Matt, to be fair I’m pretty sure the Zune HD has the gaming capabilities of the iPod touch and possibly quite a bit more, it is the actual content that it lacks right now and not for long if the preview video is to be believed.

Matt – the fact you’re writing for CrunchGear and just openly say that the Zune HD does not have gaming capabilities, makes me believe that apparently you didn’t do your research and know a lot about the Zune HD. Or, you’re just a Apple fanboy (since you ended the article that way) who just can’t accept that the Zune HD is superior in hardware to the iPod.
Yes, I will applause Apple for having the best ecosystem for a multimedia device and phone, and providing an App Store with thousands of applications for everyday use. But, Apple still has a lot to learn and fix with their new App Store and so called “Genius” feature, which won’t actually start working until the 3rd or 4th revision.
I’m buying the Zune HD and already have the new iPod (64GB) – let’s see which one I will be keeping and returning.

I really think you’re running into an odd definition of capability you have in your head. To say it doesn’t have the capabilities of the iPod Touch means that it does not have the ability or potential to do what the iPod Touch can do.
The gaming side of this is more of an Xbox versus PS2 situation to me, you have the new contender with a lot of raw power but no library to speak of at the moment versus the weaker hardware with a huge collection of titles.

I think Microsoft needs to learn a lot about product quality and customer care/support from Apple.And DESIGN.iPod touch is superior than Zune HD in design and OS..and it will always be.They have 75000 application and I think it’ll reach to 100000 in 6 months.I think iPod touch is 2-3 year product.So next update will be bigger..may be with 5 MegaPixel camera with HD video,Radio,3G/4G plan option,GPS and front camera also….
I beg to differ. MS has done an extremely fine job with their customer support for the Zune – sent me new headphones no questions asked and made returning my Zune for repair a snap. As for design, that’s certainly a matter of preference and in my opinion the Zune wins, hands down… but then I’m a guy and don’t much care for the effeminate look and feel of the iPod.

this is getting ridiculous, all this fighting over which is better. I think that Microsoft has the better chance of selling simply becaue of economical reasons. the low end Zune HD is only $20 more than the low end iPod Touch, and it has twice the space on it. also, the only thing the iPod Touch has over the Zune HD is a head start. Apple has more apps, so what. Microsoft can make apps just as easily as Apple. i will admit that i’m not too thrilled to hear that the browser on the Zune HD is based on IE, but it’s not like its all that bad. my only concern is that Zunes are not know to take much of a beating without becoming a brick (my first Zune… my fault though, don’t do Parkour with a Zune in your pocket), and iPods are know to take the beating but not work correctly afterwards (fellow traceur who keeps his player in his pocket during a session). Microsoft has a better return policy, and i will be waiting on that policy to run out before the purchase of either the iPod Touch or Zune HD. seein as how i am more familiar with the Zune, i will more than likely be going with the Zune HD. i will admit i have hated Apple since being forced to use Macs in elementary school (the school has since changed to PCs), but i will give the iPods a shot. they look like crap made of crappy plastic, and i have seen all my friends spend more and more money replacing them after they break, but i have never had a problem with any players (except the RCA Opal… crappy P-O-S). so, although my Zune 16GB player has outlasted five different iPods from three different friends (ranging from Nano and Shuffle all the way up the ladder to Touch), it doesn’t mean i wont have better luck. hopefully if i do go with iPod, it will last more than six months.
sorry for the rant, but i really do have nothing better to do while in class. now for my nap, before the professor gets to involved in the lecture to notice that i don’t care.

anyway, the point of this is to discuss Zune, not Mac’s OS or Windows… so i would just like to say that i am thrilled to announce that the mindless fan boys have made up my mind for me. i will be unique, rather than one of the mindless sheep, and get a Zune HD (when my Zune 16 finally dies, which probably wont happen soon). maybe when the sheep learn something about techonlogy, they too will make an informed decision.
consider this, iPod has more apps because… oh yeah, they have more time. the price of the 16GB Zune HD is… only $20 more than the 8GB iPod Touch. as for the sheep comment, buying from iTunes only allows u to use the music on iPods… like sheep trapped in by the fence. Zune Pass songs allow you to choose 10 songs as MP3’s (not some protected format), meaning that if u are unhappy with Zune, u can still take ur music anywhere on another player.

