Back in the olden days, long before the advent of electric light, our forefathers dreamt of a better place. They dreamt of running hot and cold water in their wash rooms, wireless telegraphy, and the rise of the horseless carriage. They dreamt of threshing machines that could tie down an acre of millet an hour and helioplanes that could transport humans from one place to another in comfort and style. But what was the dream that drove our forefathers to strive for better things, always? What dream sustained them through a Depression and two World Wars? What was the silent prayer they mumbled nightly to the heavens from their pinched and chapped lips? Friends, they dreamt of a website that lets you mix your own trail mix and cereal. And that dream is now a reality.
Mojamix is an online granola manufacturing system. You select your base, then add dried fruit, seeds, and nuts. They package up your foodstuff and send it to your home via first class mail. The average 12-ounce bag costs about $12 and there is the possibility of adding chocolate-covered cashews to the mix. This last part is what clinched it for me.
The company sent me two handmade concoctions GORP and cereal. It was packed on November 3 and arrived on November 7. The GORP was quite tasty with plenty of fruit yet, sadly, a small smattering of chocolate covered cashews. The cereal was also good with a good flake-to-fruit ratio, ensuring I wasn’t just eating flakes although, to be honest, I’d have preferred to have seen a fewer flakes.
The company offers some Popular Mixes including the “Happy Camper” and “Runner’s Fuel,” and each of these mixes can be improved through the addition of chocolate covered cashews. You can also add flax seeds, but nothing good will come of that.
Let it be known: 12 ounces of cereal is not enough for a family of four, especially since there aren’t enough chocolate covered cashews in there to go around. I’d recommend getting two bags at a time, a pricey proposition.
Is Mojamix for you? I don’t even know what to tell you. If you’re too busy to head down to the health food store and really like goji berries, godspeed. The dried fruit was fresh and the granola was quite tasty so quality wise you’re going to get a better experience then you would back at the local food co-op where the granola is picked over by children and besmirched with hippie cooties.
That said, Mojamix has decided to be nice to you and offer a contest and a coupon code. First, enter “crunchgear” in the coupon code for 10% off of your order. Second, Mojamix has agreed to give away bags of goodness to 10 random commenters. What’s in your Mojamix (besides chocolate covered cashews)? We’ll close the commenting on Weds and send emails to the winners.

This looks like a great site. Very interested in giving it a go.
I loved making my own cereal on Cereals.com years and years ago… If I recall, mine was a mixture of everything loaded with sugar plus every type of mini-marshmallow. I called it “Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs” :-)
Can’t wait to try this out. I hope they have nut-allergy folks in mind…
This is actually pretty cool.
My cereal will/would be:
Corn Flakes
Strawberries
Coconut Chips
Pumpkin Seeds
Chocolate Chips
Your selections = 100% metal. Iz got to try that…wowweee
seriously… what *isn’t* made better with the addition of chocolate covered cashews? Yum!
mmm that sounds great!
Thanks for this link, sounds like a delicious way to feed my cereal addiction :)
What a fantastic idea! I will be sharing this one.
Very expensive at $16 a pound. You can get high quality organic cereal in bulk food places at around $6 to $8 a pound. Of course, if I do not have access to quality bulk food places, this is a good option. Now, if I’m at a place that I can’t find quality bulk food places, I probably cannot afford to spend $1 for one ounce of cereal.
If $16 a pound is too expensive, you should try http://www.meandgoji.com. Their average price per cereal is about the same, but you get more than double the quantity per container (30oz instead of 12oz).
sounds like a neat concept. best of luck to them.
Similar service at http://customchoicecereal.com.
It would be great if it cost a bit less.
Yum!
I can’t wait!
General Mills’ attempt at this during the bubble crashed and burned. Is the market bigger now than it was then?
strawberrys hazelnuts and fuyu persimmons of course!
It sounds cheaper when you call it $1 per ounce versus $16 per pound.
Congrats Norberto and Thomas!
All of us at Haas are proud of you!
This a Haas business – UC Berkeley business school. You guys should know about Cafe Fanny, Berkeley Bowl, Monterrey Market. If not, it’s time to take a break and check out your neighborhood.
How “NOT” Berkeley can you be for selling $16 a pound cereal? Food is not that outrageous expensive in Berkeley.
Jeda21’s Mojamix:
Moja Millet Puffs
Adjust Base
Goji Berries
Cherries
Goldenberries
Pineapple
Papaya
Flax seeds
Hemp Seeds
Raw Cacao Nibs
Total $13.69
If not for the price I’d be all over this!
I’d go with Multigrain flakes + Kamut flakes (I don’t know what it is but sounds good) + cranberries + nectarines + Flax + Coconut flakes + Walnuts.
300 calories per half cup – sounds like desert!
I went nuts adding nuts and ended up with a 12-oz bill of $131.49. Hmm.
And how is this better than buying the ingredients yourself, mixing it up in a bowl, then bagging it? What a waste of resources to package and ship it. Come on! How lazy can one get?
I’m pretty damn lazy…
In Berkeley, I get bulk ingredients from Berkeley Bowl and Monterrey Market. Mix them myself for about $4.00 a pound with fresh dates, almond, exotic nuts and all organic stuff. You can get Alice Water’s Cafe Fanny Granola Organic Granola for about $6 a pound. $10 for packaging and shipping is too much, and this is not a green business. A greener business is to ship an iPhone/Android app for $0.99 with recipes of different mixes from bulk food.
Here is the link to order Cafe Fanny Organic Granola.

