You can now run Chromium OS, the open source developmental version of Google Chrome OS, on your Dell Mini 10v. Don’t have one? Neither do I, so don’t feel too bad.
It make take some time to set up. For one, the download (an image file), as put together by a few of Dell’s Linux guys, weighs in at 7.5GB. Not only will that take a while to download, but you’ll also need a flash drive with at least 8GB of free space on there—another thing I don’t have. You’ll also need access to another Linux-based computer (well, any computer that can run the “dd” command) to get everything up and running.
Beyond that, it does appear to be fairly painless to instal. You download said image file then copy it from the Linux computer using “dd” to the flash drive. You take this flash drive, stick it into you Dell Mini 10, and away you go!
What’s your reward for going through all that? Running Chromium OS, of course. Think of it as Google Chrome OS, but way alpha.
I’m going to file this under the “Why would you bother doing that? Because you can” category.

Google Chrome OS SUCKS
why would someone want to install ChromeOSucker in a computer? to give to the information gigoloogle vacuum cleaner type of ‘cloud’ all ones information? to transform a computer in a interactive TV? for what? to gain brownie points developing aplications to multi-millionaires BEAST of corporation?
WHY?
You guys should be working for MS…
How can someone judge Chrome OS before even testing it?…
Oh yes, you knew it… Paid prejudice…
Now go pay those $$ back to MS so that they can give you Win7 Starter…. hehehhee…
well, Gigoloogle paid fr$$ mozilla “foundation” for how long?
I find so stupid when people write Micro$oft with this Dollar ($), are the other corporations doing their buss. for the love of Jesus Christe!?
Grow up!
Google wants to suck it all! And control it all! They pimp information that are not theirs, they wnat to suck everything in, Chrome OSucker is just anoter attempt to do just that!
May be
1) It promises to be fast, to boot up as fast as a TV.
2) We already have everything in cloud already. (Like credit card number, all personal info) This approach is nothing radical, from security point of view. With chrome OS, only thing we will be storing is few more information, which is not
3) Most of the thing we do in computer is net. And if we are talking about netbook, this is the way netbook should be built.
About Microsoft and Google
There are few things in Microsoft drives me crazy.
1) The way its trying to block all news from google ’s search index.
2) The ebay-bing cash back, if you use IE browser, or some other kickback if u use IE.
These are some evil tactics to have its monopoly.
Google’s ability make its scary, but a trust I have on it, it wont go evil. Since they have not done anything bad to loose that trust.
SHEEP
The type of information that the Information Gigoloogle wants to suck it is unprecedent in human history! Don’t compare that with data from debit cards transactions! Not even TAX autorities would be capable of ‘knowing’ so much of you and your familie!
Google is BEAST, a bomb waiting to explode.
you = the perfect google customer. you know nothing.
@BOMB (Google is BEAST, a bomb waiting to explode.)…
Give an example… what you think will happen…
@gian Well I am using google’s service fro 5 years or so and did not have any problem yet.
I mean, guys what exactly will happen when this so-called beast will wake up or explode. Will it take all my money from bank account. Or will auction my identity.
Even Microsoft has 90% of all operating system, Even they can do all those evils that you predict google will.
Among Google and Microsoft, I trust Google more.
You Microsuck Vistards are too funny.

Not computer, netbook. I would never buy one, but maybe there will come a time where we have a netbook in the loo instead of magazines.
Two reasons why you get chrome:
– fast web browsing. this is the only thing you can do on a netbook anyway, so it better be fast in the limited hardware that it has.
– i better not spend time running windows updates, antivirus installation, updates, scanning,
adware cleanup, disk defragmentation and other crap maintenance for my bathroom laptop. seriously.
I see the Microsoft bot army is out in force.
“Be afraid of (insert competition here)… buy Microsoft products… Windows (insert version here) is Awesome…” yadda, yadda, yadda.
Climb back into your holes.
How stupid is this? Demonizing Microsoft? Are the other corporation more of a Christian Church? Well, Apple certainly is a Cult! Apple Tablet in the body of Ron Hubbard have the same ontological status!
Remember this: History repeat itself, first as a Tragedy (Microsoft) and later as a FARSE (Google)!
Hey Klaus / Bomb / whatever you are going by today….
You’re adding nothing of value to the discussions with your paranoid delusions. Please STFU and take your meds.
It doesn’t sucks “that much” when you’re talking about netbook… I think this hacking to Dell Mini 10V is lucrative. Obviously, a lot of tech-critiques already forseen a “hacking-spree” for chrome OS. Obviously, open-source released to our world has always been subjected to this kind of utilization. Anyway, its good this one is a white-hack…
see the Chrome’s detailed review: http://bit.ly/google-chrome-os-best-or-worst-judge-it
Sounds promising, but only for my netbook though.. Never in desktop (if ever there will be a future release) LOL
Crybaby.
Google OS sucks Sucks SUCKS
Google Chrome OS is cool but installation is a pain in the ass hehe…
Can we not get this in a USB and stick it into the netbook so you can have the OS up and running….
now that would be cool. have my own computer in a stick that just boots into a browser…
I’m soooo pumped for Chrome OS, I’m gonna try and set up my laptop to dual boot it if I can when it comes out
Nice found, Nicholas,
I guess it is a good way to try it.
I would install it, but my Mini is too full of Hackintosh’ builds to fit it all ^.~
I downloaded an abridged version of ChromeOS (http://tinyurl.com/yzppt9y) and ran it through Sun Microsystems VirtualBox. It was a big *YAWN*. Maybe I was expecting to much.
Google Chrome OS is 1 year away from its official release. It’s crude and not enough to be used day to day. The same with Wave – you rush to say how much it sucks, but those are previews. I guess no wonder people don’t rush to release previews as all idiots around the globe are gonna have their time bashing left and right.
