The new Windows 7 commercials: Now we’re tawkin’

Windows 7 is your idea, friends. That’s what this new spot – along with some 7 second demos after the jump – is trying to say. It’s basically pointing out that Windows 7 is a nice, clean update. Yes, I would agree it’s a Vista Service Pack and, in a way, it’s kind of like Snow Leopard in that it changes little in the UI but improves quite a bit under the hood. But Windows 7 is Microsoft’s big product for 2010 so let’s let them have their day in the sun.

The marketing message here is quite clear: Windows 7 is all about you. After having a decade of updates thrust upon us, this new version is for you and you alone. Your laptop won’t suck, your PC won’t slow down, and you’ll get more work done, and that beautiful, handsome people want to help you make your life better.

  • Changes little on the UI?
Only a completely new taskbar and the way running applications work.

    • Yup, he’s coming off a bit unhinged. Biggss and Siegler will have to work overtime trying to conflate Snow Puss with what IMHO is probably the best Windows release ever.

Can’t get objectivity get in the way of being a Macboi.

    • haha, no kidding. Also Aero enhancements up the wazoo.

    • Hmm, I was thinking the same thing. John is usually of the more objective writers at CG/TC, but “Vista Service Pack”? Don’t let your partiality get in the way of your journalism.

It is Vista SP3, just rebranded and renamed in order to get away from the sinkhole of a brand name that Vista was.

        • No it’s not.

        • If what you’re saying is true, than the world was just duped with the greatest marketing campaign ever, and I like MS even more for pulling it off. Amazon highest grossing pre-order in history and rave reviews everywhere.

Be that as it may, it’s a great product and the general public (the ones that don’t even know what a service pack is) are the ones who will buy it . Call it a service pack all day, it doesn’t take away from the fact that people love Win7 and it’s going to be even harder for Apple, and Linux to grab more of the market. If Vista was SOOOOOO bad and Mac only gained a few percentages in share over the last few years, what’s going to happen with Win7 being as good as it is?

    • What a stupid review. Why is an apple fanboy blogging this BS about Windows.

Biggs is an A$$H0l .. can you say that in 7 seconds?

  • I can truly appreciate that Microsoft has gotten their groove back with Windows 7. I’m still a Mac user and don’t really have any plans to switch back, but at least now I don’t feel Microsoft forgot how to build an operating system.

  • Somehow I just don’t believe it. :)

  • These are actually well done. Short and simple. It’s great to see competition for Apple. We all win.

  • Hey, the second video got repeated twice!

  • In this video I see people from the infamously lame commercials from “Songsmiths” and “Launch Party”.

  • Never seen a more one-track minded, biased site than tech crunch.. The entire world including people like walt mossberg who are normally quite harsh on MS are saying Win7 is a winner, but TC has to inject it’s negative comments whether those are deserved or not..

    • what’s the deal with the need for the post prior to this one…

    • no body beats the wiz - October 22nd, 2009 at 2:52 pm GMT+5

LMAO Walt also said Vista was the best OS Microsoft had released…. 2 years later and he’s calling that worse compared to 7 lmao.

      • y r u even here? ure just fooling urself if u think u r sounding cool by writing these stupid anti-windows comments. LMAO should be more like MFIUA (my foot in ur a$$). no logic – just rhetorics.
it is sad that people like u even exist – i pity for your parents and friends who have to cope up with an incompetent and soul-wrenching personality like u on a a daily basis.

  • Before they mention Windows 7 I couldn’t help thinking they were all describing OS X features. Could easily insert OS X Snow Leopard at the end. Will be waiting for the youtube OS X edited version soon :-)

    • I thought they were talking about SL too but then realized that they had not mentioned that it was now more of a “user data deletin’ good time!”.

  • Such Hype today on windows 7. It already has been hacked and pirated in China and being sold packaged for 3 dollars it is in todays news. I cant believe how quickly it was hacked.

    • You know release Windows 7 builds have been available 1-2 months ago right?

    • no body beats the wiz - October 22nd, 2009 at 2:54 pm GMT+5

lmao. Vista was so bad they were giving the pirated packaged versions away for free.

I can’t believe you’re surprised it was hacked that quickly. This is Windows we’re talking about here.

      • “I can’t believe you’re surprised it was hacked that quickly. This is Windows we’re talking about here”

It doesn’t take much to write a CD and provide a key… how does it matter whether its windows or not?

  • since when does 1 billion = 7?

  • very funny commercials. Too bad the hard ware won’t stand up to what Windows thinks 7 will be.

    • Little Red Ryan Hood - October 22nd, 2009 at 3:22 pm GMT+5

I’ve installed it on some pretty old hardware and it holds up nicely, in some cases it runs faster than XP did on the same hardware.

  • While all the hype is great I have had no end of problems with windows 7 at work. To be honest none of my customers want to use it because they had so much trouble back-grading to XP when Vista failed them they simply will not go out on a limb and get burned again. To be perfectly honest I think this says it all http://tinyurl.com/yzdbl4k

  • John Biggs is your typical apple biased editor.
“Windows 7 is great but though you might wanna spend your money on a mac because it just works”

John Biggs is one of the many dumb article writers that have made a dumb article talking about the launch of Windows 7 but yet somehow squeeze in Apple fanboyism. CrunchGear is a step below appleinsider

  • Man, TechCrunch’s mac hard on is getting bigger by the day. This last month or two is the only time where I’ve actually considered removing the subscription.

  • “it’s kind of like Snow Leopard in that it changes little in the UI”

Aero Peek, Aero Snap, Aero Themes, Jump Lists, new Taskbar, new Windows Explorer (inc. Libraries) and Windows Flip.

Yep, little in the UI has changed. Have you actually used Windows 7?