LOL I couldn’t be bothered to buy ingredients and mix them myself. That’s the whole point of this service: everything is being done for you – the way you want it.
http://www.mymuesli.com from Germany has been up with the same idea since 2007. They became right away the German presse’s darling…
English site: uk.mymuesli.com
Finally a site that has been cloned from a german original. ;)
http://meinmuesli.de
I want a custom curry service.
Seriously, does anyone smell a dot-bomb?
Yeah, that’s way pricey.I thought the Bear Naked stuff was expensive at $6-$7 for a 12oz bag. And considering that I tend to eat a pretty big bowl of cereal, that’s an expensive habit. And the whole “mass custom” angle on it is pretty silly when you consider you can just go down to the bulk section in most supermarkets and cook up something just as good with a little effort. And for being aimed at the crunchy-nutty-yoga-types, this has a pretty big carbon footprint, unless you order 20lbs at a time.
Call me when I can get a hot-and-cold running cereal spigot in my washroom. Until then, I’ll just buy my cereal the old fashioned way.
Always read the whole post before ordering! I didn’t use my coupon :(.
I would recommend http://www.meandgoji.com over this. Better selection and better prices. Also, the cylinders they come in are kind of neat.
My dad would be all over this if not for the price. There seems to be a little conflict of interest with your targeted customer, thriftyness and the love of granola often go hand in hand.
A service like this has been really popular in Germany for at least 2 years. they are called http://www.mymuesli.de and have attracted some serious investment
For Breakfast:
Millet Rice Flakes
Strawberries
Banana Chips
Poppy Seeds
For Dinner
Quinoa Puffs
Figs
Hemp Seeds
Pumpkin Seeds
For Dessert
Banana Split Trail Mix
Fuyu Persimmons
Macadamia Nuts
Yummy!!!
Coconut Chips
This seems a tasty start-up… let see how they will do. Good luck!!!
Very cool!
It reminds me a lot of YouBar, which I used to make custom granola-like bars (which was more affordable). If the pricing was a little better, I’d be all over this!
Well now, if I was feeling decadent and was actually going to go for this (I’m not convinced yet) then I would have to go all out.
Nifty Little Mix:
French-Vanilla Alond Granola
Cranberries
Mango
Peaches
Hazelnuts
Almonds
Coconut Chips
Pine Nuts
Macadamia Nuts
Pumpkin Seeds
Chocolate Coffee Beans
I know. Intense mix of flavors. It’d be like a party in my mouth in the morning.
People work hard on real businesses and crap like this gets coverage and probably funding. What a world.
Step 1. Go to your local supermarket, in the “Bulk Section”
Step 2. Assemble your cereal
Step 3. Feel good that you are a true hippy and reducing your carbon footprint by not forcing some trustfund startup to Fedex you granola
Postal systems are extremely efficient — almost always more so than driving oneself. Transit routes happen regardless of whether your goods are in the chain or not. That’s a concept seemingly lost on most people. Also, as more things are bought online, the supply chain gets more efficient (less things traveling to in-between retailers).
In other words, your actions are not really greener, unless you’re walking. If you live close to a shop that sells all of the high quality ingredients you want then consider yourself fortunate. Most people aren’t fortunate. They don’t have close access to good variety, let alone access within a reasonable driving distance. On the plus side, you’d be contributing to your local economy though. So that’s helpful.
Of course, to actually be greener, one would want to buy organic and earth/people-friendly products when possible, wherever they get it, online or offline.
Was about to name check mymuesli and someone got there first. MM also serves UK market and, having sampled their goods, do a good job of it.
something like this was on dragons den.
Wasn’t there something similar to this on that Shark Tank show? I think it may have been build your own bars though.
It’s a little pricey, but the coupon and contest should help to generate interest and hopefully generate repeat customers.
my ideal breakfast cereal would be
Corn flakes
French Vanilla Granola
cranberries
cashews
Raw Cacao nibs
Ideal Granola
French Vanilla Granola
Cashews
Pistachios
Genius or chaos?:
MojaOs
Strawberries
Blueberries
Macadamia Nuts
Chocolate Chips
Raw Cacao Nibs

This name is destructive.
Cereal as a Service. CaaS.
I remember the days of PFaaS – Pet Food as a Service.
mmmmhhh I am hungry!
At least give the inventor of this Concept some Credit! http://www.mymuesli.com They’ve been around for 2 Years now!
Sounds yummy hope I win to try them out.
I think its a great Idea, there are a few others out there doing the same thing with other products. I remember ordering custom protein where you could select what vitamins and other things to be added to your protein mix.
Great concept!
I love granola made with good ingrediants so the idea of being able to come up with my own mix is appealing but at $12.00 for 12oz a little expensive for my budget.
I like it. interesting concept, even crunchy people can now get good home delivery
This is awesome!
Aw, I visited the site before finishing the article and had so much fun creating my mix that I ordered and didn’t see the coupon :( Oh well, still can’t wait to taste my ginger granola/apple/walnut concoction.
I list myself as a random commenter. Thanks. This is one of the best reviews I ever read on TechCrunch. What a flavor! When you have to email me, I am paramendra at gmail. That easy. Looking forward to getting my pack.
Editors,
at least credit the inventors of the food mass customization idea. Mymuesli.com did it almost three years ago and they got massive press for it. So you should know better.
btw: Good luck copycat…
The idea of mass customization applied to food is not new (more a decade old), and there were some companies trying it out during the Dot.com age – but it is still cool and valuable for everyone who wants to have a product that fits exactly his needs.
What is new is the way that you can personalize the whole experience – not just the food inside – also the front label and package with what is important to you. For example, a quote to a loved one, a funny joke to make you laugh in the morning, or a verse of the bible for the religious folks. Everyone is a different individual and they can express that individuality in their own tweets, or when they customize the song lists on itunes, or now with their own unique bag of customized food service.
What is also new is the social aspect related with your mix: that you can tell your friends easily using Twitter, and let them customize your mix further by using the unique url for that effect.
