather, Utilities, games etc. Now I don’t see a selection and they are grouped in one large group.
I have had none of these problems with iTunes 9 running on my 2007 Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard. My main gripe is that iTunes 8 had a nice black background to beautifully display all the album thumbnails on. Now suddenly Apple has decided for these views and for the iTunes store to make the background white! I wasn’t too concerned about this at first as I figured I would just go into preferences and change it back to black just like i can with iPhoto, but oh no, alas Apple doesn’t even give us that option so we are stuck with the yucky white. Hopefully there will be a fix for this in the future as the Apple forums are a buzz with similar complaints!
when I ran the updates like I always do when it tells me to, it made the mac get stuck in a loop trying to download the update but could not.
seems it corrupted the Ethernet connection. ended up having to reload the operating system to get it running again. and now I am afraid to try to run itunes updates but cant run itunes as installing the new operating system itunes cant access the files.
this new update deleted all my music from itunes. now, i have to go back to my itunes music folder and import all the tracks back! it also deleted my podcast subscriptions and podcasts that I previously downloaded!
This is going to take a very very long time to get all my songs and mixes back! gawd!
hi denise,
what os are you running? i just had a similar problem 10.4.11 you’re stuff isn’t gone, it’s just invisible.
i had to get apple to send a 10.4 cd, i had a download upgrade from 10.3
reinstall the os and when it asks you if you want to archive the install, click yes.
then i had to download the updates again but when i was done, everything was restored. more than a pain in the butt, i had my original music going through itunes. i thought it was gone. the new itunes wouldn’t even see my backup on an esata drive (external serial ATA drive) but it was just a fixable software glitch
good luck
john
ok people calm down.
what is with all the hostility over laptops.
it is just a laptop! whether its mac or pc
GET OVER IT!!
welllll, it’s a five year old desk top, not a lap top. but! when you are right! you are right! mac 10.4.11 on a dual core g5 and xp pro on p4.
vista reminds of when ms put out with ‘95. owners spent 2 years debugging for ms and then it worked well. ‘i spent those 2 years running 3.1 ‘98 was a disaster, ME was worse, xp seems pretty bullet proof and owners have been debugging vista for a year now(?)
i haven’t upgraded os because my software mfgs are just getting around to being compatible with leopard and snow leopard
