The folks over at NewTeeVee took the “Flip SD,” as they called it – no real clarification if it was the bigger Flip Ultra or smaller Flip Mino camcorder – and did a side-by-side video quality comparison against the new iPod nano. You’ll recall that during the Apple presentation last Wednesday, Jobs and company took a few direct shots at the line of Flip cameras.
So what did NewTeeVee find? In a nutshell…
“Overall — the Flip offered a MUCH better picture both indoor and out, providing way more detail in the image. The Flip microphone was also a little more discerning in our test, able to distinguish our subject’s voice in a crowded room much better than the Nano.”
Again, no word on whether this was the bulkier Flip Ultra or more pocketable Flip Mino. Both of those aren’t nearly as tiny as the iPod nano, though. And the nano does all that other stuff, too, like movies and music and whatnot.
Still, it appears that buying the new nano solely based on its video recording feature might be something you’ll want to put some extra thought into.
Hands-On- iPod Nano vs. Flip SD [NewTeeVee]

I shot the video and yes, I forgot to mention that it was shot with a Flip Ultra. Good catch. Thanks for the link.
Ah, I was waiting for this comparison, awesome job!
Awesome work! This is a great idea to show the difference. It looks flip SD is better than ipod nano.
en! Thanks!

Wow, the difference is pretty clear. Quite embarrassing of Apple to insult the competition when it clearly performs better.
Apple dropped the ball Sep 9th was a flop leave the video to flip. I was looking for the ipod touch to get microphone and speaker.
The video and audio are clearly better on the flip, but don’t forget that the video isn’t the whole story. for the same price you can get video that for some is good enough, plus a great mp3 player. That’s a significant factor. But certainly the flip’s video is waaay better.
Many devices nowadays can record better video and still function as a media player.
I wouldn’t call this video good enough, as its TERRIBLE quality, a lot of detail is missing.
Its night and day difference. I’d rather have the good flip and carry another MP3 player than the awful looking nano. Thanks for the share, I’ll be getting a Zune and a Flip now.
Wow the flip really is night and day better even indoors. I like the wide angle of the nano compared to the flip but the quality is simply horrible.
I do like the design of the Nano so I bought a $12 knockoff on ebay and oddly enough what annoys me is that it uses the ipod usb cable Grrr proprietary so I am getting another $18 knockoff (larger space) that uses a standard mini A cable :-)
Once the music is playing whats on the screen is less important though I do with these knockoffs displayed album art :-)
I am hoping this new zune takes off and finally gets hacked so I can use one WITHOUT the zune software. I hate itunes. I really hate it.
I might as well have KIDS with itunes compared to how much I hate the ZUNE software. What is so hard about a stinking DRIVE LETTER and Mass Storage Drivers. Grrrr
ipod video sucks balls…
If I remember Job’s sales pitch.
Buy the nano and we’ll throw this cool video function in for free… it cops, it dices, it’ll even wash your
Is a matter of time that Apple will catch up on video quality. The technology is matured. All in one plus handy makes a world of difference for me. Imagine having to carry so many gadgets ?!!. Besides, if you really want a good quality video, go get a camcoder.
