yankees

Well that didn’t exactly pan out, now did it? Sony’s MLB 09 The Show predicted last week that the Philadelphia Phillies would win the World Series in seven games. As y’all know by now, the New York Yankees (booooo!) beat the Phillies in Game Six last night to win their 27th championship. Congratulations, Yankees, you’re the Real Madrid of baseball with a terrible stadium.

So hooray, [bandwagon] Yankees fans! Your group of men was better at hitting a ball with a stick than the other group of men.

  • Down with the evil empire!

  • Thanks, Nicholas! I can’t wait for the parade tomorrow. I can’t believe it’s really been nine years since the Yankees won the World Series. Let the haters whine all they want. The Yankees are champs again!

  • I live in PA… I’m kind of glad the yankees won. Now I don’t have to hear the phillies “fans” cheering and shouting all day like last year. Mind you these “fans” had never talked about the phillies or baseball ever before the series…

  • Rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for The Emperor in Star Wars. Or Standard Oil.

  • u mad?

Haters keep on hating. You’re nothing but a dime a dozen.

  • So go read Engadget – they’re probably Yankees fans. There is nothing exciting about a team that has spent hundreds of millions of dollars acquiring superstars winning a championship. They’re expected to win. It’s boring. Baseball needs a salary cap so smaller market teams like Pittsburgh have just a shot as the Yankee$. And this comes from a Phillies — I’d love to see Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, etc experience the civic pride we felt last year when the Phillies won.

    • Principal owner of the Pirates, Robert Nutting, is worth more than $5 billion. George Steinbrenner, before handing the reigns to his sons, was worth around $1.2 billion.

It’s not that the small market teams can’t compete because they can’t afford the best players. They can’t compete, because they don’t have the fan base that supports those salaries, such as the Yankees or Red Sox.

It’s a business decision. These owners are businessmen first and fans second. The owners of small market teams have a better bottom line fielding a mediocre team than they do with a team of high priced all stars. Even during the Yankees dire seasons during the 80’s and early 90’s, they drew huge crowds and sold merchandise.

What Reuben said below is exactly right. The Yankees management made some smart, though risky, business moves and it has paid off in spades.

  • While it’s true the Yankees spend more than any other team in baseball, it’s because they can. Good management and business practices have allowed for it. How many teams purchase a cable station to support their team. Baseball is a business. In addition, based on New York taxes and such, all players need to recieve millions more from a New York team to come versus a smaller market team.

Don’t get me wrong I love the route Tampa Bay has taken, they’ve been rebuilding for nearly a decade, being very careful with their budget and eventually have been able to create a great team. Very few teams would be willing to go through the challenge they went through. It’s also why the A’s used to be one of the most respected teams in sports, and why the Marlins have only made the playoffs twice and and won the WS both times.

Very few teams are willing to make the sacrifices needed and thats why they have fallen over the years (ie: the Brewers could have trade Ben Sheets a few years back for a couple of players but chose to hold onto a single pitcher, and that will not win a WS).

I’m a die-hard Mets fan, so can’t say I’m happy the Yanks won, but have to say I hate the Phillies more.

  • yankees fans who claim they aren’t on the bandwagon, how can you claim that? And how can you back that up? You don’t even know, because you haven’t been around long enough during a time when the yankees weren’t a top team. You can’t even KNOW if you are a bandwagon fan or not..

P.S. You are ALL bandwagon fans.. especially if you don’t even live in New York.

Go Dbacks!! 2001 was a good year wasn’t yankee fans?

    • Huh? So no Yankees fans were around in 1990 when they finished in last place with a 74/88 record?

Are you assuming the readers of Crunchgear are all under 20 years of age?

      • And a mere 8 years later they became the winningest team in baseball. But oh no, they didn’t work hard to get there, they bought their championships… sure, whatever. 27, count ‘em and then count ‘em again.

  • Money does not buy championships. It does, however, allow you to be competitive. If your team isn’t getting the players they need to compete, then you should pressure the owner to either go get them or sell the team to somebody who will.
