Jeremy “The Animal” Horowitz just posted a list of exciting new rumors about the iPad including the announce date – around January 19, just in time to relegate CES news to the dustbin of history – and that it will be available in May. The device is just awaiting Steve Jobs’ signature on the dotted line.
There will be two devices, a 3G and a non-3G version and the resolution will be 720p or so on 10.7-inch screen. It will also run iPhone OS and have dedicated media systems as well as an ebook reader built in.
Interestingly, I just found another device called the iPad, a point-of-sale card reader from Fujitsu. Although something like this won’t stop Apple from getting what it wants, it may make it a bit harder to retain rights to the iPad trademark, making me thing it will be called something else. Otherwise, this is right in line with everything everyone else is saying – the timing, the size, the usage model – so let’s give just cross our fingers and toes in hopes that, like a Spring flower gently pushing through the murk of a long, dark Winter, the iPad will fill our hearts with joy and promises of rebirth. Also I’d like to play Civilization Revolution on a big screen.

I suppose resolution greater than 720p wouldn’t make sense on a display this small?
I disagree. A higher resolution would be valuable, even on a screen this small for myriad other purposes, browsing the web being one.
iPod Big Daddy (drill sold separately)
On another note, a January announcement would really be a slap in the face to the MacWorld expo, from which Apple dropped out of. Don’t know why Apple would choose this date if not within a bigger conference.
(a) Because Apple is no longer beholden to any conference.
(b) Because the Holiday shopping season is over and this is how they generate renewed product interest in the slow season.
If they’re already working on the device, and there’s still another 3 months left till January, why can’t Apple just release it then. By releasing it May, some people may not be able to wait or would like one right away. If Apple already has a finished product, they should be able to release it right after announcing it. Maybe they want to built up more suspense and rumors. http://ZiggyTek.com/
Maybe it will be finalized in January and then it takes three months or so to get the products built in the quantities that Apple would like for a decent debut? I would imagine making a few hundred thousand units would take some time.

“so let’s give just cross our fingers and toes in hopes that, like a Spring flower gently pushing through the murk of a long, dark Winter, the iPad will fill our hearts with joy and promises of rebirth” ….sounds to me like you need to get a life, bud!
3G? It sounds strange to me..
iPad? Was that name leaked from Apple? It sounds like something you’d find in the feminine hygiene aisle at the supermarket.
Whatever this thing turns out to be, I hope it isn’t tied to AT&T. Just give me an express card slot or a recessed USB connector and let me plug in the HSDPA/LTE modem of my choice.
Any update about Techcrunch’s device similar to iPad ?
Poll: Twitter.com/SpoupS >>> New apple touchscreen device will be called… http://poll.fm/181hc
I’m with you on Civ Revolution – but don’t like the iPad name at all. It sounds like a feminine hygiene product like @topmounter says.
What? the same os as iphone? At least, I hope this iPad will come with Flash support. If not, big fail.
In keeping with the JesusPhone theme, how about the MosesTablet.
Or keeping with the feminine hygiene theme…
The MaciPad: Strong enough for a man, but Ph-balanced for a Mac user.
So far it sounds like a bigger iPhone without the Phone part… Disappointing
I doubt they will call it iPad, the name just isn’t in line with their brand architecture anymore. They’ve pretty much strayed away from all things “i” and the iPod remains only because it has so much equity instilled in it. If it truly is a laptop I expect it to be the Macbook Touch and Macbook Pro Touch. The only exception of calling it a Macbook would be if the hardware was so exceptionally diluted that it did not qualify as a true laptop computer then I can see a new name being developed to neither dilute the macbook name nor the underestimate it with an iPod derivative.
Just curious: what is the pic with this story, and what does it have to do with the iPad?
@fjpoblam,
It’s in the story…
“I just found another device called the iPad, a point-of-sale card reader from Fujitsu.”
Apple would find a way to get the iPad name if it needed it so I don’t see an issue there. I think it will be called something else though more likely iTab or iTablet – iDoubt it will be anything original :-)
iPad, although easy to pronounce across the globe, is a terrible name and it is way too close to iPod too, adding to the confusion (technical support and whatnot). As mentioned above, it sounds like a feminine hygiene product’s name (I do not even want to imagine what kind of juvenile apps would follow the now infamous fart line of apps).
True. As an Australian to pronounce iPod and iPad and let me know if you can tell the difference.
Any idea as to what these will cost?
so what happened to the crunchpad?
3G? It sounds strange to me..
thanks so much
As far as the name- I believe it was Cisco that actually owned a device or system with a registered name of iPhone. Nortel may have also. I think Apple cut deals with them when the first iPhone was rolled out.
Having said that, if the device is real, iPad is most likely not the name. It’s way to close to iPod (and they already got grief over the 3GS or is it 3G S …hmmm….
Iphone operating system? 3G? On the first device of it’s kind….and from Apple?
I don’t think so…..it will be much, much better than that.
Let’s just hope that it will ship with Mac OS X and not with the iPhone OS, otherwise we have to deal with a limited piece of crap and another stupid Apple regulated marketplace – the iTunes App Store for the “iPad” (never, ever going to be the final name though).
Sadly, the more i think about it, if i would be Apple, i would probably make it an iPhone OS device – from a pure revenue prescriptive .
Regardless of that, it will never be more disappointing than this “Wireless Charging” device from Dell: http://gizmodo.com/5369472
“perspective” :)
The delay is probably because they have to get FCC approval since it’s 3G, right? They won’t submit it to the FCC before their announcement…because product information would be leaked and would kill the buzz.
Ironically, I’m relatively sure Apple use said iPads in their Regent St, London store to take card payments on the shop floor. Have vague memories from using once when I bought my Macbook!
like another commenter said in the previous ipad post…ipad? really apple stay way from that trademark. you cannot become someone who uses an ipad without looking like a bitch. remindes me of the cramps saver…or maxipads. pads pada ipad. UGH!!!
That’s the reason why it’s taking too long to release they can’t decide on what name to use!!!
I’m really excited, but I don’t want to have to pay for another phone plan. I wonder if the IPad can tether to an IPhone.
