mw2reviews-1

You know what day it is! Herein lies my usual review round-up (see yesterday’s preview), starring Modern Warfare 2. Right now I’ll highlight the good in the game, and later today I’ll highlight the bad. Very exciting, yes.

From 1UP (gave the game an “A”:

Mixing real-world locations with bombastic set-pieces MW2 continues the guided, thrill-ride experiences of its predecessor, and adds even more depth to its multiplayer offerings. It might not have fixed all the problems from the first game, but there’s just so much quality content packed into this game that it will almost certainly be one of the most-played games in your library for a long time to come.

From IGN (gave the game a “9.5,” but I wanted to see a “9.7”):

When you look at the total package, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is hands-down one of the best first-person shooters out there, and a truly amazing offering across any system. For those planning to check out everything Modern Warefare 2 has to offer – online competition, full co-op Spec Ops mode, as well as the campaign – you’re looking at a no-brainer purchase. For the strictly single player crowd, however, Modern Warfare 2 is surprisingly short, and doesn’t live up to the standard set by previous Call of Duty games. The campaign can be completed in as little as four and a half hours, and the missions make better scenarios and moment-to-moment adrenaline rushes than they do a cohesive, well-told story. If you’re going solo, you’ve officially been warned. Look at the complete Modern Warfare 2 experience though, and there’s no denying its rightful place at the top.

From Kotaku (no review number, thank God):

Modern Warfare 2 may not innovate or raise the bar as impressively as Call of Duty 4 did in order to grant it automatic game of the year consideration. The better praise it may deserve is that it’s likely the game that many will be playing well into next year.

From Joystiq (no review number, thank God)

Though we can’t comment on the plastic night vision goggles or the other bonuses you’ll get in the Hardened and Prestige editions, the actual disc containing the game is well worth every cent you’ll shell out for it. The single-player campaign might not engross you enough to want to play through the entire game again, but multiplayer and Spec Ops will both bring you back many, many times.

I’ll add more as I find ‘em throughout the day.

Additionally, later today I’ll do a round-up of negative things about the game—it seems the single-player is a bit short, which is a problem for me since I’m primarily a single-player guy—as well as some other Modern Warfare 2-related ideas I’ve got in my head.

Oh, I’m pretty sure none of us have the game yet, so it’ll be a while before you see one of us say “I think the game is such and such.”

  • Only 9v9 multiplayer competitions on the PC (on a non dedicated server nonetheless)? No manual cheater enforcement? No choice in who hosts? Complete FailWhale for me.

I suppose my feelings would be different if I were a console gamer, but I’m not.

  • I’m disappointed to hear that the single-player campaign is so short as it was the primary reason for me considering the purchase. It’s gone from a must-by-after-work-today to a wait-and-see, I guess.

  • Who cares about the PC. Console gaming is where it’s at. Sorry, but a controller beats a damn mouse/keyboard.

    • Not really, why d you think they wont bridge the two together on the same servers? because the speed of a mouse can be tweaked on the fly with modern gaming mice. And I can slow it down too when im sniping or speed it up when im run and gunning (although i typically play tactical only servers, a thing of the past with this game). a mouse and keyboard will run circles around a gamepad any day. hands down.

    • I don’t think there is much of an argument that a thumbstick on a controller is a better pointing device than a mouse. And being that a FPS is centered around pointing your weapon at targets….I’ll never seriously play an FPS on a console.

    • Ask yourself this question: if a mouse is inferior to a thumbstick, why is it FPS games on consoles all have aim assistance?

Console ports to the computer thankfully allow you to shut it off.

Without auto aim, someone using a controller would get waxed by an equally skilled opponent using a mouse. There is no comparison in an FPS.

    • I am sorry to say that you’re misinformed but the majority thinks a mouse and keyboard are better then a joystick. And I think you should really consider this pic.

  • To all gamers alike, console/PC. There are pros and cons to either way you decide to play but instead of focusing on that I would like to hear any negative or positive feedback on the game please. If you do though could you just state if play on pc or console. From what I have gathered so far there are more problems with the pc version of the as opposed to console.

  • Games sucks. Too many features removed. And who cares about a review a few hours after the game is released. That’s like giving a car review after driving it two miles.

Multiplayer will be a ghost town in three months.

  • Funny but the picture you show above is wrong.

The red and green lights on the wings of the Longbows are reversed.

Hmm, attention to detail slipped slightly. Ok very minor but still….

