Rumor: Apple to refresh the iMacs and Macbooks soon

imac.previewNow that the new iPods have been announced, it’s time for the next round of everyone’s favorite game, What’s Apple Got For Us Next? This time research firm Wedge Partners thinks that we will see new iMacs and new Macbooks “in the next several weeks.” O rly?

The iMacs definitely aren’t slouching in the tech department but it’s been a while since an update. If anything, the CPUs might get a slight bump, but it’s likely to see updated GPUs and larger hard drives. Chances are that if the model line was going to get a drastic change, Apple would have made sure that they were available before school started back up.

The same goes for the MacBook. If there was going to be a major revamp, it would have probably been unveiled a few weeks ago. But don’t be surprised if a larger hard drive and a faster CPU makes its way into the classic, white MacBook.

  • As long as it’s not the MacBook Pro. I just bought mine.

Thats why you should always buy within 30-60 days of the latest update or wait for the next upgrade.

  • Your logic doesn’t make any sense. Apple has never really released big new redesigns BEFORE the school year. They are usually in October.

    • Agreed. The way they sell to the back-to-school crowd is to include $100 off a printer and a free iPod Touch. This helps deplete inventories of the old in time for the new. I’ve seen it happen too many times to feel otherwise.

  • It’s been almost exactly two years since the introduction of the Macbook Air. At 12 months, they switched from the Intel GMA 950 to an NVIDIA graphics chipset. Aside from a minor cpu bump and price cut back in June, that’s the last action it’s seen. The Airbook is notable for being the only Apple laptop in the Snow Leopard era to be limited to 2Gb of RAM, and its battery life is now clearly inferior to the new unibody Probooks.

I’d guess the Airbook is in line for a refresh. Things to look for: 4Gb of RAM, longer battery life, or (wild assed guess) Wireless USB (which would address the biggest criticism of the machine, that it lacks ports).

  • Intel will be introducing 1.6 and 1.73 GHz quad core processors which could fit the power limits of the iMac and MacBook Pro. Time frame of September 23 to October 23. I would tend to think Apple will skip these Clarksfield processors and wait for the Arrandale series later this year. These will be faster clocked dual core with multi-threading.

  • Well unless they put blu ray burners in them then I can wait for the next one.

  • “Chances are that if the model line was going to get a drastic change, Apple would have made sure that they were available before school started back up.”

Nope. Apple, like most other resellers, use the back-to-school season to clear out their old inventories. Is it so hard to note that the “free iPod touch with every Macbook for students” offer expired on 9/8/09 and new iPods were released the next day?

Apple sees students as cheap suckers who do not want latest and greatest tech, but just want everything on a bargain.

  • Is a ‘refreash’ the Smoothie version of a refresh?

  • What are the chances of seeing USB3 in this upgrade?

    • Who cares about USB 3? Nothing you can connect will work faster and don’t be quoting me the peak limit the new spec supports. What is the peak limit of a USB connected hard drive, scanner or HD camcorder that could possible use this interface?
