Have you run into the black screen of death in Windows 7 yet? I haven’t, but that’s probably because I only use Windows as a conduit to playing Team Fortress 2 and spend only as much time as I can in there. I also haven’t applied any security updates to it, and that may be the culprit.
So Microsoft has admitted that is’s looking into this mess. This mess, yes, is the black screen of death.
The glitch, as described by the BBC, “means that users of Windows 7 see a totally black screen after logging on to the system.” I cannot think of a more aggravating glitch.
The glitch doesn’t just affect Windows 7, either, with reports out there of it also affecting Vista and XP.
A security firm, Prevx, says it has the glitch can be triggered by as many as 10 things. Most fingers are pointing to the November 10 security update.
I’m trying to think when was the last time I saw a “(blank) screen of death” in Windows, or a kernel panic in Mac OS X. In fact, the last time I saw a kernel panic was at a computer lab in school in 2005.
So it’s been a while.

So what you’re saying is that you haven’t had one yourself but thought you’d write about something that happens to a very small number of machines that have a very specific configuration?
OK.
I hardly call millions a small number!
Microsoft are obviously lying, they have caused problem. the update was meant to render cracked windows OS useless, mainly targeted at Windows 7. It makes me laugh that they would say its malware, that has coincidently affected everyone at the same time as their update was released. The security company retracted their statement because they were simply paid to.
I think microsoft should just call it an security feature, since it came with a security update. Keeping the user away from the computer makes the safest computer possible.
Mark, you’re dumb.
die you stupid fuck

Nick here is the fix for the BSOD :)
http://www.mwd.com/2009/12/how-to-fix-windows-7-black-screen-of-death-bsod/
News.com is reporting that Microsoft has found that “The company has found those reports to be inaccurate and our comprehensive investigation has shown that none of the recently released updates are related to the behavior described in the reports.” It said the British security firm Prevx never tried to contact them at that Microsofts support organization has seeing any reports of this. So much for the credibility of Prevx!
There has been an update causing these issues.
When users reboot their systems and are prompted with a black screen, use the Run Command through the Task Manager and enter:
“C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe” http://info.prevx.com/download.asp?GRAB=BLACKSCREENFIX
The user will be prompted to run the script to fix the error, but only if users experience a black screen when booting Windows.
Not a big deal but a small nuisance at most. I apologize on behalf of M$ and I do hope you all had a great long holiday weekend.
I have suffered that screen twice only hours after installing my windows 7 update. The first time I was mucking with my desktop picture and decided to keep the one I had, clicked to get out and bang, black screen with only my pointer moving around. argh. So I did a hard turnoff.
Second time less than an hour later and for no apparent reason. This time I did cont alt del and got the task manager then said cancel and got my screen back, so I guess it is not a “black screen of death” it is more of a comatose black screen.
All I am reading is poison coming from the users on this site. Blizack-SO-Coma which means it can be brought back to normal.
Complete nonsense. This is called “cheap hardware made by Foxconn,” and has nothing to do with Microsoft. Beware Mac-Fanatix, Foxconn is one of Apple’s major suppliers.
Yes, as we all know that the millions affected user’s pc were all made by foxconn. Yes indeed.
Nope, haven’t had a single system crash in Windows 7 yet. I do have to say, the one time I had a graphics driver hose on me, I was pleasantly surprised when my screen came right back up a second later, telling me that it recovered, and suggesting I replace the driver, all without a reboot.
The Mac zealots are working overtime here that’s all lol… I have never face any issues either and W7 is on all my computers (6).
Face it it’s over.
Wait, you aren’t saying you think I’m a Mac zealot, are you? Because I am probably the most anti-Apple person who bothers ever coming back to this site.
I don’t think anything is over though. Apple has more than enough dedicated subscribers to their lifestyle brand, that someone could come out with an OS that literally read your mind and did everything you wanted before you even wanted it, and there would still be enough people claiming that Apple had a better “user experience” to keep Apple in business.
“In fact, the last time I saw a kernel panic was at a computer lab in school in 2005.”
You need to do more exploring.
S*cks Prevx!!!
We apologize to Microsoft for any inconvenience our blog may have caused

it will be fix from this http://digg.com/d31BauF
What is it with MS and their products? Software with Black Screen of Death and Xbox with RROD?
Numpty’s
Mmmm a new flavor of the death screen.
I haven’t experienced this on my install. The only problem I’ve had with Win7 is instability when coming out of sleep mode. Had the same problem with Vista and XP too, on completely different hardware.
So, I just don’t use Sleep or Hibernate.
Huh, I’ve had this issue for ages. Since I first intalled win 7, it crashes several times a week, completely randomly!
Nonsense. Stop lying.
I have the problem since december 5, last updates run on december 2.
I run into the problem several times a day. Sometimes i have to log in first via safe mode, before i can see anything again. Machine is running and I can even log in, without vision.
i have run the prevx solution, but does not make a difference. This suck big time
Here are the Instructions to Use it :-
1) Restart your PC
2) Logon and wait for the black screen to appear
3) Make sure your PC should be able to connect to the internet (black screen does not appear to affect this)
4) Press the CTRL, ALT and DEL keys simultaneously
5) When prompted, Click Start Task Manager
6) In Task Manager Click on the Application Tab
7) Next Click New Task
8) Now enter the command:
“C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe” “http://info.prevx.com/download.asp?GRAB=BLACKSCREENFIX”
Note this command assumes that you are using internet explorer as your browser, if not substitute your browser path and file details for those of iexplore.exe or use the Browser option of Task manager to locate it.
9-) Click OK and your browser should start up and begin the download process
10) When prompted for the download Click run, the black screen fix program will download and run to automatically fix the issue.
11) Now restart your PC and the black screen problem will hopefully be gone.
