Who wants a new HP Envy 13? Anyone? I mean, after all, it is one of the hottest notebooks ever and comes preloaded with Windows 7. But no one probably wants this brand spanking new, never-been-opened, $1700 notebook for free. But if you do….click through for the simple giveaway entry instructions.
Contest rules:
- Every day, from now until October 14, we will hide a secret code in one of that day’s CrunchGear posts. It will be a CAPITALIZED WORD at the end of the story.
- Collect these words from now until October 14. There will be exactly 7 and we will post them over the weekend as well as during the week.
- Put them all into one email (use a real email address!) before midnight on October 14 and send it to contest at crunchgear dot com with the subject line “SEVEN WORDS TO ENVY”
- One winner will be chosen randomly from all the entrants who have all seven words. Winner will be notified 10/15/2009
- The giveaway is open to US residents only, 18 or older!
That said, here is your first word:
PACKARD
Good luck and happy hunting.

So does that mean that there will not be an additional word today (10/8/09) since you already gave Packard as the word? Or is this one a bonus?
this is today’s word.
If you have a word everyday from today until the 15th, that is 8 words, not 7, or am I not understanding something.
sorry. typo in the date. fixed
Please learn to follow instructions… “It will be a CAPITALIZED WORD at the end of the story.”
it says “at the end of the story” but thats pacakrd isnt the word at the end? Hunting is.
The frontpage image makes me wonder why HP (or others) can’t go to say Schott, and get their screens coated so it isn’t so tremendously glossy. I’m not talking matte, there are anti-reflective coatings that work wonders with glass.
The link from Techcrunch is going to the pic and not this post
fixed
Another question: Will the words be in every twitter article you submit, or will they also be in articles that aren’t submitted via twitter?
I visit crunchgear through twitter mostly, so this would be nice to know!
Put as many as you find in an email? Why bother if you don’t have all 7?
good point
So, basically you want us to inflate your page views while looking for a single word in an article each day so we can enter a contest for a free laptop?
Sounds like a great return on investment to your advertisers!
Yeah. That’s the idea. We still haven’t gotten our non-profit, religious organization status so thems the breaks.
man would you go on double dare and refuse to do a physical challenge, saying “oh so basically it’s just to make it entertaining so you can raise your ratings?” come on!
have fun with a little scavenger hunt, read some posts you wouldn’t normally read, and enjoy the site.
Any word on a driver update for that trackpad? I know it’s been pretty universally hated by reviewers.
Then again, if you win a free laptop, you can probably afford to buy a nice wireless mouse to go with it..
I’ve got a couple, maybe I’ll do a contest and if you’re lucky you’ll win that one too!
Will all of the posts be on crunchgear or will some be on techcrunch or other crunch blogs?
on CrunchGear only. I’ll add that in.
Clicked through to the post from my feed reader. The contest title had me thinking the winner would be whoever came up with the best 7 words describing why they should get it. I already had my entry prepared: “I want to install Linux on it.”
Hey, this is a far better contest, prizeless though it be.
“Windows 7 must be better than Vista.”
So from those that have all seven words, you’ll randomly select the winner? Lemme know if I understand right. Thx.
yes
Will license anyone our bot who will do this automatically for $1. Plus send from all of your email addresses or create 100 new yahoo addresses on the fly for an extra $1.
Takers? Trying to make more $ than TCs ad dollars (@John, will discuss rev share deal too).
Oh, wait, everyone on TC already has their own bot to do this themselves?
These pictures show that Apple shamelessly copies HP’s design:-)
uh, no, apple was the first to come up with the portable computer idea with the screen with black bezel on one side, and the keyboard and centered trackpad on the other side, and centered company logo on the outside.
you fail.
i hope you’re joking fan boi.
or is it a case of
missing sarcasm fail?
Aw, US only :( But, cool idea for a give-away :D Hopefully people will read some of the articles they check in too!
Do we really send an email to contest@crunchear.com or is that a typo?
Isn’t that Mike Tyson’s website?
:):) +100
That’s what I was thinking too???
Just curious but why are contest always open to people 18 and over when many many companies offer contest for anyone 13 and up unless the prize is something that is illegal for minors.
Whats the difference between those and contest run by yall; exactly why are your contest always 18 and up.
Laptops can contain porns and that’s illegal!
Honestly, though I don’t know.
People don’t want to market “tech” products to people who can’t buy… aka teeny-boppers.
At 18, you can drink, smoke, serve, and buy gadgets so you get to participate in the fun.
In what states can you drink @ 18? My daughter’s just 18, and Washington state the drinking age is 21. In Ontario, Canada, it was 19.
So will there only be one word per day?? I don’t want to find a word, and still have to look through all of the other posts for that same day.
one word per day.
hey guys, great promo idea. no doubt i will be reading crunchgear articles on the daily from now on.
holler.
send it here?
contest@crunchear.com
midnight what time, world is round and US does cover a few time zones – quite a few if you consider our colonies – Hawaii &c.
I like lots of tech nerds am GMT+8.
This is so freaking awesome. I know I won’t win, I probably wont even find all the words, but hell if that’ll stop me from trying!
Damn I could really use a new laptop. I’m still rocking my screenless and keyboardless Dell Inspiron 9700… ugh. lol
This is fantastic…thank you!!!!
So what if people found all the words and created 100s of email ids (yahoo, gmail etc.) and then posted from those or use automation/bots ? Do you care about that or not ?
Very good point, sounds like this could be easily spammed at the last stage. Whoever got the most email has the most chance to win.
That is a great question…
They’ll probably checked the email account date of creation. or they’ll do some other sort of research or method. or maybe IP tracking.
I’m 90% it would be a total waste of time. You would have A chance but if you do this, then you have NO chance. For reasons stated above and more. Welcome to 2009/2010 people.
