Have you updated your Wii to version 4.2 yet? Because if you have, and you’re now having problems with your system, Nintendo will fix it for free.

There’s something in the latest Wii system update that has borked many a Wii out there in Radio Land. You’d expect Nintendo to create its updates so as to disable or otherwise interfere with modded Wiis, but this time the trouble extends to 100 percent clean Wiis. Go ahead and check the Nintendo forums if you don’t believe me!

There is a silver lining here, however: Nintendo recognizes that something, somwhere is amiss, and has offered to fixed any broken Wiis provided the Wii was never modded. So, if you modded your system and now it’s broken, well, tough luck. But, if your Wii is clean as a whistle, but is now broken, just give Nintendo a call, and it’ll sort it out.

The lesson is, of course, never to update anything till a few days have passed. The last thing you want is some update to ruin your video game system or production computer.

  • The problem is because the update does something it should have no right doing, it overwrites the BOOTLOADER stored on boot2!

Worse, the installer code is buggy and tends to write incorrect data, as well as has no error checking, even the hacks used error checking.

To quote one homebrew author: “The [boot 2 update] code [from Ninty] is so buggy that we decided to write our own for the HackMii installer.”

The update also has no features whatsoever, all it does is run some very very buggy and broken code to try to wipe out homebrew, it does this even if you have no homebrew, and tends to brick consoles. Worse, all they did was try to detect them by name, an updated 4.2-proof version of all the hacks was released less than 24 hours after the 2.4 update!

This would be like Windows Update reflashing your BIOS just in case you stored a hack in there, and not doing a verify afterwards.

    • Thanks for the details! I’m still quite happy with my 4.1 updated (I got Wii Sports Resort) Wii but I’m now both annoyed and paranoid about their own ability to keep their platform stable. It’s bad enough that I trusted Nintendo to know what they’re doing but that they don’t even communicate it openly with their customers so that we know WHY or what the circumstances are is an unforgivably aloof snub. Worse, still, it’s to stop a small set of Wii owners from tinkering with writing their own software. Gee–that was worth it.

On that topic… why put a stop to that anyway? If I buy a car, are you going to tell me I can’t change my own oil or make my own modifications to it? I suppose car-makers would:

  • I don’t think anyone should worry about Nintendo’s stability, as I remember correctly this is only one of a very small amount of problems the Wii has had since launch. I mean let’s not compare it to a 360. Besides, it was done in an attempt to stop piracy and that’s good for everyone who actually owns one.

    • I don’t understand what you’re trying to say. Can you explain what you meant by “I don’t think anyone should worry about Nintendo’s stability?” What stability are you talking about? Their platform’s ability not to get corrupted or damaged by the update? We can clearly see that that’s not the case–the latest update IS causing problems.

Also, I don’t understand what you meant by, “Besides, it was done in an attempt to stop piracy and that’s good for everyone who actually owns one.” I own one–and I don’t understand how it was good for me. Especially if it turns out it’ll brick my Wii because the update corrupted. Can you explain?

    • None? No elaboration? Maybe, just here to market that site like a spammer? :P
