This is just wrong. I’ll admit, I didn’t enjoy “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”. I thought the plot was weak and contrived, and I was slightly offended by the dumbing down of the film (robot urination and racial stereotypes? give me a break). I realize that the original “Transformers” wasn’t exactly the height of cinematic art, but it was better then the sequel.
So why by all that’s holy, is “Transformers 2″ the best selling DVD/Blu-ray (in first week sales) of 2009? I think the issue is that this year has been somewhat dry as far as good movies go. “Transformers 2″ does appeal to a wider audience, and that’s why Paramount has sold 7.5 million copies in the first week that it’s been available. “Transformers 2″ did fall short of the 8.3 million discs sold in the first week by the original Transformers film.

I bought it because it’s transformers and I grew up with them and even if it turned out as bad as robo cop 3 I would have still bought it. I liked it when I saw it in the theater. Sure it wasn’t The Matrix but I found it entertaining. When you’re making a family movie there are compromises (the twins) so I was ok with it. When I watched the bluray I again really enjoyed it. I felt like I was 6 again. The sound was awesome and the action non stop. Does it need to have a story as solid as Julius Ceasar? NO! Look at the old cartoon and and you’ll see the crap stories we enjoyed. We got what we wanted. Big robot smacking each other around. Perfection.
I’ve had some moments of shame when I’ve seen shows that I enjoyed as a kid, as an adult. Case in point: “The Greatest American Hero”.
Critics often bash something that they cannot understand. Well understand this, there are a ton of Transformers fans all over the world and these movies are great. If the movies are that bad why have they grossed over 1.5 billon at the box office. While I will admit that Transfomers Revenge of the Fallen was a little long it was still a great movie that I saw four times. I cannot wait for Transformers 3 and I hope that Michael Bay will be on board.
I think your expectations were too high towards the movie. What kind of “strong plot” have you expected. The “matrix-strong”? Or perhaps “the-lord-of-the-rings-strong”?
It’s transformers, man! It does not need to be life-changing, it has to be beautiful, fast and intense! Just like it is.
For what it’s worth, it is probably the most fabulous action movie of this year so far.
I bought it since I never made it to a theater this summer to see anything… I did not expect it to be so bad; if they left out the “funny” transformers it would have been much better; they were worse than the droids in the Star Wars prequels.
I totally suport Dave: I love the first movie but the second one doesn’t have “soul”. Looks like a project they just throwed a lot of money in to make it visually impressive but lack what made the first one a really good movie.
Regarding the DVD/BR sales I understand why people are buying it since this movie is “robo porno” and you don’t need to much story when you buy porno.
Just push fast foward between the Robot fighting scenes and the movie is Great! (Yes, I will buy the BR)…
If want an amazingly animated action movie with little plot to think about, then Transformers is it. If you’re a fan like me, you cry every time they begin to transform and you hear that old school sound that I can’t even begin to spell….but you know what it is.
Why did we buy it?
Megan Fox….bent over….on a motorcycle.
Done.
You could’ve just done a Google image search and saved yourself $20
ahhh yes.. but you couldn’t pause it in 1080p then. Good point Jason
For all the nay-sayers: did you actually watch the cartoon? Perhaps you need to go back and watch again. I think Bay captures all the cliche’d campy stereotypes of the original cartoon. the explosions are just bigger and the animation a lot more precise. Seriously people I’m tired of people expecting a film based on an 80’s cartoon to be an Academy winner. Of course it’s going to have a shoddy plot, why are you going to see it in the first place? Explosions, and nostalgia; sorry things just aren’t the way you remembered them.
Yeah, the movie sucks, but it’s a show piece. Got a new HDTV and Blu-ray player, or just an impressive home theater setup? You’re not gonna put in your old VHS of Casablanca to show it off, you’re gonna put in something with digital graphics and explosions.
That being said, there’s no such thing as bad publicity, so stop writing about it :)
I kinda feel the same way also. They could have delved more into the mythology but I still had tons of fun and even picked up the blu-ray and watched it a few times already. The movie’s story really felt rushed and I kinda feel as if it were due to the writer’s strike. Like, the story was actually there and had so much history but it was only tapped into. Hopefully they bring more character development into this and give us those awe moments like when Transformers arrive to earth in the first one. I would loooove to see Primus and Unicron in this and duke it out in space. One can only hope
