Dear Valve, where is Episode 3?

er
Sometimes less is more. In the case of a fan comic recently posted to Valve’s forums, it definitely raises a valid question. Where on earth is Half-Life: Episode 3?

When Half-Life 2 was released in 2004, it was met with critical praise and great sales. Since then, two episodes have been released, the aptly titled Half-Life: Episode One in 2006 and Half-Life: Episode 2 in 2007. Both titles were extremely well made, though a bit short in nature, to the dismay of the fans.

Since then, we’ve heard very little. Valve has worked steadily on other projects (like Team Fortress 2 and Portal) but many have wondered what has become of Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance. Valve has stated previously that they intend on releasing Half-Life: Episode 3 sometime, but no one has heard anything about it since.

So the real question is, will Valve ever release Episode 3? Have they pulled a Bungie and moved on to other titles? Or are they just playing it really close to their proverbial vests, and planning to spring the title on us with no warning, as they’ve done before? Only time will tell, but I certainly hope we’re not looking at another Duke Nukem Forever. And the fans are starting to get restless.

  • Yeah, its not really episodic at this point is it? I believe that it comes out sometime in 2010…

  • never played the second episode, but loved HL2 and episode 1. Yeah its time for the damn game to come out already.

  • kiss emmak 3a emmou 3a 3eml valve wil release date! anyone who wants that translated contact me.

  • i think that valve makes a (maybe unplanned) cut in the episodic series and will move on straighaway to half life 3. i mean half life “3″ and episode “3″ would make a good connection and it also would explain the big time gap between the titles. i also think it’s kinda too late to release a third episode on half life 2 standards nowadays. so i guess the next title will continue the history of alyx and gordon but be released as hl 3. however, im 100% sure the new title is in the making and its gonna be huge.

  • j – They aren’t gonna release hl3 now, lol. It took them 6 years to make hl2. Now, granted, its been almost 6 years from when hl2 was released, but it also only took them 2 years to make the original hl. With all the new graphical and technical improvements since hl2 was released, I figure it will be closer to 2012 when we’ll be seeing hl3. Its gonna take longer to make than hl2.

But you are right about the connections. Valve’s gotta be working hard on hl3 now, and I expect to see some hints of it at the 2010 E3. That’s gonna eat up a bunch of time and resources.

The main reason for the episode 3 delay: It’s the last of the episodes. They have to make it good, after all, the last thing you see it what you remember most. So, as Valve always does, they’re gonna take a long ass time to make sure they make an extremely good game.

  • kmm_ you said I expect to see some hints of it at the 2010 E3.
but i think that the E3 is in mai , so i dont think that thegame date release will be at the end of 2010 , althought , i found in a frensh site that the game will be vailable before cristmas 2009 so , may be in december ,and this info is by one who is friend of bag neweel , he visited valve studios on april 2008 ,and he found the game in progress , and he talked about the new look of alyx’s face
i hope it will be like that so i can buy the game and enjoy it before 2010 ,and i think it’s like that
because he said the game will be there just after left for dead 2 release , it’s top secret and even in the E3 2009 no info about this game and that explain the importance of this title no officiel trailer , no word about the new engine specially for this episode , it will be the bigest surprise
