All the naysayers can feel free to eat their hats. Today Apple finally revealed the device we’ve all been whispering about for a good year or more. The Sasquatch of gadgets is real. We’ll update this with all the details as they happen; in the meantime, follow our live coverage.

Looks like a big iPhone to us.

  • 1GHz Apple A4 processor (custom)
  • 0.5″ thick
  • 1.5 pounds
  • 9.7″ Capacitive touchscreen (1024×768)
  • 16-64GB of SSD storage
  • 3G available but not in all iPads
  • $14.99 for 250MB, $29.99 for unlimited data on AT&T (no contract)
  • 3G iPads are unlocked, have GSM micro SIMs
  • Accelerometer, Compass
  • 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.1
  • Runs iPhone apps in window or pixel doubling
  • Hardware-accelerated OpenGL graphics
  • SDK out today
  • $499 for 16GB base model, $830 for all maxed out
  • Dock with hard keyboard available

There’s a very custom interface that I won’t bother describing — we’ll put video here as soon as Apple puts it up. Needless to say it’s very good looking. Prices start at $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB, $699 for 64GB. Adding 3G costs $130.

We’re seeing lots of great-looking apps from the live coverage of the event, including 3D games, a really sweet-looking calendar, a nice email app, and a New York Times app that looks really stunning.

Concerns, though:

  • No camera so no video chat
  • Limited space — 64GB may be a lot for an iPod, but when you’ve got movies and such, it’ll disappear real fast
  • Multitasking?
  • No SD or multi-card reader means that’s all the storage you get
  • It’s obviously no more customizable than the iPhone
  • iPod dock connection only means no easy connection of USB devices

Our minds all just got blown by the $499 starting price, though. I was thinking way more for sure. Nice move, Apple.

  • Great they named it something that sounds like a feminine hygiene product. “Honey will you pick me up a box of iPad’s while your at the store!”

    Big James

  • It is just amazing! Look at this iPad’s pictures too, look a bit different: http://www.guate360.com/galeria

  • wow, the name just inspires so many awesome things…. I liked the iTablet…

    • “Applet” would’ve been much nicer. Screw Sun.

But the $499 sticker is the last nail in the coffin for Crunchpad. Wonder if FusionGarage would change their business model into selling T-shirts…

“I sold my soul for joojoo, and all I got is this lousy T-shirt”

  • What’s so special about it? Seems like a big let down to me. What necessity is it filling, what advantage does it have? Dissapointed..

    • I like Apple, and have a lot of their products. But this thing? Really could care less. Doesn’t fill any need at all. Does not replace -

      Cell Phone
      Computer
      TV
      Gaming Systems (PS3, Wii, etc)

Really no need for anything like this. I also don’t want to have something else that has to be updated, synced and/or fixed.

      • ….Or tied to a network! I agree completely! Its just a big iPod touch….bored of it already…

      • From Google I bet

        • Probably yes, because he thinks realistically and doesn’t instantly go mental about some shiny new toy from Apple.

      • Actually this is the device that I’ve been waiting for for 10 years!
Of course I liked the iPhone when it was released, but I immediately thought: but I would prefer it to be twice larger!

I’ve seen lots of people saying that they do not see a need for an iTablet, and I don’t understand them :)
It’s clear that the (brilliant) idea of a TRUE TabletPC (not like all the TabletPCs that have existed for years) is that you can used it to read ebooks, browse the web, watch movies on the go, and on a NORMAL size, not on a miniature screen, and at an acceptable weight (and without the keyboard), and all of this at an ACCEPTABLE price of 500$ (not >1500$ as the TabletPCs prices have been until now)
Indeed, in the past 2-3 years there have been the Netbooks, but they all had the unnecessary keyboard, none of them was slim&keyboard-less&low-weight.
Actually the technological “revolution” that finally (after all these years) made possible the removal of the keyboard is the MULTI-TOUCH-SCREEN.
Indeed, if you want to blog or to write long emails and you cannot adapt to the onscreen-keyboard, then you can simply attach the iPad to the docking+keyboard.
Ok, as for the “CONs”, there are indeed of features missing from this first version of the iPad, which make me want to wait for v2:
-No camera so no video chat
        -No SD or multi-card reader
        -No GPS
-No easy connection of USB devices
-Possibly to Skype or SIP for free voice/video calls

  • No connection available for live blogging. TechCrunch needs a fail whale page so Twitter can write about it.

  • Seems strangely similar to the CrunchPad.

  • Devin, I’d like to know exactly who was a naysayer? You mean the same people who said there wasn’t an earthquake in Haiti? Oh right – nobody.

