Surprised that the iPad doesn’t have a camera? Yeah, so are we – and if these screenshots of the just-released iPad emulator are any indication, so is someone on Apple’s software development team.
Tucked away within the iPad’s contacts application is an “Add Photo” button, purposed with.. well, adding photos. Everyone likes having photos assigned to their contacts, and there’s more than enough space on this thing to sync photos of all your friends – so nothing too strange there. What is odd, however, is the prompt that pops up: do you want to “Choose Existing Photo”, or do you want to “Take Photo”?
So what’s going on here? Did the iPad once have a camera, and it was pulled on such short notice that they didn’t have time to strip it out of the software? Does Apple planning on stealthily adding a camera to the features list some time in the next 60 days, as some sort of super-late “One more thing..”? Or did Apple just port much of the iPad contacts app from the iPhone version, and forget to lop out one of functions? The last possibility seems most likely – but if it ends up being that second one, we’d be just fine with that.

Think about it do cars come out with the best features all in one year, (2001 the tail light are the bulbs, the 2002 version, the taillights are led’s) Its doesnt make sense for Apple to come out with all the bells in whistles all on the first go around. its like a girl. would you want a girl, would you want her to show you everything on the first date?? (i bet you would) but you have nothing to look foward to from there after.. its not the end of the word. Im sure the other devices in your pocket can take the pics for now.. The verison 2 will have all the other features that we are all wanting now!!
Yes, what happened to the ingenious multitasking, solar panel cells, flash cam, SMS apps?
I guess we need to settle down and wait for some GEN 2 for this one. Anyway, this event just proves some of the many speculations around iPad.. especially the one being thrown by the CEO of Mahalo. Details: http://bit.ly/apple-tablet-details-and-history
I agree with you on that, and there are so many people hating on the iPad just because it doesn’t have what they want. I think it’s just really annoying, but that was a great point that you brought up :)
The iPad is meant to work closely with the iPhone. iPhone as camera — Bluetooth — iPad gets picture. There will be an easy add on app for that… what do you think?
I think I never wanted to have to carry both around to begin with.
there are many faithful iphone fanboys willingly carry this iphone on STEROID device on their neck like a BIG clock to show it off.I really can see them doing it.
LOL! Yeah just like Flava Flave….
I think i will be one of them
but not like flava
This is evident that Apple wants everyone to buy this 1st-gen iPad so they can release the next one in half a year with the camera so people have to buy it again.
what’s wrong with that?I did with my iphone 3G and upgraded to 3GS for the same thing.(now I’ve 2 iphones) Apple think that we’re all suckers and apple is right! We’ll buy anything, even an empty box as long as there an apple logo on it.
Swing and a miss….
Half of the key features for a good netbook are missing here. So, what good is it besides an expensive e-reader?
It is able to browse web (+youtube), view video and pictures, listen to music…… Everything that a big ass ipod touch can do (with certain app-related exceptions.)
no flash? My android phone has that. :)
my nokia E51 has flash-enabled and is a modest multi-tasker! why bother getting an expensive e-reader which does NOT allow you to multi-task, video-chat or even plug in anything that comes with a USB cable (which you can, provided you buy that expensive and ugly adapter, made by Apple ofcourse!)! even GPS is available only on the 3G model which is ofcourse priced in the sky! the modest-looking HP tablet running Win7 does way more stuff and is only a fraction of the cost of the ‘cheekily named’ iPad! over-hype written all over it…
It is true that Apple’s products are sometimes on the expensive side, but I find all of their products to live up to what they claim it can do, and better! All of the Apple products I’ve bought I find to be extremely good quality and run FAST. Also, I think most of their products are sleek and beautiful.
it’s an apple!!
Maybe they’ll sell you another damned proprietary-port device camera add-on like those SD card readers.
don’t bet on it,they will.Just like they did with iphone 3G and 3GS with the same iphone.I bet 4g and 4GS too are coming with the same iphone also and call it updates.
