Look at these early Windows start-up sounds. They look primitive now but imagine being a young man in the late 1980s and your parents have just brought you home a new Packard Bell x86 machine. Back in those days sound cards were premium items and to hear an operating system sing to you when you start it up was a really big deal. The vast majority of computer users during that time would have never heard most of these sounds.
The Windows 7 version isn’t nearly as impressive, as evidence below, but I think we’ve replace sexy sounds with sexy videos in this visual age.

Startup and shutdown sounds is the first thing I disable whenever I install any OS.
Wow your BIOS is reaaaaaaallyyyy long to initialize !
wow, I can’t believe I just sat here and watched someone’s computer boot up. My life is worthless.
qft
What about Windows Millennium Edition (ME)?
Nobody’s ever been able to get ME to boot up without crashing, much less get a video of it!
That’s a minute 21 I want back.
I feel like a really OLD GEEK after viewing this.
I don’t think I every heard the shutdown sound for Windows NT. My session always ended with the Blue Screen of Death!
okay, I admit it, I miss that Windows 95 startup music … bring it back!
Is it just me or does the windows startup 2000 sound like the CBS evening news jingle?
That just made me remember that I used to change it so that every time a fatal error would crash the system it would give me the TA DAH!!!
I would get such a kick out of that. My windows doesn’t crash any more though. :(
Not only did I spend 2 minutes watching this..but I got a kick out of the fact he has his Apple Ipod booting up next to his new windows 7…Where is your Zune my friend?
