This just in: the WSJ is reporting that an Apple Tablet device thinger will ship in March after a January announcement. The announcement should come on the 27th or the 28th, according on various sources.
Apple Inc. plans to unveil a new multimedia tablet device later this month, but doesn’t plan on shipping the product until March, people briefed by the company said.
The device should sell for under $1000 and come in multiple finishes and may come with a nationwide Wi-Fi subscription similar to Boingo.
Our own sources believe that the tablet is well on its way. More as we get it.

I can’t wait to see how the “iSlate” look like. Very excited about it already.
Wow great news, I am damn longing to know how it works and looking forward to experience Mac on tablet PC. Hey John is Apple gonna use iSlate as the brand name for their tablet PC.
So is this better than the Crunchpad?
80% of life is just showing up.
A grand for a tablet? WOhhh, You gotta love people when they are waiting for something and they became so tired that they just want to hold it. On this case, a fake iSlate spec-s roaming around. Anyway as for the real deal. It seems we will be seeing the official apple tablet announcement on 27-28th, along with some beta testing iPhone OS 4.0 SDK goodies. Scrutinizing the fake iSlate and more: http://bit.ly/islate-specs-hoax-and-official-details
What crunchpad? The joojoo took it in the poopoo. Must be hard on Arrington to know that if the crunchpad had not failed, it would have gone on to fail. Double epic fail.

A Troller, wheuuu
another Troller wheuuu!
Did I just sing a cheering song?
This is not how the Apple Tablet looks like. This is just ugly.
It would be good if they could integrate kindle type service with some of the cool features of the other readers like Skiff Reader (http://www.skiff.com/skiff-reader_photos.html)
This with APP Access over the cloud would make this the all in one product, and the uses are endless. Probably take some time to get there, since this is first version.
BOOOOOM! I’m all pumped up!
Well this is interesting “a new multimedia tablet device” instead of tablet pc
You know, although I never have had the desire to buy an Apple product for the past few years, it may be near impossible for me to turn this one down.
Although, I probably should complain about there being to many gadgets out there. (Sorry if this comment is too long, I didn’t see any rules against it though).
The Gadget Problem:
It has come, it has come, the time to buy new things.
Shiny, spiny, turny, clicky.
Not one, not two, not even ten to observe.
But more than one can possibly imagine, it’s absurd.
There’s phone, and there’s media players, tables, readers, and tablet phone beepers.
They have screens, they make noice, they go beep beep ring beep.
One costs a hundred, another costs two, together their price is more than Chum Choo.
You can’t have them all, but we’ll market them as such, saying this is a deal, with ten percent off.
I rush around amazon, ebay, and froogle, to find that my pocket book just can’t hold to its GET FREE IPODS NOW, CLICK HERE!!!
I don’t want them all, I don’t even want half.
I just want to run free linux apps.
I don’t need to make phone calls, but ubiquitous internet is nice.
There’s netbooks, and notebooks, PDAs, but I still need my textbooks.
And up to now, I’ve to mention, the plethora of software.
There’s android, and iPhone, Memo, Rockbox, WebOS, and too much more.
In the end, you can only have some, as there’s not that much money to be had.
But be sure, that in three months, your device, will be old and bland.

Wow… you just had a conversation with yourself. Well done young man.
He, he. Thanks. Actually, it was a pseudo-poem I wrote when I took a look at all of the devices I wanted, and realized that my wonderful college funds couldn’t support it.
i’m waiting for that microsoft pda thing that’s going to come out. i need something portable, convenient that i can use to get a lot of work done (minus laptop).
The report from the WSJ is very sparse, and TechCrunch is also perpetuating a rumor. Let’s not get our hopes up until the Jobs has spoken.
As people have said, Apple is the only company that can get this kind of press without an actual shipping product. It’s almost as loud as when the iPhone was rumored three years ago…
In Canada, it will be 1.4 times as much without any subscriptions.
Though, there may be a special “initial low-price offer” on Bell WiFi or the like, for 2MB/mo of data for $95/mo.
Agreed… Although it looks like the iPhone is 2x+ the cost in Canada ($299 in US = $700 in Can).