Waylo – elaborate please
I don’t see a big deal that there’s no webcam. Most people I know barely/rarely use their webcams and 90% of the time they use them from home to talk to remote relatives and friends. Does this new product need to fill every niche?
you’re an IDIOT! Ithink you drink too much apple juice and I hope you choke on an apple!
what about a button cam with conductive charging to pull directly from the devices power source. Anything that attaches to it should use conductive energy.
Has any one noticed the comment on the Apple Store Design page for the iPad that says at the bottom of the page along “There’s also a Camera Connection Kit that lets you import photos from a camera or SD card”?
yes, although import is different from take… so will the connected perifs “take” or just “import”? That is the question. :)
Are you honestly telling me that you would hold this thing up in the air to just to take a picture (with a camera that will most likely be under 4 mega-pixels)? Didn’t think so.
sure… if it takes over any other device, totally… but my main function with it would be forward facin; for voip, those instant moments (that you’d use a point and shoot for) and the like… otherwise I’ll stick to my D90 for pro shots.
@Anonymous, you dumb-ass, web cam is needed for video conferencing such as Skype.
Lol. That’s just so funny………..
Big one at that!as big as the ipad he is going to hang over his neck like a BIG clock.
This thing SUCKS… PERIOD. They let the HYPE get way out of control. They shouldn’t have ever let anyone know they were working on this POS… that way, people wouldn’t be let down by a big IPOD TOUCH. NO CAMERA, NO WRITING INPUT, NO MULTITASKING…. this is a sick joke.
Fix the IMAC I7 (and admit to it being a lemon) and update the macbook pros for god’s sake.
yeah, update the macbook pro….. geeez!
That’s why apple should change the I-pad to I-BACKLASH.
Apple didn’t let any hype “get out of control.” They didn’t tell anyone they were working on it. Apple is one of the most secretive consumer technology companies there are. People get paid to find this kind of info out, if anyone built it up too much it’s the Apple rumor industry.
Get a grip. This thing will sell well because it does what most people need, and it does it well. Not everyone needs a Core i7 processor to type a document.
Maybe try the emulator on a desktop mac without a camera and see what happens. ?
A good idea however it’s still there I have a mac pro and the ipad emulator and I noticed this even though I dot have a camera and did a quick google search to see if I was the only one.
Where can download iPad Emulator for free
It comes with the SDK http://www.apple.com/ipad/sdk/
Wow, no camera anywhere. What were they thinking. Either gross stupidity for not adding it or savvy for selling it to the dummies who will buy it (and again when they add a camera).
When are people going to educate themselves for this obvious case of planned obselecence. Even american automakers sell us cars that last for more than a year.
Apple, show us some respect. Who is keeping you from putting a camera on the front of the iphone and this Ipad……..
respect from apple? there are alot of dummies out there, believe me.As long it’s apple it’s ok.
These “dummies” make their choice to buy Apple products. It’s not illegal to create a product and upgrade it later. Apple has spent a lot of time constructing the iPad, there are well over a thousand sensors in the screen alone for multi-touch purposes, and the screen is going to be made of glass, which has a hardness of 7 and is not easily scratched.
I still don’t get to Skype on the run. On the Iphone I can only see the other person they cannot see me.
The technology is there..why wait?
Control! apple is at that!peroid.
Read and understand immediately.
Thank you.
no camera on ipad, fuck apple!!!
I’m on iPhone 3g and I have three apps that need a camera. Apps that need cam whoshere, photoswap, knocking live video to name a few that I use. Understand alot of ppl will buy this for wifi to use at home only so it should have a camera. Skype is a huge one 2.
Having a camera? Yes, it would be nice and withholding it is doing exactly what they want…complaining. People complain about Apple all the time but it doesn’t seem to affect their profit margins. In fact it’s only increasing them somehow. Think about it. First iPhone-camera but no video. 3G-STILL no video. 3GS-Video, FINALLY, and it sold like hotcakes. Now imagine there being three cameras on a future iPad. Two on the front and one on the back with the two on the front being able to create a stereoscopic image of you while video chatting. Give it time people.
