Hands-on video: Lenovo’s U1 hybrid tablet-netbook

They had this thing on display at Unveiled, but there was only one and nobody was really allowed to touch it. But Lenovo was nice enough to let me check this one out at their party last night in the Venetian. I’ve got to start running down to this meeting at a whole other location down the street, so I can’t write a blow by blow, but the video is pretty self-explanatory. The exhibitor is pretty much on autopilot, showing off the different modes, so you’ll get the full show.

My impressions were: pretty cool. The tablet portion is obviously at the very edge of its power, so I think they might have overdone it there, and a lot will depend on how well the little widgets work, but all in all it’s an elegant little interface. At $1000 it’s too expensive for anyone but zealous early adopters, though. At any rate, it’s a cool idea, and the hardware is really nice.

  • This is nice but I think the end product should use Nvidias Targa 2, probably get better performance and battery life.

  • From the brief demo of the prototype, it’s hard to tell how useful the tablet element will be, but it’s a neat idea that may tempt people who want the best of both worlds.
This one is a chameleon indeed. Details: http://bit.ly/lenovo-ideapad-u1-details

  • $299 and 12 hour battery life – goodbye overpriced ebook readers.

  • why are you trying to do all that pinching on the screen when its not needed and doesn’t do anything? It makes me sick and I would go as far as attacking anybody I seen doing that on a tablet or any screen for that matter

  • Yeah, I am far from impressed. This is VERY 1st generation and anyone who buys this will end up wishing they had waited for the 2nd gen or later – I am sorry to say.

Personally, I am going bat crazy waiting for someone to get their crap together and put out a decent first gen device – and this IS NOT the one.

At least it doesn’t have the stupid nib-mouse on the keyboard so characteristic of Lenovos.

  • The UI is soooo sluggish.

  • Wow unless they just dropped that piece of crap in the water… how could they ever go to market with that pile of shit?

  • Very underwhelmed by the demo. very sluggish indeed. IF Apple do release an iSlate ( sounds too much like ‘isolate’ to me- the IT press could have a field day with that one) I’m sure it will knock this one out of the water. I can’t imagine using that pressure sensitive screen after using the iPhones beautiful capacitance screen. Seems very much like yesterdays technology.
