Why Cataclysm is the only direction left for World of Warcraft to grow

WOW_cataclysmIn case you missed it, Blizzard made some big announcements the other day. Yep, an MMO is releasing another expansion set. However, this one is going to completely reshape the entire World (of Warcraft), and that’s really the best possible thing that they can do.

World of Warcraft was originally released in 2004, and is currently the most popular MMO in the world. With local servers in Europe and Asia, odds are you’ve either played WoW, know someone who has, or are at least aware that there is a game called WoW available. Since the game was originally published, there’s been two expansions released, The Burning Crusade in 2007, and then Wrath of the Lich King in 2008. Since then, Blizzard has continued to release free content updates featuring new dungeons, and pvp areas, however there hasn’t been a major update in almost a year.

WoW is starting to run into the same problem faced by games like Everquest, and Asheron’s Call. The people who were going to buy the game bought it, leveled up their characters, and are maybe getting a little bored. You can only level a character up so many times before you start to find it repetitive, and while raiding and PVP is fun, finding a group can be difficult, and pvp can be frustrating for some.

So why is Cataclsym the only direction for WoW to go? Because Azeroth has gone stale. Unless they want to end up like the Ultima Online’s and Everquest’s out there, they have to revamp it. So how do they do it? They either release World of Warcraft 2, or they do something like Cataclysm: create a world altering event, that is going to make people want to start over, to create a character just to experience the new content and art. And maybe get some of those people who left for other MMO’s to come back into the fold.

What’s even better is, World of Warcraft evolves. From the most popular user written modifications, to the way the starting areas for a character works, Blizzard is always paying attention to what people really like. 2008’s Wrath of the Lich King featured a very dynamic and scripted starting area for the new death knight character, and people loved that fact that they could quickly pass through the initial ten levels, get some skills and gear, and jump into the more interesting content. Blizzard has stated that the Cataclysm expansion will have that same content with the two new races available to players, the goblins and worgens. Again, listening to the players is one of the best things they can do, because it will make people feel like they are actually making a difference in how the world is evolving and developing.

I’ve been playing World of Warcraft since it was released. Frankly, I’ve grown a bit bored with it, but the new Cataclysm expansion (at least what we’ve seen of it) has rekindled my excitement. I sure I’ll be pre-ordering it and standing out in the cold to pick up my copy at midnight.

  • WoW died in patch 3.2, this is just prolonging the suck that we call casual gamers.

    Vanilla WoW forever! or SWTOR…

    • Every time a patch comes out, there’s someone who’s disgruntled. “Oh, it ruined WoW”..

the forums of full of this stuff. and still, millions of people play.

    • You obviously don’t remember how bad vanilla wow is. And I agree with Dave: people will always complain about the most recent patch. Even if in the 3.3 patch Blizzard decided to mail you a $100 check every time you beat Arthas, people would complain that some people are getting more money than others and it ruined WoW.

    • Actually, casual gamers are just as bored. I’ve been playing for almost 5 years. I’ve run all the classes to 80, raided all the new content, and pretty much done all I can. I was looking forward to a new class, but instead, I get the opportunity to… roll a class that I’ve already leveled… again. Sure, it’s nice to see the old content changed, but much like having a new racial, once you’ve seen it, you’ve seen it. Which is why I’m not excited about goblins and worgen. Yes, it’s cool. But let’s say I roll another worgen warrior or hunter. Hey, steady shot is still steady shot no matter what race I am playing.

Blizzard screwed up with this expansion. Sure, maybe a new class doesn’t solve old problems, but it gives the experienced players (casuals and “serious” players alike) something new to play with. I don’t know what I’ll do in the expansion, as I don’t see myself rolling a class I’ve already played. And I’ve played them all.

  • patch 3.2 killed wow this new expasion pack is going to Destroy world of warcraft :(

    r.i.p :(

    • hey i dont think tht Catacalys is gonna kill WoW….coz things hve bcome easier for the new guys……mount at lvl 20 and 85 silvers for the mount…..its quite reasonable compared to the previous upgrade at lvl 30 for 40gs….and with the xpansion….the whole of azeroth can b explored with the flying mount…..well tht does make things interestting and with a new battleground lyk WG….and 2 new races and the chance of havin a new heroic class in the next expansion or a patch has risen since the lvl cap has been increased to 85……things r gettin interesting….wuts ur say m8??

  • I’m not that sure Cataclysm will be a world revamp… I think there will be great changes in some known zones, but the graphic level and nature of the game will maintain.
In the end, it will be fun to see some of Azeroth zones changed, but it will still be plain old WoW enviroment.

Personally, I would enjoy if Blizzard drew new zones, with an entire new graphic engine. That would be a change!

  • sagarmatha – horde – tortheldrin

    for the horde
    da bast

  • Just once I would like someone to explain or give their own thoughts as to how patch 3.2 killed WOW…

    • Curious… these people who posts patch 3.X killed wow and nothing more are the people who hears the self-proclaimed l33ts whose jock straps they sniff say “Patch 3.X killed wow”… so they feel it’s the cool thing to say as if they are l33ts themselves. Get over yourselves and go play candyland… something that will never change.

      • Haha it is really depressing when people say the patches ruined wow. If your bored of it,STOP PLAYING! Things never last forever, let alone a video game, get over it and move on. Stop complaining girls,Blizzard is doing a great job in my opinion!

  • Why did 3.2 kill WoW?, If you are refering to the changes made in how easy it is to aquire gear I can see where you are coming from but it hasn’t ruined anything, it has just made it harder to tell the men from the boys.

    • I agree with you.

Only about 2% are saying Patch 3.2 killed WoW… the other 98% will continue on playing WoW. I’m sure this next xpac will do the same. So.. killing WoW? hardly.

But I agree, it is harder to tell the mens from the boys. Enter achievement points.

  • actully the reason for the armor stuff is because of ulduar it has been said from what i heard that they had made it more difficult than they intended thats also another reason they are makeing cataclysm its to prepare u for fighting arthas also so stfu and stop complaining like people have said before if you dont like it then dont play it

  • Undead Hunter
    Worgen Rogue
    Goblin Deathknight
    All. The. Way.

Can’t wait from Cata. to come!

It’s not going to kill WoW, more knock it outcold for a little while. It will give some of the new players a little shock. “I thought it was going to look like this? WTF” Says the human pally newb, then I come in and say “Get used to it!” And pwn his ass.