People are not here to debate about the apple’s profit margins, apple have nothing to worry about that department and they know there are MANY people like you around who don’t complain but who would buy anything that have a apple logo on it.They’re talking about features. Apple did mentioned about many features to hype up the ipad.
I also believed that your home are full of apple products 1st gen iphone to 3gs(obviously all the macbooks they’ve ever produced) and you’re anxiouly waiting for the 4G (flash) and 4GS(mms) as updates for the same as in 3g and 3gs.
Looks like you’ve more money than brain. I can tell on the stupid comments you’ve made.
Btw, I stop getting fooled at iphone 3gs and now I’ve 2 iphones(3G and 3GS) doing the same thing. Would like to buy my iphones for your collections,no, I guess so, and you would rather support apple by buying new.
No Camera, No muti tasking, and probably a whole lote more no’s.
I must admit I was tempted to join the apple bandwagon with this device, until I read what it could not do.
I think I will stick with my dell netbook. A whole darn lot more useful.
And I will wait until a company with sense (like dell) incorporates all the useful features like the accelermoeter into a tablet netbook.
@John Uhm, Apple didn’t say SHIT about features for the iPad until it was released. It was the stupid rumor mills that did it.
perhaps an separately sold add-on?
I watched Steve Jobs make his presentation today and as he surfed the web on his new Pad, I noticed the little blue cube that comes up when you come across an animation that requires flash. How embarrasing for him to have this happen- but he didn’t bat an eyelid! If it is true that he is churning out mobile devices that still don’t have adobe flash capabilities he should be embarrased! Personally I was dissapointed this device is too iTouch and not enough iMac, this could have been a serious piece of kit but it’s veering towards another apple entertainment device.
Multitasking may be in the next OS release
With the launch of the iPad tablet, Apple has managed to become the ultimate digital go-between company for high quality and high price content in a small yet very affluent segment of the population … NQ Logic encourages you to check out why Apple’s iPad is the final digital puzzle for their ultimate connected consumer strategy at http://www.nqlogic.com
Writing input was what I looked forward to seeing the most. Even the name ‘iPad’ suggests it. If they had made a device that performed only as a reader, a la the Kindle, and a writing pad, it would be a lot better than what basically amounts to an expensive repackaging of the iTouch.
i have so many thouhts that i dont know where to begin. im sad that the ipad has no isight but has someone said dont put all eggs in one basket.
my tablet running xp (i know blahenus or however its spelt) can do more than the ipad and thats 4 years old IE: fingerprint req multiscreen, freewriting, flash, and a browser which take on board what ever i through at it.
my point is simple i know where the ipad is coming from due to the fact i have spent many endless nights trying to put apps from the store on my iphone then get them to my mac desktop. sure you can pull the link from the url but its not the same as having the nice app symbol on your desktop.
back to the point: take a iphone yes not itouch then turn it side ways and then make it 24 inch and put a stand on it. now thats a computer. imagine your on safari then your friend needs contacting and you just hit the touchscreen to contacts and it dials while your still looking at the apple website on safari for your next buy for the childrwn ha ha
I’m not sure if the author has any programming background, but you don’t leave stuff like this in “as a leftover from a port”. Someone had to specifically develop this menu. If they knew on beforehand that the iPad has no camera, why would you need the menu at all (you could just go to the image picker right away instead).
It’s entirely possible that internal prototypes had/have a camera, and that the menu is indeed a leftover from internal development. After all, the 3.2 SDK is still a beta.
Another possibility is that somebody didn’t do their programming job very well: check if a camera is present and only then show the menu. ;)
It’s for us to guess, and for the guys at Apple to know.
People complain about Apple all the time but it doesn’t seem to affect their profit margins. In fact it’s only increasing them somehow. Think about it. If you stop the broadcasted advert during the Oscar awards at 3rd-4th second, you’ll see the camera.
So is there a place on the net where I could bet that the iPad will have a camera when shipped this April?