  • Frustrated TC Reader - October 22nd, 2009 at 12:10 pm GMT+5

Not trying to be nasty but this is a very poor article indeed.

No useful information (actually no information whatsoever), a bit of pointless sarcasm and even a bit of charity towards Microsoft.

I haven’t been a huge fan of Windows so far but this doesn’t justify a pointless, anti-Window 7 article.

If anything, it’s a waste of time for us and a bit tabloid-like; if you don’t have anything to say about it (good or bad, but founded), don’t write about it.

  • These new commercials are probably the best for Microsoft in a long time.

And yes, Techcrunch/crunchgear is actually just ‘applecrunch’. It’s sad, but horribly obvious. Gizmodo is pretty bad these days too.

  • Did the Indian girl in that first video say “absof*ckinlutely”???

    • My son heard absofreakinglutely but my husband and I heard absofukinglutely!

It’s definitely the Indian(?) Microsoft girl about 18 second into the 30 second video!

  • who is the Ad Agency for MS lately? They have been doing a good job.

  • Dude,

I am running Windows 7 on a HP Mini 311 with a dual core Atom and 1 GB of ram.

I am pushing full 1080p on the machine to a HDTV with the HDMI connection and th esystem ram never peaked over 600MB and 320MB when idle. Vista could never do this no matter what updates you do to it.

You Mac zealots need to stop with this service pack junk, it only comes of as jealousy.

  • I think that Windows 7 should be a free or low cost upgrade from the disaster that was Windows Vista. Paying full price for an operating system that should have been done right the first time isn’t cool.

  • Always funny to watch a fanboy try to discredit 7 as a service pack of vista.

  • I have been using FreeBSD for about a year now with the KDE X-Windows interface, Open Office, Firefox and Thunderbird. It has never crashed or hung up and it does everything I need from a computer. It boots in about 12 seconds and about 6 seconds to bring up the X-Windows. There is an application for anything I need. Windows 7 is “Much Ado About Nothing”.

    • How long did it take you to set it up with all your hardware working? Do you have to take a day off work to attempt to get something new to work? I know I had a million headaches for the 4 years I used Fedora Core exclusively. Truth is, for people that are not tech savvy, Linux/Unix is downright impossible to use. On a consumer level, it makes no sense.

  • Thanks for the resourceful review!

I got my first look at Windows 7 this week and my initial reaction was “so far, so good.”

“So far” being the key phrase of that statement.

New operating systems are almost always an improvement, and will almost always generate some sort of enthusiasm or buzz within the first couple months.

But until the user sits down and gets a feel for what a new OS is all about (outside the VirtualBox), you’re not going to understand the product’s deficiencies … or its notable improvements.

The reality being you need at least 4-6 months under your belt before you can conclude how successful an OS is for you. And that’s the bottom line, how successful is this system to you and your work environment?
Here are my Top 7 reasons Windows 7 could be a success, and Top 7 reasons it could be a failure:

    • no body beats the wiz - October 22nd, 2009 at 2:58 pm GMT+5

      Epic Failure.

      Top reason #1: The Registry
      Top reason #2: Business’s don’t want/ don’t need to upgrade.
Top reason #3: 7 is slower than Vista and XP.

      • You’re fucked in the head!

        1. The Registry has never been an epic failure for 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista and the plethora of server releases.
        2. Business will want to upgrade once they find out 7 will run on older systems Vista couldn’t.
        3. How stupid can you be? 7 crushes Vista and XP in terms of speed.

Go back to beating your meat.

      • #1 why we should not listen to you
        You have not used 7.
        Now move along

      • @wiz – are you Biggs who is posting bullshit about Win7 using this “wiz” account? coz u both sound equally stupid and unaware of many things about win7

  • “I want less?”

Well, at least M$ will be able to deliver.

    -Don

  • I think these are exactly the ads MSFT should be pushing they tell the general user what they want to hear…

  • Biggs,
Please use ur mac and learn how to write a blog post.. please! Techcrunch should fire you(and take your mac back :) )

  • If you came here looking for random, useless blogging you came to the right place. If you came here for real reporting, find a real reporter. It’s getting hard because they’re all getting laid off due to internet sites ripping off their content. I will try to find a real source of news from the mainstream media while they are still in business. I know he’s probably being told to be provacative by his bosses, but seriously, if the Biggs/Techcrunch crowd are the future of news and tech reporting, we’re all screwed. IS THERE A JOURNALIST IN THE HOUSE?

  • omg… these are like the worst ads in the history of mankind… they are almost exact replicas of mac ads!!!! cant frkin bill gates come up with just a little little detail that is NOT COPIED FROM MAC???!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! omg… mocrosoft is like a mac-copy… only worse

    • I am sick of these bullshit Mac droids who believe the world starts and ends with Apple. They make good stuff sure but hey so can Microsoft.

Win 7 is about to take over the world. Live with it.

Great work Microsoft – we had to for it – but it was worthwhile. Heck using a PC is fun again.

  • Because they aren’t meant to be taken seriously, can’t believe the commercials play on the fact that MS really doesn’t give a sh*t about you. If they did, they wouldn’t have sold Vista. Because MS needed to meet its revenue targets, they hyped the launch, letting their Marketing guys overpromise, and pissing off allot of people. Given the choice I stayed with XP.

Sure Win 7 may be a cleaned up version of Vista but cmon, MS will ream you for as much $$ as they can and won’t admit they made a mistake like Apple with Snow Leopard.

The difference between Apple and MS? Apple doesn’t expect to make crap so when they do, they make up for it by not charging for it.

MS believes they can get away with making s*it like Vista so they make the decision to charge $$ for Win7. And this arrogance will be the downfall of MS.