If you’re not proud of your product, don’t release it for the world to judge. It’s really that simple.
I work at a start-up, and we would never release a partially completed product if we are not completely behind it. If anything, it would be in a private beta with a few friends and family trying it out.
@jhon, If you are indeed working for a startup, you would certainly know that Open Source projects work differently. They are released early for collaborative development and to get all other potential partners on board.
Some guys here get into this silly fight – Microsoft vs Google. It is best avoided here.
BTW, remember, at time when some had started charging for their email service and most others were contemplating charging fees for their toy like email services, it was Google that changed the landscape by offering an efficient email service with an unheard of gigabites of storage space. Not the whole of the world can pay the $ denominated fees. So, it is because of Google that we still get these competitive products being offered free… which I believe is necessary in a world where vast populations of people live in poverty.
In contrast, if some other corporations have their way, they may eventually end up charging for making web searches.
Windows 7 Beta was 1 year away from release, but it was AWESOME.
Yeah, but this is basically an alpha version of it, not even beta yet.
@Mohammed Hossam
Wave cant be compared with an Operating System. Wave is first of its own kind. Whereas what Microsoft had to in case of Win7, is to remove all the problems of Vista. Make the OS as good as Mac OS X.
But Wave is totally, new of its kind. It needs a lot of input from the potential users. And unlike Windows 7 OS, its an Open Source model.
how about Acer?
2009 IE8 IE7 IE6 Firefox Chrome Safari Opera
October 12.8% 14.1% 10.6% 47.5% 8.0% 3.8% 2.3%
chrome yeah right, the next what?
Completely Wrong stats
yet another time waster…
I believe OS X ships with the dd command – so no need for a Linux machine specifically.
“It make take some time to set up.” Hence it meant to be ….
It may take some time to set up
Lot of hate for something that’s not even really released…
This really shouldn’t surprise you. Microsoft is known for pumping huge sums of money into disinformation and fear surrounding anything that represents a competing product or platform. Since ChromeOS goes right for the jugular, I am not surprised at all to see the paid trolls out in force.
There is no logical way anyone could form such a negative/acidic impression of something so early in it’s life cycle. Not without being paid to do so.
Just remember everyone, the hate is not coming from real people. It’s coming from the human equivalent of a bot.
oh, microsoft doctor evil theory, again!?
GROW UP!
Ah… see there… I’ve scared one out of its hole!
No – he’s just restating MSFTs communication strategy. They’re a corporation whose business is threatened by competitors like Google so naturally they will attempt to get their “message” across; and paid commenters/bloggers etc are one method they use.
Well! I am waiting to test Jolicloud instead of Google Chrome OS :)
This is going to be cool
You won’t install it “right now.” They have this download on a dial-up 56Kb noisy phone line that will take fucking days to download! Thanks Dell!!
Already installed it on vmware and it works fine, except for the wifi part of it.
Also, not sure if I’m missing something very obvious here but how do you shutdown? :)
Wow, never expected to see these comments. What’s with all the bashing? If you don’t like it, don’t use it – I use just about every modern OS I can get my hands on and I can say this looks promising.
Need a machine I can run this on… I tried it a few days ago and it doesn’t seem to work very well on a machine with ATI graphics. Whether the slowness was because of that or the SD card I was running it from I have no idea.
Chrome OS is free and safe and offers exactly what I want from my computer.. the ability to browse the internet minus the malware. And this is where Chrome WINS hands down.
MS better start improving your products and better yet slash the rates. No one will want to pay so much for a buggy software. Win7 is no exception. It’s buggy and unsafe.
Isn’t it high time that users start feeling safe to browse the web like the good old days? Why is it that in this day and age I have to work with a buggy software that has a whole lot of silly loopholes any crazy bugger can hack into?
I’m no MSFT lover but I run Windows 7 in a VM on my Mac Pro at work. So far – no crashes or hangs in the last three months. Several of my colleagues (I work in IT) have been running it since RTM – very stable.
Maybe you have crappy hardware or bad drivers?
In other news: you can install ubuntu/debian/centos/your_favorite_distro on Dell Mini 10v. Why do we bother to report this? Because we can.
There should be a torrent somewhere already to go.
GOOGLE CHEATS INDIA ?? If you have the net connection please check it immediately. . This is Serious! After the Chinese demands for Arun achal Pradesh, Google now has started FOOLING Indians as well! Google shows different maps for US, Indians and Chinese. In the Indian Version, it shows Arunachal Pradesh as Integral Part of India … In the US Version, it shows Arunachal Pradesh as a Disputed region… In the Chinese Version, it is not even part of India… Where as in the Chinese version, it shows Arun achal Pradesh as an INTEGRAL PART of CHINA ! Our bloody polititions have no will. Let us take it up. INDIAN VERSION (http://maps. google.co. in ) US VERSION (http://maps. google.com) CHINESE VERSION (http://ditu. google.com/)
You can now buy an Acer Aspire Netbook that dual boots Chrome OS and Windows 7 – best off both worlds, then you guys don’t have to argue in the comments :)
Search for Chrome Netbook on ebay, I think there’s only one.
I really don’t understand, why should I install chrome OS instead a light linux version as lxde or xubuntu?
Lxde just need 128MB of RAM, and have much more than a browser.
And besides Google Chrome for Linux is in development, if you like so much the chrome
At this moment in time why would i want to install this? -A lightweight Linux distro is better.
Google try to take and buy everything in the virtual industry and now, it has came to OS. But, the quality is bad.
Just updated the http://www.memac.com/chromeos list to include the latest Dell Mini v10 Chrome OS build image and instructions. Enjoy!
If it works on the mini 9 I might try it out on my spare ssd. But if it doesn’t…oh well.
