New “Avatar” trailer continues to not impress

I had high hopes for Avatar. I’ve seen James Cameron talking about it twice, and interviewed one of the motion capture artists, Reuben Langdon. But what I’m seeing in this trailer is a jumble of cliches and unconvincing, at least on the small screen, CG effects. Why they picked electric blue cat-people instead of some truly alien species is a mystery to me; with a less humanoid critter, suspension of disbelief is much easier. But our brains are tuned to detect the problems with these almost-human special effects, and the whole thing is going to look fake as a result.

And really now. “You’re not in Kansas”? Really?

    • Thank you for saying it so I don’t have to. I swear, everyone with a voice on the internet makes it their job to crap all over every single upcoming movie. Trust me, pretending to be some sort of critic who “knows better” doesn’t add to your intelligence.

      • So if I said it looked good, would you have called me out for being a fanboy? I think my tentative criticisms are perfectly valid.

        • There are some people that you just literally can’t please. And they call you the hater? Right… lol

        • I think you are lucky to not have expectations because you’re in a treat for December when you watch it. …man it really sucks to sound like a homo fanboy. but the 16 minutes preview was amazing.

        • I don’t see why you are not impresses by it ??? The trailer looks good. And i guess they choose a human like species because they are suppose to have human like emotions and it’s easlier to do it that way! I mean you don’t really aspect a predator with good emotions and intentions do you ??

      • Likewise, this comment does nothing to add to your intelligence.

But apparently you think you know best compared to anyone else and only your opinion matters and so thus, nobody else can have an opinion.

Last I checked, he isn’t even stating himself as a “critic”. He’s just giving his opinion. Why? Well it got you to click the link and comment didn’t it? Congrats, you just gave them revenue. That’s pretty much the sole point of this “article”.

In short, you’re a hypocrite and you’re full of yourself.

  • How can you be un-impressed with a film you have yet to see?
Sounds like you have made your mind up already and its not even in the cinemas yet.

    • How can you be impressed with a film you have yet to see? Sounds like you have your mind made up already.

It’s called a trailer. It gives me a preview of the movie? Ever heard of it? What do you think the point of a trailer is anyways?

This isn’t rocket science. You can tell a lot from a trailer.

      • 16 minutes IMAX Preview was very impressive

        • That’s an opinion. It may be true, but that’s not really the point here. I was just making the point that people have brains and they can use them and all because you disagree, doesn’t mean you’re right.

I will have to check out that IMAX one you’re talking about though. People keep saying that it’s better than the other trailers I guess. But which trailer is more accurate? The ones I’ve seen so far don’t seem that great for all the hype they’re getting. It doesn’t look horrible at least.

  • In his defense, it does look pretty bad. Trailers are supposed to tease the best parts of the movie, and it still looks like something SyFy would make.

    • Have you seen anything on SyFy lately? I’d much rather watch something like this than the crap they put on SyFy. Sure the CG is bad, but SyFy bad? I’ve seen stuff in black in white with better looking stuff than SyFy, this at least looks modern, albeit cartoony.

      • Nothing is SyFy bad. Well, maybe that biblical apocalypse one. lol

But anyways, that’s a horrible comparison. Just about anything is better than SyFy so by that logic, everything should be good? Not true.

  • I’ve seen the 16 minutes preview and it was honestly really amazing footage in 3D. I really hate to sound like a gay fanboy but it really was amazing.

I’m pretty certain (95%) that its going to probably go over 1 billion dollar mark. Hell, Il even pay you 50$ if you decide NOT to watch it.

  • I’m sure you would have done a much better job at creating this movie than James Cameron. His track record sucks anyways.

  • I thought exactly that when I first saw the trailer. I have no idea what people are getting excited about? It looks like a pretty sub-par movie to me. The CG looks pretty unconvincing as well.

  • We’re using to seeing people in low res, we’re not used to seeing giant blue cat people. So of course it is going to look funny on your computer in a 3 minute clip. When you see this in IMAX and 3d, it will blow your mind.

  • I am going to the 8 foot Imax theater on 68th steet in NY and experience this in 3D.

Mech adn dragons at war, screw you Devin, I know a hit when I see it.

  • It’s like Smurfs in 3D.
All looks like JarJar binks in blue.
    The dialogs are cheesy:
    - “This is great”
    - “You should see your faces”
    - “How outsanding”
    - “You’re not in Kansas anymore”
    - “Keep your mind in white. Won’t be difficult for you”

    Cmon…

And the blue smurfs acts like a 8-year child… for the sake of God, see the expressions of a GOOD actor and compare that with the 8-year old expression of the “you shouldn’t be here. Go back” scene…

Cameron should never used CG’d actors… it’s ok for scenes of impossible takes… but NEVER for actors. Period.

  • I saw the 15min teaser with 3D glasses and I have to admit that I wasn’t really impressed. It really did feel like a very, very top quality Blizzard animatic. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I work in 3D CG and I was damn impressed, but it still struck me as being very CG-ish.

Then again, I have a couple of mates working on the movie over at Weta and they have said the final product will literally make your bowels explode with awesomeness.

  • It seems like the official posters on this site do nothing but crap all over every movie that comes a long

You’re like a bunch of spoiled fanboys.

  • On the plus side, it has the robot guy from Grandma’s Boy in it, so awesome.

  • My wife saw a trailer for this movie on TV and said it “looks like something you might want to see.” While I won’t say it looks like crap (especially with only one trailer to go off of), I will say that it looks far from mind-blowing story-wise.

However, when I saw the trailers for Transformers, I pretty much thought the same thing and was at the very least, pretty entertained by that movie.
When it comes right down to it, as long as I’m entertained by what’s going on and the story isn’t gawd-awful, I’ll walk away with a good impression and not feel like I’ve just wasted $10.

On a side note, why the hell did they choose the name Avatar? Don’t they know that there’s a live-action version of the Avatar TV show coming out pretty soon? When my wife told me about the new Avatar sci-fi movie, I thought she was talking about the live-action cartoon!