Ridiculous
The iPhone is the same price in Canada, you are comparing the subsidized US price on contract in the US with an unlocked full-price unit in Canada.
Can’t wait to get my hands on it!
WSJ: pretty reliable source
Tablet launch in March: plausible
Nationwide WiFi subscription: ridiculous to the point of making every other point seem unlikely
If there’s a tablet, I could see Apple announcing far in advance of shipping it because of FCC approval like they did with the first iPhone. But that would be much more likely to happen if the tablet has integrated 3G, which I’d say is a lot more likely than WiFi subscription. Seriously, Boingo? Wifi is ubiquitous anyway, and increasingly moving to completely free at every local coffee shop, Starbucks and McDonalds. 3G? Probably. WiMax? Perhaps. But WiFi subscription? Absurd.
3G is sooo last decade. I have my Clear WiMax+Wifi solution ready for the wave of new wireless devices (like tablets) that is about to hit us. It already works great with my laptop and netbooks. By the end of my contract, LTE might be ready to take over.
I used a cell card until I no longer wanted to pay an extra hundred a month, but I miss it often! You may not want a connected device, but I would really like a built in option.
About time. :-) I hope it’s true this time. This constant rumorville thing is driving me nuts. A discussion was started at Baduku. http://www.baduku.com/topics/apple-tablet_187
If the tablet is out in the UK by March I would rather spend on it, than a new MacBook Pro. Can’t wait!
iRubberStamp that! This will be almost as good as the Free Custom Rubber Stamp and Free Shipping from my wife’s online Rubber Stamp Company. http://www.TexasImpressions.com Go apple. All her products are “made on an Apple.” See her cute video. http://animoto.com/play/LHkc9aTvHM4D1RW30Pma1g
@Dick Parker. enough said.
wow, if those pictures are any indication of the final product, then apple will get people to actually pay almost a thousand dollars to buy a slate PC. amazing what people will do for gloss. but i gotta admit, apple has the luxury of controlling every aspect of their products, and they make good use of that control with well designed and implemented products. their discipline will pay off yet again with what i’m sure will be a torrent of sales.
I paid $3500 for my Fujitsu Tablet PC, so it would be less than a third of that. Windows PCs are expensive! Right?
My take on the hardware and software features that I would like to see in this new device that Apple is announcing at the end of the month:
http://bit.ly/4Ydgj5
it’ll be a giant IPHONE w/ iphone OS NOT MAC OSX….. bigger everything, thats about it. No ‘wow’ here… Apple better have some AMAZING addition to it… otherwise… no multi-taskin =FAIL
I wanna see webOS on a tablet, hmm….. We’ll see at CES…
No multi-task and/or no flash on a web tablet = fail.
I actually think it will be an iPhone-OS-X hybrid thing. Then again, supporting three SDKs will be a pain, so the SDK will likely be more of an iPhone SDK.
(Also, the picture says at the bottom that it’s not the actual device).
Mac OS X with an iPhone emulator… It’s mostly the visual layer.
What is with those Photos? Please say it ain’t so. MacBook touch?? This is exactly what the world doesn’t need. I was fired up over a nice, thin, do-it-all 10 inch screen. But a 15 inch monstrosity that takes two hands to maneuver? Not so much. $1000? Not so much.
It would be a lock-in-place like most laptops. Imagine the stage-weight of it in a meeting. Lay it on the table and it’s glare city. It’ll use more wipes than a 1-year-old with a runny nose. No thanks, WSJ.
Bring on a small tablet the size of a Moleskine (but thinner) for $500-$600 that will roll into my iPhone data plan and I’m in.
Yeah, I saw the caption.
“Bring on a small tablet the size of a Moleskine (but thinner) for $500-$600 that will roll into my iPhone data plan and I’m in.”
That would be…an iPhone.
I would be perfectly happy with a 7″ iPhone (iPad?).
Can’t wait to read some reviews on this. If it’s only half as popular as the iphone Apple has another winner.
“The announcement should come on the 27th the 28th, according on various sources.”
WTF? “27th the 28th” What does that mean?
“…according on various sources.” Should that be “according to various sources.” ??