MS is not cheap, they have more people working for them (in terms of people that matter… programers, coders, ect.) and have more third party developers who use their code (compared to the few who use Apple’s code).

1)OLED works well outside, unlike LCD… i mean, have u never taken ur iPod Touch outside? it looks just as washed out as the site says, u have to hold ur hand over it to see. Although, i will say that the iPhone does not have this problem as much… still, we are talking of media players not phones.
and OLED’s are not the cause of power drain, its inefficient chips… thus the Tegra and its awesome efficiency
2)Apple claims the gold standard in chipsets with the iPods chips, because no other advanced player has challenged them yet. now that they have competition, they will be sadly disappointed. i also noticed that they said nothing of the Tegra’s power, only that it came from a company that they once owned… so i guess they were scared to admit defeat. also, how would they know if the Zune’s OS supported multi-core processors? did they get one themselves and take the thing apart? and how would they? did MS send them one with a note that said “Suck on this”… or the Apple iNinjas go steal a prototype or something?
3)the screen size is not “significantly less” than that of the iPod Touch, the difference in resolution is so low the human eye wouldn’t be able to tell. and the HD doesnt stand for High Def… as HD has two meanings. High Def and Hybrid Digital (as the site says). what it should be the Zune High Def Hybrid Digital player… not shorten it to HD and let that stand for both.
4)CONTRADICTION ALERT… the title says high def radio, even though they told us thats not what the HD means. Apple shot themselves in the foot on this one, i dont have to say a thing.
5)of course Apple is attacking their software… they are SCARED. they even call them “first and foremost a software platform vendor” for crying out loud. they know that MS will be putting out app after app and will allow for dev software that will wow u. unlike Apple, Zune will probably let any app through, and allow u to search by rating or name or ect. so, no more rejected apps just because Apple people want to steal them. the musical instument app everyone loves, Apple got it from a rejected app… just changed the name and look and re-released it themselves. so, myth 5 is just more Apple says this suck, so none of our fan boys will buy it.

Not that I’m complaining because I think the OLED screen looks gorgeous, but you forgot to factor in the 480 pixel height, so yeah it’s less than 50 across (48 to be exact) but it’s 480 tall. So it’s actually about a 23000 pixel difference. Just sayin…

I will say, that this argument is ridiculous. Why do apple lovers get so upset that there is another awesome product out there? The only way the ipod touch will be threatened is if there is a better player on the market. And if that’s the case here, then go buy it. I, myself, am a first gen ipod touch owner and I love it. But I may very well be first in line tomorrow at best buy to pick up one of these bad boys. I’m just praying that the zune software 4.0 will have mac support. I think microsoft really has something here.
Oh, and that website was really stupid. OLED is pretty incredible, there’s no denying that, and I have no idea what they’re talking about with tegra because, as far as I can tell, the menu smoothness and awesome interface kind of blows everything away.

I use MS becuase i like it. And i have a zune because i wanted to 80 gb MP3 player that can do more advanced things (when the zune came out Ipod still had that crap screen, it sorta woke them up) I have used both products, and a few others which i had liked. I dont use an ipod because i dont like Itunes, which does things to your music files and data files that reduces your control and organization of them.
But to each his own. I have learned to bash on Ipod stuff before i know what im talking about. maybe you should too kid. Pick one up, test it out. if you dont like it, right an inteligent sounding review. otherwise, stick with myspace blogs for your boisterous ranting.

This site has convinced me to buy a Zune instead of an iPod Touch. The reason the people who were for the Zune used facts to back their reasoning while the Mac fan boys used bad come backs. i dont know who said it but i am pretty sure someone said something about Windows Xp getting hack faster than Mac’s OS. In a test i took a hacker 15 seconds to hack a Mac and about 22 minutes to hack a PC. The only reason why people hack PC’s more or make more viruses for them is that there are more PC’s then Mac’s.