  • Looks a bit Droid-ish ey?

  • after all the hype…
    definitely a letdown

    • wth were you expecting?!?! unrealistic expectations are the only cause of a letdown.

      • At least the real OSX.

That HP Slate device with Windows 7 just murders this iPad. I mean come on, why would I pay $499 for this low version when I can get a HP Mini 311 with Windows 7, 1080p video playback and all the ports (including HDMI for HDTV) for $429.

        • I agree… While I truly love my iPod and my MacBook, this thing is a complete letdown. No real OS and no connectivity to anything. It doesn’t even have phone capabilities! Why bother?!?

  • Just checked Bing vs. Google on live search results on iPad launch …Interesting screen shot. Thoughts?

  • Looks like a big iPhone. Why would anyone who has an iPhone want this? I don’t get it.

  • Social media reaction to the iPad. http://bit.ly/cOWXLS

    • If you look on the main site, you will see the profile is actually posted by APPLE 9 MONTHS AGO. The only rumor it seems they did not leak was iSlice…but that would have been a better name.

Seems Apple is running a superior and sophisticated buzz operation there.

Look under the brands category for the company or user name: http://viralheat.com/social_trends

      Apple is listed.

  • Man this is a let down, it just looks like an overgrown iPhone, horrible name and only 64GB?

  • It was born with a huge FAIL written on top… Most epic deception… what is new in this crap?? Tellme who will pay U$1000 or more for this crap when you can pay $300 for a nice netbook that can do much more things. Steve J. nutz when thinking that there is space for something between the small notbooks from now a day and cellphones. FAIL!!!!

  • In hindi iPad means I fart :-)

  • Let’s see how the press spins this. It really is very disappointing that it is nothing more than a large iPhone.

  • Apple… The “Zombie Religion”

Apple makes its profits off of Chinese slave labor!!! ;^(

    APPLE POLLUTES THE EARTH!!!

60 plus hour weeks and NO OVERTIME & BENEFITS!!!

Where is the stimulus for the “USA” APPLE…?

Made in America… the land of the FREE!!!

Long live Open Source & Free Software forever!!!

    ;^)

Another sad day for mankind… :^(

    PEACE

    • Americans still think of china as a place that offers slave labour to the world. Little do they know in most Chinese cities the GDP per capita is already higher than those in the US. Maybe that’s the reason the US is losing it’s edge.

  • This is a bit of a letdown so far.

  • People really think this thing is that damn exciting?

I just don’t see why it’s so exciting but I suppose I better start seeing what effects it will have on web design trends.

    *Sigh* — Apple people.

  • Epic Fail. No Multitask. No Flash. WIFI Only (WTF!). This is a piece… Can’t wait for the $700 price tag.

  • This is what we’ve been waiting for? What a waste. Why on earth would anyone buy this if they already have an iPhone? Can you write on the screen and save drawings or something? If not, what’s the point?

    • “Can you write on the screen and save drawings or something” – I can do that already with SketchBook on my iPod touch.

Apple demo’s iWork, so you can work in Word or Excel docs.

      • You can work in Word or Excel docs… Yeah, with a touch screen keyboard. Why bother? Oh, wait… There is that $70 dollar keyboard dock… Kind of takes the portability away, doesn’t it? Sooo, entry level price is now 569.99… If you want a physical keyboard to type documents with… Sooo, Why not just get a netbook and save yourself some money and enjoy all the functions of a computer with a real computer OS. What if you are typing a document and can’t remember the definition of a particular word? Why, you could just head over to the dictionary app and look it up, right? Maybe go online and check the definition? Wrong! No multi-tasking! You had better save your document; exit the app; open the dictionary app; look up the definition; close the dictionary app; open the word app; continue typing. Nonono, only sheep will buy into this. I would have been damn impressed with this device if they would have went with an OSX varient, but no. They decided to choose to make a larger iPod…

Seriously, if Microsoft had any sense, they would hold a press event right now and announce their Courier device they had released a mock-up of last year. Not that they would do a thing like that, it would make too much damn sense. I wasn’t sure if they could pull the software the showed off, but after using MS Office One Note, I am completely conviced that they are capable of such a sublime device. Seriously folks, if you want to see what this pile of shit Apple has heaved upon us should have been like, than I dare you to watch the video microsoft released of the courier. It’s readily available on youtube.

The video is a little dry, but it’s an amazing piece of kit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFQWc79TYcU

  • This is what we’ve been waiting for? What a waste. Why on earth would anyone buy this if they already have an iPhone? Can you write on the screen and save drawings or something? If not, what’s the point?