  • Loving MW2 so far. What other games are you playing? – http://bit.ly/1oe9bV

  • As far pointand shoot accuracy and on the fly customization, yes the mouse and keyboard is king. But this game leans on run and gun a lot more than your typical pc shooter, and I’m sorry but k&m is just too unwieldy and awkward feeling for running, jumping, taking cover etc…now if I can only figure out how to stream porn onto my 360…

    • Heheh. I find it completely the opposite. I love using a controller for a 3rd person racing game or an action/adventure game, but for FPS titles I find them awkward, whereas I have perfected my K&M setup to where it feels like an extension of myself.

I think headshot, and I magically get a headshot.

      Well…unless I miss. ;P

  • Picked it up last night almost have it finshed…I find it intense!!!

  • I’m bored already. The campaign is definitely too short, but also wtf is up with the storyline? It’s like Uwe Boll wrote it…I get that they’re trying to make it more exciting, but it’s so stupid…the mw storyline was somewhat realistic, the mw2 story is some crazy arcade madness and nothing like a CoD game.

Spec Ops is a cool idea, and I like the variety…but what’s up with just chucking in a whole load of cod4 levels? That’s cheating…and I paid them for it…

And multiplayer?…again it’s cool in some ways, but I annihilate the opposition even easier in this than cod4…sitting in the sky overlooking the enemy spawn is just kind of ridiculous, streaks are too easy…I really feel sorry for all the casual gamers out there because they’re gonna get killed A LOT…

It feels a lot like a professional cod4 mod, there’s just not enough new content to call it a whole new game. Basically I’m feeling like I’ve been ripped off, although I fully intend to go play the game in a minute. In a few months I doubt I’ll be playing it.

  • As a hardcore PC gamer with COD4 still my staple MP game for two years, I completely avoided the PC version due to the obvious reasons. However to keep an open mind about FPS console gaming, I went out and bought the PS3 version on a whim at 9pm last night, even finally buying a router to share my modem between PC and my 1.5 year old PS3. What I can say is that the SP is so-so, shoot here, run here, hide there, shoot…wash, rinse, repeat. I’m still at the point where I’m defending the restaurants from the Russians, and I think I would finish the game tonight. I’m now thinking of trading in the game at BestBuy for a $40 credit, and I’m disappointed I caved in to curiousity and essentially spent $20 on a bad interactive movie. I’ll save my $40 credit for Battlefield BC2 next year. My clanmate who volunteered to try out the PC game for the clan told us to steer clear away from the PC version, though he says the ranking up is as appealing as COD4 and W@W. However, other players in every room he was in commonly complained of the latency.

Controller wise, I’m getting the hang of using the controller again, and it is still as clunky as ever. Understandably console gamers who are quite used to this medium will argue that controller is better than mouse and keyboard, but admit it, K/B for FPS is king, controller is best suited for sports and some genres. Personally I think the Aim assist feels like a cheat to me, it’s too easy. My COD3 skills where there was no aim assist are almost gone. I’m not sure if most console gamers prefer to turn Aim Assist off, but I bet they don’t.

Anyway, this will be my last COD4 I will ever spend my money on. But for the rest who are having fun on the console versions, game on and don’t forget that humans need sleep too!

  • Sixty dollars for (maybe) a six hour single player experience? Screw that noise.

Granted I’m sure the multiplayer is quite good, but not all of us care about it that much and considering some of the idiots I’m forced to put up with on Live (thank Christ for mute) sixty clams doesn’t seem like that sweet a deal anymore.

Honestly, these game companies are laughing all the way to the bank, and we’re all playing right into their hands. The game does look amazing, but what the hell happened to standards and actually making a full f*&%*$g length game? What’s next? Games a long as your average film? Oh well, people will say, no problem, it has multiplayer!

For the same price (even less now, since it has been out a bit) you can play Fallout 3 and I clocked in a whopping 90 hours in on that one. Even if I had not taken my time, it would have been a good 30, at least. That’s quality. Modern Warfare 2, on the other hand is a giant scam.

  • whats with everyone and all this ‘pc’s sux’, ‘nu, consloes sux’ and ‘controlers rule’ stuff i keep hearing about? why the hell cant they combine the two?

picture it, an mix of a console where you can pick if you use a mouse or a controller, and that both are included when you buy it, or better yet, USB-based.

and really, when you boiling it down, pc or console, they are all the same, so why cant we all just get alone?

now, on to the game… one word, awesome. simple as that…

    now, peace out!