“The giveaway is open to US residents only”
gotta love the World Wide Web.
Grrr
This website is on the world wide web, this competition is not. Is that really so hard to understand? All because something is ON the world wide web, doesn’t mean its world wide. Welcome to the internet, btw! Enjoy your stay, maybe you’ll learn something. Eventually. Probably not judging by your comment.
In short: Legality issues are a bitch, get over it.
woah. calm down. dick.
you’ve take blog comments a little too seriously. dick.
Read more carefully .. his name was “Joshua”…
9% of traffic to TC and CG originates from Indian ( Alexa, siteinfo )
“The giveaway is open to US residents only”
!!!!!
Is there any xplanation?
Pretty sure you just answered your own question. However, there are probably legal reasons why its US only. Did you even think of that? Probably not. Not too many people think before they say something.
Sign me up! I’d like to win a free notebook. :)
ME TOO! :)
Don’t need a mirror, thank you.
Still waiting for that d*mn crunchpad to materialize..
Yeah, there’s a contest where you have to save a dollar a day until it’s announced, and then you save the dollars in and see if they send you one. Depends on whether you started early enough, really …
feeling bad as it is open to US residents only… :(
Maybe this will be my first laptop…
I would LOVE a new laptop for my mommy!
I guess you are not shipping up north to canada ?
if you want I can pass by, noooooo problems
I’d say, get a friend or family member in the US. Boom. Problem solved. :p
seriously, how did HP get away with ripping off the macbook pro? Designer got lazy or maybe forgot about a design meeting deadline and just panicked?
It’s not a complete blatant rip-off, it does look quite similar though. Last I checked, high similarity is not grounds for blatant rip-offing and thus suing or anything like that.
Besides, we’re talking about laptops here, not cars. There is only so much you can do with laptops.
In the end, who fucking cares? Seriously? What are you, a fanboy? Competition has always been a good thing for consumers. Maybe if we get more macbook look-a-likes, we’ll start getting even better prices? Its a win win so stop complaining you fool.
“US residents only”? I am regular reader from France and I feel it is not fair.
You guys should give more respect to your Canadian, European and world wide visitors. Hey you get money from the all of us!
Another bad point for you.
I see a lot of sites that say US only. I think there’s some law that prevents give-aways globally in certain cases.
I bet that’s basically it in a nutshell. There is always a reason for everything, yet people always assume that they’re just being fucked over for the fun of it.
I bet this has something to do with the release, it may not be a global release.
“Nice laptop! what is it and where can I get one? oh, so they aren’t being sold here?” – see there’s one reason why its probably US only, it may be a US only release for right now.
Just think, what other reasons could there be? People need to stop being stupid and just think.
Here is a smart thing to do, contact one of your US friends and strike a deal with him. You’ll find the words and if he wins, you’ll arrange some sort of compensation.
I don’t agree. Sure there must be a reason but if you want to give a laptop or any other item then you should make sure any visitor has the same chance to grab it without having to make a deal first with a US resident.
Now many visitors feel unhappy and that’s not positive for this Website brand.
Whether you agree or not is irrelevant? Welcome to the real world.
http://www.howstuffworks.com/question541.htm
LOL…you couldn’t give me an HP..those are the worst computers available today.
Funny how just about everyone else doesn’t feel that way, isn’t it? You’ve obviously had issues with HP in the past and it’s blinded you.
HP used to suck, just like every other company. They’re actually pretty nice these days, especially ever since they absorbed Voodoo.
Your personal experience =/= instantaneous facts. In other words, you’re a Troll. Such a pointless and sad existence, but whatever makes you happy I guess.
SO SAD only US =[
10/8 – PACKARD
10/9 -AUTOMOBILES
10/10- RENDERED
10/11- Fords
What article was “Fords” in? I read every article yesterday and didn’t see anything.
Isn’t the word for 10/11 is FAGS.
your not helping yourself win, :p
Is the word on 10/12 a single word or a phrase?
the day before oct 14 or oct 14 at night right before oct 15? and what time zone? also its a new word each day? or are all 7 out there already?
With all the making of additional e-mail addresses I lost it. Can we enter more than once with the SAME e-mail address?
Been through the stuff from the 12th twice, and didn’t see a new word…
Nevermind… Found it… :)
Is it one word or a phrase ? I found a phrase (two words – ### @@@@@@@@). Was wondering if I was off ?
Word is reply.. Pick me!
Us residents only huh *tsk.
Well, I have them all, but every time I try and mail a message to contest@crunchgear.com I get a delivery failure notification!
What’s up with that!
Update: It bounced back from my gmail account as well as my bellsouth account…
Was this a sick and sadistic joke?
Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550-5.1.1 The email account that you tried to reach does not exist.
What is up with that…..
Must have overloaded their mail server. Didn’t expect such a high response volume did you?
No, I didn’t. I’m not sure this isn’t them filtering messages coming from google’s servers.
My att address bounce back referenced google as well.
Well, I cannot wait for a resolution message any longer – Almost midnight my time and I have to be up early!
I guess I will just have to challenge the results in the AM.
I am in the US and have all 7 words and have several properly formatted, time stamped emails, with several delivery failure notification messages to go with them…
Brian – I bet they’ll include you’re name in the drawing and should your name actually come up they will ask you to forward along one of those delivery failure notifications…in the mean time…maybe you should submit the 7 words to their tips email addy…just in case.
ugh … you’re = your
got all my colleagues to send emails, I hope this was not in vain.
Maybe I should post the 7 words here to show I got it right and enroll properly…
What do you think?
I already tried. They deleted my posts, twice.
I am getting the same Remote host said: 550 #5.1.0 Address rejected contest@crunchear.com from yahoo. I do have all seven words.
