This doesn’t make a lot of sense. Apple launched all kinds of crazy stuff at their event last week yet they didn’t mention most of them. FM radio? Wasn’t really talked up. The secret slurp folder in iTunes? Ditto.
So now it seems that the iPod touch firmware now only costs $4.95 now, down from $9.95. WTF, right? It would have been nice of Apple to tell us. What else are we missing? A mini robotic dinosaur included in the box with every 64GB touch?

Wait…has it always been this way? I’ve been considering getting an iPod Touch, but I’d have to pay for each firmware upgrade?
Just every major firmware upgrade. 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 etc etc. It was $10, but I guess they’ve decided to drop the price in half.
Do yourself a favor and get a Zune HD. Double the storage for the same price, nVidia Tegra, OLED Screen, HD Radio, no iTunes, Not a complete finger print magnet, pretty good looking, 720p out via HDMI… lots of goodies with the Zune HD. The ONLY thing it doesn’t have is apps. However, it does have Marketplace, so I imagine it’s only a matter of time before it gets apps or someone jailbreaks and puts in their own underground app store like Cydia.
Watch the Keynote again, they did say it was $4.95.
Seems like a real dick move to make people pay for firmware upgrades. Maybe they can just tack on a flat firmware upgrade fee with each newborn’s birth certificate.
It’s only $4.95 for people upgrading from 1.0 or 2.0 software it’s free if you are upgrading from 3.0.
sort of like Cisco…
I thought the firmware upgrade fee for ipod owners was only between major versions, like 2.0 to 3.0, not 3.0 to 3.1, right?
Its for people who still haven’t upgraded from v2. They’ve just discounted the price while giving you the latest update.
There is a fee to upgrade firmware? I’m considering getting one of the new Touch’s, glad I found out about that ahead of time.
Apple, you want to make the iTouch a better web browser?
Put Adobe Flash on it.
Pleaseeeeeee………
This is another reason for me to hate Apple. They charge for firmware? Thats just retarded. I’ve never known anyone to charge for firmware. I’d never buy an ipod touch. I’ll take a Zune HD any day.
You didn’t pay for Windows or anything like that? You pay for firmware all the time, they just usually include it in the device you’re buying so you don’t notice.
People don’t work for free you know.
$5.00 for a firmware update?! Sometimes I think Apple just likes to see how far they can go with charging their customers for things that other companies customers get free of charge. Looks like they can go pretty far, $5 for PMP firmware, $30 for an OS service pack. I guess no price is too high as log as your device is “sexy”.
lol where are you complaints about a $300 upgrade for a windows service pack? which essentially copies everything from leopard lol
Meanwhile, Apple’s supposed $30 “service pack” included a rewrite of 90% of the applications, massive speed and battery life increases, complete 64-bit stability (Vista 64 = most crash prone OS the world has ever known) and grand central dispatch… all of this on top of an OS that has never had a virus.
$5 to $10 is nothing for a OS upgrade.
Windows 7 most certainly is not a service pack, and it’s not $300 either. Home Premium (which is all most people will need) costs $120 for an upgrade.
Snow Leopard doesn’t even run in 64-bit mode by default, you can’t claim “complete” stability as there’s always a chance something will go wrong… and can you demonstrate these “massive speed and battery life increases” or are you just going by what Apple says?
running snow leopard right now… All but two apps are running in 64 bit mode.
This is not a firmware upgrade, but an OS upgrade. You pay for a new version of windows, right?
Same here. It’s more like apple is giving this free for iphones (so far).
You don’t have to pay for anything.
The iPod Touch you BOUGHT, whenever you bought it, still has EVERY feature you paid for, and that was available, at the time you bought it.
You’ll get the security fixes for free.
Jesus, people will whine about anything.
What assholes, firmware updates for everything else are free. Guess there are consumers stupid enough to pay for that trash.
itz ridiculous,no need to pay for this……….
Or you can simply say Apple to f**** off and upgrade to latest iPod OS 3.1 without paying, here’s the simple trick :
http://www.scribd.com/doc/19674509/Upgrade-Apple-iPod-To-OS-31-Free
Apple’s never had an OS virus because nobody has ever done anything serious with a Mac.
What, did you think your CS-Suite Running toy is being used to hold thirty million credit card numbers anywhere? Do you think there are ranks of Yogurt-smoothie-coloured bubbles in Vegas casino’s doing crowd prediction? Do you think the computational fluodynamic model of the Joint strike fighter is loaded on a macbook pro with it’s hyper-nifty OS?
SAP, Peoplesoft, Oracle Spatial GIS server, CATIA, MRI Visualization, Enova, Websphere, Google campus-the apps that do the work while you sleep and keep planes in the air, do you think there are any silver cubes, wavey cabinet’s or snot-nose hipsters are present in any of these places?
No, the reason PC OS’s are prone to viruses is because they’re used to store information that people want to get at because it contains trade secrets, design models, analyses, confidential information, classified information, cures for diseases, genome’s, stock trades, bank loans, credit scores and tactical strike locations for predator B drones armed with hellfire missiles. There are no viruses for macs because the only things people do with macs is browse the web, play games, download music and videos, edit sound and video and render animation.
Put another way, Al Queda doesn’t have teams of programmers trying to hack into Ad agencies and steal their proofs for next months issue of Cosmo, so there isn’t a lot of experience hacking mac exploits to pass onto low-level hacks trying to score credit card numbers.
Mac’s have no viruses for the same reason that Woody Allen and Paris Hilton have no body gaurds, you’d have nothing to gain by attacking them except possibly the satisfaction breaking their conceit.
