Miyamoto: Nintendo is working on new hardware

Nintendo’s next console has been the subject of countless rumors, and every time something comes up, someone at Nintendo vehemently denies it. A new console? Perish the thought! Well, I never! But at the Japan Media Arts Festival on Saturday, Shigeru Miyamoto himself said that yes, Nintendo is working on new hardware. There wasn’t much said beyond that, so it may be that it’s something totally different from, say, a Wii HD, but since we have a recent DS release, it’s safe to suppose it’s something that’s definitely new.

He was talking about the development process and some Nintendo history, and also revealed that he was working on some good stuff for MotionPlus. At some point, however, he acknowledged that the new generation of hardware was underway. I don’t trust the translation of the original article, so I’ll leave it at that.

  • I don’t get the hype behind this topic. Regardless of whether or not a company like Nintendo admits to it, of course there is new hardware underway. I would be more shocked actually if at any point in time, Nintendo *didn’t* have a R&D working on hardware. You could say the same for any major company. I’d even go as far to say that there’s always at least the smallest team working on ideas for the next platform technology even as a new one is released.

    Just a theory though.

  • Yeah, I’m with Bryan. No company gets done with a product and then says, “That went prety well. I think we’ll call it quits.”

    Duh.

  • Yeah, i also agree. It’s like all the speculation of microsoft working on windows 8 when windows 7 was released, of course they are. I dont see what the excitement is.

  • Well of COURSE they were always doing it, but this is the first time they’ve acknowledged it. Once they do that, people will start pressing them for details since they know the thing exists officially.
