In addition to all that tablet nonsense (maybe), Apple’s January 27th event should see new versions of iLife and apparently Aperture. Books have been leaking out on e-tailers over the last couple days that point to a debut this month of the next version of Apple’s photo editor. I use Aperture and am quite happy with it, though I hear Lightroom is even better — but we’ll see what happens a week from tomorrow.
If you’ve recently started shooting with a DSLR and haven’t used one of these advanced photo editors, you’re missing out. It makes my shots blow up like whaaat!

So here we are again on the verge of unlocking the secret of the apple tablet. Some people just can’t wait don’t they? What’s the countdown now… Ah yes, 5 days.. just hang on guys!

But I must say this Aperture 3 rumor is really new
Please please be the new version of aperture !
I really hope they announce Aperture 3 this week…
I just bought a Lumix GF1 and am currently limited to PS elements 4.0! Was minutes away from ordering Aperture 2 before I heard this speculation. I can wait… (hopefully it’ll have .rw2 RAW support…)
The book has been retitled Aperture 3 and reappeared on Amazon.ca and Amazon.jp

So, today is January 27th… so… Where is Aperture 3?
Every day that goes bye I loose confidence in Apple’s commitment to Aperture 3. Their attitude toward Aperture is what’s killing the program.
Maybe is to late for Aperture …
I hear ya David, I was bitterly disappointed today; not having Aperture 3 released ! When is it going to happen ?
Agree… I think I’ve lost faith already. Aperture doesn’t generate as much direct revenue as the i-gadgets, so I guess it makes sense from a short-term economic view to put it aside. But indirectly I’m sure it could be a huge opportunity for Apple. Even with the iPad, how could would it be to have a light version of Aperture that synced to it with your 5 star images and favourite projects?
It is so frustrating. Aperture is an excellent program that has some functionality that Lightroom does not have. I think they would get many users back – like me – if they just make it faster and more responsive as well as add some of the great functionalities from LR 2.
I am willing to wait for them to do it right, but we need to know that in fact, they are developing it and that Apple is fully behind it. That would go a long way to relieve my anxiety.
@David: I completely agree with you. If I knew it was coming I’d be fine with it, but with the silence I just fear I’ll be left out with an unsupported software that I will eventually have to move on from. I’d rather do it now if that’s the case.
I can’t believe I am about to download Lightroom. I love Apple but WTF?
I’m a working pro and 80% of the pro’s I work with use Aperture and are happy with it. We’ve had people prematurely give up on Apple before. Same thing with Nikon switchers. Aperture isn’t a static program. The parade of new plug-ins continue to give it new functionalities, and lessen the reliance on major new upgrades. I greatly prefer Aperture’s paradigm to Lightroom.
@David
Yes, it has plugins. But those plugins are destructive, not non-destructive.
To be fair, that is no different than Lightroom. All LR plugins, OnOne or Nik, are also destructive in LR. No difference there.
It’s coming…

scroll down and look at the date for Aperture 2.1.1 and Aperture 2.0 There is a reason that is there.
Its here: Aperture 3 is out with a trial

:)
Why can this people get it right? Aperture 3 is next to useless in my MAC PRO. Amazing new features I cannot use because they are none responsive. It reminded me the days of Aperture 1.
How can this people create amazing computer and can’t make Aperture perform adequately? It is upsetting to say the least.
The best thing ever happened to Lightroom is called Aperture.
I am sooo upset with Apple. How could they? To me, Apple just killed Aperture.
Well, I’m playing with it on an 18 month old MacBook Pro and the performance is the same as Aperture 2, which is better than Lightroom once you get 15,000 images in the library.
The new features are amazing though. I’m so glad I didn’t switch a couple of weeks ago.
I’m currently downloading the trial on my mac pro. We’ll see.
I have a few thousand raw’s.
In my experience Aperture 2 work faster and is more responsive.
Try the retouch tool and any of the brushes, specially zoom at 100%. At least in my MAc Pro is totally useless. Let us know how it does feel in yours.
I am using a MAC PRO 4 GB, 2.66 Ghz Dual Core Intel with an NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT with 512MB memory (superior to the one that came with the computer).
Working pretty snappy here. Did some brushes and retouch on some 15-20mb + raws. Was at least as responsive as A2.
If I maximize the brush size for retouch or some such and go to town there’s some delay, but I’d experience this in A2 as well.
2 x 2.8Ghz quad core
8 GB ram
8800 GT 512
I was also transcoding video with handbrake so all 8 cores and a decent amount of memory was pegged (though I know this is mostly gpu)
I tested it on an IMac Core 2 Duo with 2gb and worked much better than in my MAC PRO. Don’t understand why, maybe is because my MAC PRO is Dual Core Intel and not Core 2 Duo. Next, I am testing it on a MAC BOOK PRO. If it works, I am reformatting and reinstalling everything in my MAC PRO.
I’m using on a lowly Macbook Pro 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB of memory. Once I turned off faces everything started running just fine. But everything was crawling while face detection ran in the background.
