Nooka is one of our favorite brands and these guys created a new way to try on a Nooka watch at home. By using augmented reality technologies – albeit technology that may not work quite yet – you can try on any watch just by putting on a specially coded bracelet. The system senses the position of your hand and lets the Nooka watch appear in 3D right on your wrist. It’s honestly an amazing idea and someone better patent it before Trojan and Victoria’s Secret get their hands on it.
We’ve seen a few of these, including Avatar toys that come to life on your screen, but never have I seen them shown in such a compelling and fascinating manner. If you were flipping through a magazine would you stop and take a photo of a little bug in the corner of the page or are you more likely to peel of a intriguing watch and go to a website to see something even cooler?
AR is finally getting to a point where the uncanny valley has finally been reached. Expect amazing things in just the next few years.

What’s that all about
yeah, i was thinking this was going to be lame when i saw the article heading, but this is actually a really cool idea.
It is basically a strip which needs to be strapped on your wrist and then go to their website and put you wrist in front of webcam and you will get lotta options to see how a real watch will look like in ur screen and then simply buy it from them.
Ray Ban has a similar Flash Application for years now.

duh…
Ace jewelers did the same thing last october already:

And FullSix did it in France… two years ago already. But it was for the happy few…

This really doesn’t have much to do with anything, but the voice over in that video is awful, sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom.
As for the service itself, that’s pretty awesome, I hope more stuff starts to go this route
This would be a really great idea for kiosks in a mall. As people walked by, the kiosk could have fliers in the shape of a watch, sunglasses, jewelry, etc. You could put these on and see yourself on a bigscreen with the actual product on you. It would be a very social experience and probably create a lot of brand awareness. Companies would probably pay big bucks to advertise this way.
We’ve done a similar Flash based app for Timex watches last year:
http://www.esta-na-hora-timex.com
And it adds gesture navigation to switch watches. :)
But it’s portuguese only.
Whoa…
True story, http://www.esta-na-hora-timex.com rulez.
You must know only 4 portuguese words:
“sim” = Yes
“avançar” = Skip
“imprimir” = Print
“abane” = Shake
That is wicked cool.
“better patent it before Trojan and Victoria’s Secret get their hands on it.”
When you said Trojan, were you meaning the condom brand?
Wow – I can’t believe this got so overhyped. It’s really not new (see comments) and once the gimickery gets old, it’s a pain to pull stuff from magazines and tie it on.
Even someone’s comment about AR in kiosks is years old.
Look at http://www.spia.net and the stuff they’ve done w/kiosks.
Hi, ya we have also done something along these lines. You can check it at http://www.talkingdogstudios.com/ar/watch . It’s a very interesting method for trying out things. Though, ya….it’s not the first group to explore it.
Interesting, not sure about the use of ‘uncanny valley’ though