  • I freaking nailed it.

No cam, no flash, a glorified ipod touch for hundreds of dollars more because of a 9.7 touch screen. No worth it.

  • Very disappointing..

No Flash. No Java. Probably no Background apps. Completely Locked in. Looks like a huge iPhone with an even bigger bezel.. Where is a front facing camera for video calls etc??

As other’s have said the only question left is HOW MUCH – anything even slightly more over a lovely Samsung Netbook will make this device dead before it arrives.

  • looks like crunchpad to me !

  • You have to wonder why it took so long to develop? So far there is nothing new here – it’s just a big iphone. Apple needs to think different again.

Unless there is something special about it that Jobs hasn’t talked about yet I think the iPad is the most boring product I’ve seen in a long time. It may be collecting dust in the back of Apple Stores by this time next year.

    • Exactly.

Where’s haptic touch, or an oled screen.

Apple products have always been pushing boundaries but this seems very conservative, and borderline useless.

I love my (jailbroken) iphone, but this ipad doesn’t interest me in one bit.

  • It has a little pull cord to turn it on..

  • PornAtWorkPad

  • Remember that this is primarily supposed to double as an e-reader and a media player – with the capacity for social networking and phone thrown in. If it is as portable as it sounds and looks it might succeed.

Take a look at http://virtualsextouch.com to see some of the things that you might be doing on the iPad soon.

    • I could see more people reading books and newspaper on this, ist great, but not like kindle i suppose. Its going to compete with kindle in some ways but kindle has that ink technology. I would assume your eyes are gonna burn if you read books on the ipad.

  • Boring… nothing new here… move on.

  • So, I love the iPhone, cause it is (1) cool (2) fits in my pocket. With the iPad, now I will need to find a pair of jeans with huge back pockets! I foresee the “iJeans” coming to a store near you! What not to wear!

  • Can’t imagine in what situation I would use this.

  • Giant iPhone? Only Brushes is any good.

  • No GPS, No Cam ??? hmm.. the price has to be at least under $ 500

  • ..how would the Crunchpad have compared had it come to market?

  • Hmm. Lamepad.
Sure it’s beautiful, the graphics are beautiful. But without background processes, multitasking, sort of reminds me of a 2010 version of DOS.

    • Yeah, cause that is just killing the iPhone.

      • It isnt helping it. Lets see how Android does now that the iPhone has actual competition.

But really… the iPhone is a smartphone. And a great one. The argument can be made that those things dont matter that much in a smartphone.

But in a giant 10″ slate that needs a bag? Explain to me how you plan to use this? So you’re going to what exactly? Replace your laptop? Carry this, and a laptop AND a phone? Pick the laptop sometimes or this sometimes?

Not to mention that Windows based touch netbooks are already here with more coming and now Android based touch netbooks are on the way – both built around speedy platforms from Intel and NVidia and running a full OS.

Unless Apple has an ecosystem silver bullet, they F’d up here…

  • I really want to know if iBooks will be able to incorporate video.

  • DONT KNOW ABOUT YOU, NOW THE NEWS ARE OUT, I AM HEADING TO JOOJOO SHOPPING WEBSITE TO GET ONE FOR ME!!

  • An iTouch magnified? It’s not a phone. Is it a step back? With iPhone I only need one object and it’s pocket sized. Or it’s main market going to be up against laptops? There’s a market but evidently I’m not it’s target. So it’s not all about me!! How about YOU? Why do YOU need one? Tell us!

  • This device will compete with e-reader, like the B&N’s Nook and Amazon Kindle.
It’s like a big iphone so it’s very likely it’s compatible with Amazon’s ebook. I think this is a better gadget for reading e-books, digital magazine and comics, better than the itouch and iphone at least.

    • how is it a better reading gadget if it doesnt have the kindle ink technology. I read books for hours, my eyes would burn after 30 minutes on the ipad. I would wait for someone else to buy one and then check it out. Or wait till they make it better

  • I am not so hyped about it anymore :-(
It looks like an oversized iphone.

  • “Looks like a big iPhone to us.”

    -And that’s why I’m a naysayer.

  • I don’t get what people what would you use it for? A modern day Etch-a-sketch?

  • I’ve been waiting for this, that’s why I didn’t buy a nook or kindle yet. If it’s not a strain on the eyes while reading and sold at reasonable price, then it’s a buy.

  • Great concept, but not nearly enough memory for the price point. I know, though eventually it will evolve and it will be one of my toys.

  • Looks like a promotional iTouch.

This looks like a knee jerk reaction to the amazon kindle.

    Can’t win them all.
