ps3flix (1)

PS3 owners no longer have to be jealous of Xbox 360 owners. Now, they too can stream Netflix goodness through their gaming console of choice. That is, with a little help from a free Netflix disc they can.

The loader disc should have arrived last week for those that jumped on the offer right away. Just pop that Netflix disc into your PS3 to load-up the software and away you go. Of course you have to use that disc, which activates the service via Blu-ray’s BD-Live service, every time you want to stream something from Netflix, but it’s better than nothing. Hopefully Sony and Netflix are working on a software update that will enable the service without this step. Hopefully.

  • Matt you noob, I doubt PS3 owners were ever jealous of xbox owners. If they can afford a PS3 believe me they could have bought a 360 as well. In fact I am sure many probably did as well as a wii, DS, PSP, etc…

  • I have to say, I’m very excited about the future of netflix and the ps3. I got my disc last Friday, perfrect for a Friday night movie.

However, the user interface is fairly beta. Which is okay, it’s the first build for the consumers, and when Sony integrates it into the dashboard, I’m sure the overall user experience will increase.

  • I think that the disc is the work around to the 360 exclusive deal. Technically Netflix is available exclusively on the 360, thats just a Blu Ray Disc of Netflix. I doubt the PS3 can have a software patch because then Netflix would be violating the Microsoft exclusive deal. Just hazarding a guess though.

  • Friday was netflix day.

I actually was jealous of the netflix on the xbox since I used to have one and after it RROD’d on me I sold it for a PS3. That was the only feature I really missed (other than GOW/Halo) but now we got it.

The interface is a bit bland right now but it being sony and all, I’m just glad it WORKS. And works well. Hope they continue expanding their catalog at a rapid rate.

  • I just assumed the disc requirement was a cute legal maneuver around the exclusivity agreements Netfix has with Microsoft. Given the hardware horsepower of the PS3, I doubt a disc is actually required to help in the ‘heavy lifting’ of streaming.
