T230H

How keen are you on touchscreens? Keen enough to navigate Windows 7 while using such a monitor? Acer has a new one, the T230H, which will allow you to do exactly that. A big selling point is that it’ll increase your productivity, but I’m not so sure.

I mean, is it easier to use a touchscreen to navigate Excel, or flip about Firefox? You’ll still have a keyboard, I should think, so it’s not like the iPhone where you’re forced to get used to this radical, new interface; you have no other choice. Here, you’re split between touching the screen and typing away on a traditional keyboard.

But I’m still not the biggest fan of touchscreens yet, so my bias is palpable.

Anyhow, the specs:

• 16:9, 23-inch, 1920×1080 LCD.

• HDMI interface

• 2ms response time, which should placate the twitch gaming crowd

• 80,000:1 contrast ratio

And so on. Again, there’s got to be a market for these things, but I’m not so sure I’m a part of it.

  • I think it would be cool to make a RTS that would take advantage of touchscreens. Like starcraft…. but if they did that to starcraft2 then we would we waiting another year.

  • Who wants to touch the screen? I always tell people once “please don’t touch the screen” and then I say “stop touching my screen!”

What I’m saying is, this seems like the wrong interaction model for touch computing.

  • Shame it’s not better than HD, though.

  • The only negative about these is the price. I bet it will cost $500+ which not many people can afford..
I bought myself a 9 inch made in china touch screen with 2meters of VGA cable for $100 (more affordable price). The fun thing about that is its small enough to take to bed with me so i can enjoy the full 2×3GHz speed and the full flash 10 support of my computer even in bed or on the sofa. Can’t really do that with this one though.

  • Overall, I highly recommend this product to potential purchasers.
Pros: 1) At the time of purchase (October 31, 2009), the Acer T230H is the largest multi-touch display available.
    2) It brings out the multi-touch capabilities of any Windows 7 laptop/desktop.
    3) It can be moved from computer to computer as needed. We have tested it on both laptops and desktops running Windows 7 and it performs flawlessly.