Did you submit this using Dragon Dictation on your iPhone?
I just hope it doesn’t invoke the same response from Diane Sawyer that the Segway did: “you mean that’s it?”
+1
The first time i have heard about it they suggested it would be a smaller device primarily for reading… But i like the concept.
“iSlate”? What’s a slate? If I don’t know, neither will many others.
“MacTouch” would be a MUCH better name, IMO.
Yes, I’d like a McTouch with lettuce, no onions, heavy on the pickles.
Would you like to make it a meal for $4.99?
No, just the McTouch. Thanks.
Wow, thats so damn amazing! Love Apple products and I’m still awaiting this new innovation.
Sheesh dude, did u see the “this is not it” thingamajig?
I mean, sure, photoshopped images of a fake Apple tabler “are so damn amazing!”.
Dweebs on the Internet who don’t read are “so damn amazing” in their dweebishness. Long live new words like “dweebishness”, which is what the JooJoo is full of, too.
With that much space, I can’t imagine that Apple wouldn’t find a genius way to use the proximity sensors that they already make for the iPhone.
If they delivered that device in the picture, how can you say CRACK?
If it can load in 9 seconds and has functional touch screen capability, that’s enough to live up to the hype. Most, if not all, of today’s touch screen tablets hybrid suck so bad you don’t even want to use them in tablet mode.
So is it going to run real OS X or iPhone OS? Or maybe Windows 7? :D If it runs iPhone OS then no thanks, I do not need a computer that can run only applications approved by Steve Jobs.
They should hire Arrington to evangelize this product!
Oversized iPhone?
Hope it comes with a fast SSD
as cool as this is, a piece of me secretly wants this to fail so hard since apple kept the world in the dark about this for so long…. its bad i know haha
A bigger iPhone?
A smaller MacBook?
Thinner than Air?
Does it have keyboard at all?
Huh… Apple knows how to create hype! They also know how to deliver on the hype!
I heard (from inside) it will be flexible/bendable.
Also, it is not just touch controlled, it is thought controlled, like in Avatar.
10″ to 11″? are they serious?
I can see an intermediate device in the 6″ to 7″ range. At 10″ to 11″ range, what you end up with is something less functional than a damn netbook for twice the cost.
6″ to 7″ ipod touch, I can see being of some use. anything bigger than that, I might as well use the laptop.
If this does turn out to be true I’d be very interested to see who actually ends up buying it. I still can’t figure out who it’s meant for – in the unlikely event that Apple do announce they’re making a tablet, what we’re going to see is a $600 10-inch iPod touch. What are you supposed to do with it? Use it as an e-reader? Nope, the Kindle’s cheaper. A netbook? Nope, a Macbook is under $1000 and has way more features, processing power and a bigger screen. Other netbooks are much cheaper (but they’re not Macs). An iPod? Right, I have an iPod. A smart phone? Ha ha.
I am getting one. I have a bunch of MacBooks and iMacs of all sizes and type, but this is too sexy to pass up.
I must say I am impressed Apple are so tight as they are with information leaks with the huge interest for this rumoured thing..
Wonder how it’ll look like :)
Looks kinda fragile with that big screen exposed… I worry enough handling my iPod touch
I’ll be curious about the specs for this thing. It better be significantly under 1000 if it doesn’t have the memory and power of a laptop.
I am so excited, I can not wait! Apple are brilliant at keeping this top secret as there’s only rumours something new is coming out but not exactly what it is.
It’s gonna so damn sexy and stylish. There making 10 million aren’t they!?
Well I guess since the Iphone is on its last leg, apple needs another gadget to spit out. But a tablet? This thing has the stink of fail all over it, but an apple fan boy/girl will tell you otherwise. This thing will be droped like the lisa was back in the day. Apple sells fashion items, since when has a tablet ever been a fashion statement?
Can´t wait to see that thing in the Apple Store.
i can’t wait ,too!
That is one thing that I so expected in this year!
I am interested to see how this impacts music sales and how it stacks up against the Kindle.
wow, cant wait. is this already out ?????
wow.i have it now.so nice…
i wish i had one, too :(
oh yes, i`m too :-(
