While there’s no hard numbers, an analyst over at Capital Markets has called the sales of DJ Hero “modest.” Usually you want phrases like “brisk pace” and “exceeding expectations” when you release big ticket games like DJ Hero, but it doesn’t seem to be happening here.
You already know why: the game is too expensive. It’s asking a lot of consumers to spend at least $120 on a video game ($200 for the special edition), the genre of which may be played out, when the economy still hasn’t picked up for the average person yet.
Or maybe the DJ culture isn’t as attractive as the whole rock and roll culture?
It should be noted that the game isn’t necessarily bad, with our own Greg Kumparak saying it “doesn’t suck horribly.” High praise from the big man.
I also don’t recall seeing a big marketing campaign behind the game. Maybe people just don’t know enough about it?
Whatever the reason, the game isn’t quite a huge hit.

One of my friends picked it up, I’m excited to try it this weekend. But you’re right that it’s just too expensive. I don’t plan on buying much more Guitar Hero stuff any more either simply because I have too many plastic instruments as it is and the new games just don’t have interesting music any more.
Its definitely not terrible. Not fun for any of the reasons that the rest of the Hero series is fun (its a hideously lackluster party game, for example), but it’s still entertaining.
I’d say its a rental, but you can’t really rent this damn game.
Yeah, that’s kind of what it feels like. It’s worth playing for a weekend. But to do that you’d have to buy it since renting it is problematic.
I guess you could just hang out in Best Buy for a few hours and play through it.
the last hero game I bought and will ever buy is Guitar Hero Metallica. I own GH2 on PS2 GH3, GHWT, GH:A and GH:M but thats it im done and bored with the series. Although I still play Metallica I love METALLICA LONG LIVE HETFIELD!
I think it was evident at all the demos for this game that there’s a steeper learning curve here than for Guitar Hero or Rock band. Being a DJ is cool, but when it’s too difficult it’s a turn-off. Sucks for DJ Hero .
This was a bad idea, now it will be proven. The public and corporations never did understand the dj culture and this game is more proof.
