National Geographic Magazine has been one of the most important publications ever printed. From the insightful articles to the brilliant photography, NatGeo has been the benchmark that other magazines compare themselves to. Now, you can own a copy of every single issue without having to build a new addition to your house to store it.
What you get is a digital version of every issue, including the articles, pictures, maps, advertisements, everything that’s made NatGeo great over the years. It comes on a 160GB external hard drive, of which only 60GB is actually pre-loaded. Of course, you could probably pick up a 160GB drive for only $80, but it wouldn’t have all the NatGeo content. The package also comes with a DVD offering tips on better photography, a behind the scenes look at how National Geographic is produced and interviews with some of the photographers about their most famous pictures. It’ll set you back $199.95, but I think it’s totally worth it. Honestly, I’ll probably be ordering a copy for my personal library.

Holy shit, do want!
that’d be sweet to have :D i’ve got a copy of nat geo from 1978 in my basement :D
Hopefully I will have the money to buy it soon :D
Nat Geo is pretty digi savvy, with their twitter accounts, Facebook, funky website and now this
That is totally awesome!
sounds good for us.
I would like to have
This is an amazing idea in and of itself. Makes it even better that it’s national geographic.
Is there any way to have subsequent years added to the drive? That would be nice…
Yes, they say that they’ll be providing additional years (for a fee).
Or you can just buy the DVD set for $70.
There are (supported) ways to copy the content to your local hard drive, assuming you have 50GB free on C: (they’re apparently still working on being able to copy to other drives – and there’s also a way to copy content on Macs, but I don’t know how full-featured it is, not owning one), which saves having to do disk-swapping.
Of course this is now available because National Geographic beat photographers in court and doesn’t have to pay them for this use. The sad part is, photographers are already hurting from the loss of work out there, and NG just keeps making money off of their life-risking efforts.
But that also means this is not, and never will be interactive in any way. It will never be anything more than the equivalent of PDFs of every page of every issue.
Why? Because if they did, that would be considered a new work and they would have to pay photographers for the new use of their photos. (Which by all rights they should.
are the issues searchable, have they been indexed in any way?
Oh man. I have been waiting for a long time to sit down and read outdated information and look at really old photos. Now’s my chance!
this sounds awesome, NatGeo has some of the best photos in it. would be really interesting to see the old , old issues.
thanks for this useful post
Folks, do your research first. There is no search function and there are several other bugs NG are trying to fix still. The pictures do not flip and installing is difficult. Best to wait until they have it figured out some more.
What you say about searching seems odd, as the DVD-ROM version (which I have and would highly recommend) has a very easy to use search function. Also, the install with that is very easy. Maybe the hard drive version is different, though.
Good post
Eh, I remember how disappointed everyone was twenty years ago, when NG came out with its catalog on cd-rom. The text was blurry and the quality of the photographs was Sunday newspaperish.
