Sony Blows It, episode 57: In which the PSP Go is garbage

A year from now, or maybe two, when Sony has actually figured out what it’s doing with its online store, managed copies, and other details, the PSP Go might just be a good buy. Of course, they will have to lower the price by a hundred dollars, and I don’t think 16GB is going to cut it for long, and they’ll want to upgrade the wireless hardware too. But once those things are done… oh, who am I kidding? They’ll come out with the Go Plus and charge $300 for it.

We’ve been skeptical of the PSP Go since before it was announced, and now that skepticism has flowered into a righteous contempt. Everyone’s trashing the system, from its micro-sized controls to its slow wireless. Its saving graces (nice screen, more portable, great new save feature) are afterthoughts when compared with Sony’s thoughtlessness when it comes to actually getting and playing games on the thing. Not to mention the $50 premium, which won’t exactly entice new gamers.

While the PS3 Slim was a pleasant surprise in Sony’s increasingly baffling strategy in the gaming sector, the PSP Go is a dog. It’d be in the dustbin already if it weren’t Sony’s probable intention to make it the only handheld they make and move their PSP system entirely online. An interesting idea, but the PSP Go is a mighty poor start.

  • Have you tried it yet? I’m skeptical too, but I like the idea and am trying to reserve judgment until I try the thing.

Definitely won’t be picking one up though, that’s for sure.

  • you need to back the fup man.
Sony doesnt need to please you, so back up

    • of course sony needs to pls him. he’s the consumer you f’ing blind fanboy. manufacturers produce products to make money, and they make money by selling to consumers. if they don’t please consumers, who will buy their products and how will they make money? finish high school first before you open your mouth u mental cripple.

  • Sounds like a rant more than news. WTH does episode 57 refer to? Secondly should they have priced it less than a DS or DSi? Is that the only way they could have satisfied the technocrati?

    • Read around. Sony has pissed off the retailers with it and the consumers with it. The retailers because once they sell the console, there is nothing more for them to sell you. They don’t get a cut of the games. The consumers because the only way you can get games is by the PS Store. No more buying used games or price shopping. Sony has you by the balls and will charge you $29.00 for Chains of Olympus when you can get it anywhere for $15. Already have a bunch of games on UMD? Useless. They took away their trade in program.

I don’t understand how they can shrink the screen, take away the UMD, give 2 year old wifi and kill any competition for the games and charge you so much for it.

  • lmao at lostman. There not pissing of customers you can buy what you want funny thing talking about god of war chains saying there charging 29.99 for it and you can buy it for 15 yea guess what you can buy it for 15 15.99 from yea you guessed it the playstation store. Idiot

    • whoa did you pass high school english? i can barely understand a word you’re saying. your response is replete with grammar errors. sony is an idiot for overpricing everything, and you’re an idiot for not finishing high school you mental cripple.

  • what’s the problem here ?!! if you dont like sony and its consoles ,look for something else !! it’s so easy , if you can find another portable console in the market well that’s fine , why everybody is hating on sony ?!! sony is with no doubt ,the most inovative company in the world ,just look around and see what sony created and made possible in this world ,and it’s not a coincidence if sony is a japanese company , Nas said : you hate what you cant conquer…
Big up to Sony ,ur doing great job !

mvg213, you are a blind fanboy. Get off Sony’s TIT.

Sony can’t conquer in console or handheld.

mvg213 said “Big up to Sony ,ur doing great job” — at what exactly, handing Nintendo and Microsoft the industry on a silver platter…

To quote Android you are a mental cripple; BIG ups to Sony for holding down LAST PLACE

All stats for sales quoted can be found at wikipdia, IGN, gamespot, google, etc etc

  • Uh, my UMD’s won’t work? Have a shoe box full. Kids love them, and picking up a used PSP is no problem.

This unit is a no start, unless you could txt or make a call. Seriously, Sony is a great company, but like any huge multi-national company, it has divisions that baffle.

This unit will not sell and let’s all be honest, we will vote for it with our wallets. Mine is staying put.

  • “They’ll come out with the Go Plus and charge $300 for it.”

You got that one right Devin; beat me to it in-fact. Sony makes me hate Sony.

  • what company doesnt come out with new products drone lol ms nintendo apple come on be real everyone comes out with something new keep hating it wont hurt sony just you.

  • I sell PSP games from Japan, anime and dating sims and what not, and if this were to have taken off (it clearly won’t) it would have made me switch to the DS much more. A shame since in theory I’d like to own one.

  • Sony still has to learn to lose its ego. This thing is definitely overpriced and outdated off the bat.

Not allowing a transfer from umd to Go! is pretty stupid too. It makes sense in a legal, “well they’ll just give their friends all their games and we won’t make any more money off the games they already had, waahhh” sense. However, at the end of the day in the consumers eyes, it just looks like something that you will have to keep feeding money. That’s why it won’t work.

  • Everyone should do as they like. I will get a PSP Go for Christmas. As I always wanted to get a PSP, but just figured that is was too big for my daily life, and with PSP Go I can deal without UMD.
I understand that there is little incentive to upgrade if you have old PSP already, but that is fine I guess. Maybe expectiation where higher, but I think we can take PSP Go for what it is, a more portable variant in PSP family, and it will make sense to some people like me. :-)

  • I can see why people are mad with the price of the PSP Go. Old wifi, smaller screen, uncompatible with older acessories and no UMD conversion program can equal to a valid arguement that it is just over-priced. But given in consideration that this new device has 16gb (14gb really) of solid state memory, Bluetooth in which you can use your ps3 controller without being attached to a cable and the ability to tether with cell phones on full data plans to use as a hotpoint anywhere you go is a good addition. Plus the fact that its lighter and smaller making it easier to carry in my pocket made my decision a bit better to act on. The PSP Go is not for everyone, specially those who already own one. At least until you can vouchers for all the UMDs you already own.
