Cisco has confirmed that the next version of the Flip Video camera, everyones favorite tiny video camera, is getting Wi-Fi. The model is described as having “a large screen that slides to reveal the record and menu buttons underneath.”
Pocket-lint is also reporting there won’t be a touchscreen. You can, however, upload video that you take over Wi-Fi.
Clearly the iPod Nano and iPhone video availability is making things hard for Pure Digital by essentially stealing their entire market. This will definitely even things up, at least for the folks who already love their Flips. Expect great deals on non-WiFi models in the weeks to come.

Decent video quality should come first imho
the quality is good enough for what its intended for, the wifi will be more useful than better quality.
The Flip cams work extremely outside in high light, far better then my iPhone. It also records in much higher resolution.
I am very happy with my Flip cam. I do wish it worked a little better inside.
Nice….
That is just awesome! cant wait to buy one.
i don’t think the nano with video is really selling that well. my understanding is that flip video is still doing very well and since the vid quality is way higher and it is purpose built for youtube, myspace and facebook sharing, that it is not really seeing much competition from apple. just sayin’
Wifi upload is the ULTIMATE!
I’d love the great deals on the non-wi-fi ones ;)
So where does the video get uploaded to over Wi-Fi? A new subscription service from Flip? YouTube? Facebook? my blog? Will there be a 1080i or 1080p model to compete with other handheld point and shoot video cameras (their real competition)?
I have a FlipHD. I loved it when I first got it but use it less and less. The only use my iPhone 3GS instead because I already have it in my pocket and I can instantly upload to nearly any service that has an app or email posting feature over 3G which is just as good as Wi-Fi in most public places.
I was going to ask the same thing…upload to where?
Upload to my computer would be nice, but I doubt this will be the case. Probably to a Flip web site, as you speculate. sucks for consumers but I can see why they would do this. Just another revenue opportunity.
Nice improvement, but it would really hit the sweet spot if they offer something like the TweetPeek and the prepaid 3G service.
What it needs is some sort of basic image stabilization.
Far more important for me would be an external mic jack. I don’t care about wifi, I care about good sound…
This WI-FI option in upcoming flip camera will gonna rock :) i really like this
Flip camera goes wifi…. thats really great news..

Will they finally give it a built in lens cover so I don’t have to fumble getting it in and out of a case? I just want to be able to throw it in my pocket without worrying about scratching or getting the lens dirty.
I am so excited. I wonder if they used my idea. I hope so. A few months ago I e-mailed the Flip company and suggested that the Flip should have Wi-Fi so people could upload videos to YouTube.
I can’t wait to see what it looks like.
I have always held off buying the Flip until they came out with a version that I like. This one may be it.
For me, the feature I want to see in a Flip is:
- HD
- Size (depth) of Flip Nano
- Buttons like a Flip Ultra, not the Flip Nano
- Screen size of a Flip UltraHD
- Wi-Fi so videos can be uploaded to YouTube
Most of the feature I want may be met with this Wi-Fi version of the Flip.
