Requiescat in pace: Nikon D3, we hardly knew ye

383304Another bit of Nikon news today, the Nikon D3 has been unofficially discontinued. You might be able to find them used, or in old stock, but for the most part they are gone, making more room for the D3x.

Honestly, it makes sense. Why buy a D3 when you can buy a D3x? The updated electronics make it a far better camera, if you can get past the crazy high price. Nikon might have made a little misstep there, charging $8000 for a camera that should have been priced at $5,500.

So farewell Nikon D3. So far this is only a rumor, but the majority of the retailers out there are out of stock, and have been for quite some time.

  • They’re actually making room for the release of the Nikon D3s which will add HD video and a few other features.

  • Sorry Dave you have no idea. Yes the camera is being discontinued, but not due to the D3x, that is a diff camera – high MP for those who need it whereas the 12MP D3 was in a “perfect” space for press and photo-journalist work. Nikon have long promoted “high-qual” vs. “high-speed” variants – as does Canon. So, the D3x is not “a far better camera” – it’s actually inferior to the D3 on a number of points, but not MP’s. Your opinions masquerading as expertise don’t help at all.
