Tears of joy, my friends. Tears of joy.

If you don’t have any ROMs, there are around 100 downloadable demo movies “that provide over two full days of unique NES gameplay footage,” according to the UberNES.com website. Aside from that, installation consists of copying the Nintendo Saver.scr file into your Windows/System32 directory (yes, Windows only) and then pointing it at your ROMs directory to create a library content to pull from. You don’t need to install a separate emulator in order to play the games either.

After finally adding some drummy goodness with Guitar Hero World Tour and then issuing the video game equivalent of a greatest hits album, the newest installment of Activision’s wildly popular Guitar Hero series has hit the market.

Many may look at Guitar Hero 5 the same way people look at popular sports games like EA’s Madden series: the core game hasn’t changed that much at all but there are some new features here and there, plus 85 new songs to play and a slightly redesigned guitar controller.

Diehard fans of the series will likely go out and buy Guitar Hero 5 without much convincing, while people who are slowly (or quickly) growing weary of the near-endless crop of music games aren’t likely to find much here to change their minds. So let’s focus on those of us (myself included) in the middle – people who like music games enough to keep playing them but need some good reasons to keep shelling out $60 to $100 every other month (or so it seems).

New Features

If you’ve played any of the Guitar Hero games in the past, you’ll feel right at home with Guitar Hero 5 as the basic controls, modes, and features are largely unchanged from past iterations.

As for new stuff, though, the most welcome feature in my mind is that you can play any of the game’s 85 songs without jumping through all the Career Mode hoops first. That’s great because at this point, I’m not interested in career modes for music games any more. I’m 30 years old. Just give me the damn songs so I can RAWK OUT!

What’s more, you can now FINALLY import certain songs from Guitar Hero World Tour and Guitar Hero Smash Hits – at ten cents per song, mind you, due to licensing restrictions — and all the downloadable songs you purchased for those games are playable as well. Not all the songs are available, though, depending upon how the track is licensed. Guitar Hero World Tour has about 35 songs that can be transferred, while Guitar Hero Smash Hits has around 20 or so.

So taking the 85 songs from Guitar Hero 5 and assuming you’ll spend $5 to $6 to transfer the other songs over, you’re left with plenty to play with.

The game now also allows you and your friends to play the same instruments, if you so desire. If you’re all hell bent on singing, pick up four mics and sing away. Four drummers, no problem. Four bassists? Lame, but absolutely allowed. You can also join other players mid-song and change difficulty levels on the fly in the “Party Play” mode.

Finally, there are some new competitive game modes: Momentum, Perfectionist, Elimination, Do-or-Die, Streakers, and Pro Face Off. They can be online or in person.

The guitar controller is has technically been “redesigned,” although I didn’t find much about it different than the guitar that came with Guitar Hero World Tour. The buttons are pretty much the same, while the slider bar section has been tweaked a little bit.

Track List

I’m always hesitant to rate actual songs as it’s a totally subjective experience, but I can tell you that the track list in Guitar Hero 5 is all over the map. There’s definitely something for everyone here, but whether there’s enough of the same types of something that you actually like will be up to you. I personally don’t care for most of the songs this time around but if you’re looking to play along with friends, everybody will likely have their tastes accounted for.

The songs are all master tracks, which is nice, and the ability to import from the previous two Guitar Hero games along with the playability of previous downloaded songs is definitely a plus.

Famous Musicians

Yes, there are famous musicians this time around. Kurt Cobain has been resurrected, much to the chagrin of his late wife and loyal fans. Carlos Santana is in the game as well, along with Johnny Cash and a few other familiar faces. You can now import your own Xbox Live avatar into the game, too, so who cares about all these other famous yayhoos? You’re famous!

Presentation and Gameplay

The actual gameplay itself is pretty similar to past efforts, which is a good thing – it just works. Graphics and animation haven’t been overhauled by any means, either. If you were playing the game and someone walked into the room, they probably wouldn’t be able to tell if you were playing Guitar Hero III, World Tour, Smash Hits, or Guitar Hero 5. Activision seems to have found a tried and true formula. So again, not a whole lot of groundbreaking differences as far as the look and feel of the game is concerned, but if it ain’t broke yada, yada, yada.

Overall

You like Guitar Hero? Buy this one, especially if you like the track list. If you don’t like the track list, you can stick with World Tour or Smash Hits and not miss out all that much. If you’ve got three friends (lucky!) then the appeal is even greater as the revamped party mode and new competitive modes make the purchase more worthwhile. All in all, though, not much has changed. That’s not meant to be a criticism – it’s just that each successive release seems to be more and more about the actual music. And it’s all about the music, right?

GeckoCords are coated in a velcro like material that allows them to stick to all sorts of fabrics. When you put on your headphones, just pat the cord into place. You can go running, cook, or work safely while wearing headphones. No more running the cord down your shirt, or having your earbuds yanked out of your ear by accident. GeckoCords use tiny micro hooks, so they don’t tear or wear your favorite shirt, hoodie or jacket. GeckoCords can also be coated in an advanced molecular binding solution that allows them to stick to hard plastics, vinyl and other materials. With GeckoCords, the cord sticks to you, so you can keep enjoying your music! Stick On!

Paul – Beer Pong Hoop
The beer pong hoop, for the urban apartment beer pong experience.

Paul F – WIIPOD

The WIIPOD, white board anywhere kit. A Johnny Lee approved wii tripod and
ir pen. I think I might actually go to Radio Shack if they sold a line of
wiimote hack products. Would save me the time of building all this stuff,
usb powered wii sensor bar for the TV, the multi-touch glove, the ir
glasses.

Knowhow – Crazy Camera

The overall trend would most probably be technology integration; the
coming together of mobile technology (WLAN), digital photography,
personal computing, machine vision, artificial intelligence (AI), GPS,
laser scanning, INS, video and audio capabilities, etc. Recent
advances in handheld electronic devices support this anticipation.

The device I tried to make a prototype of! is a digital camera with
all these capabilities integrated into its design. The main purpose of
this device, apart from other obvious usages (such as mp3 player,
digital camera, portable storage system, personal video viewer, etc),
is to capture and create 3D models of the environment and store them
in different formats.

It features a laser range scanner that provides a point cloud of the
scene at the same time that it has been photographed, or simply it
could be used to measure the distance from the object. The image-based
modeling procedures would be used on the software side to improve the
accuracy of the output.

It also has a GPS receiver which provides the camera coordinates.

It has an INS device (Inertial Navigation System) which provides the
orientation of the camera and whether it is moving (in that case it
would provide position, velocity, and angular velocity as well).

It has audio and video capabilities. Perhaps a voice recognition
system would allow the user to annotate the images by just talking and
describing the scene as precisely as possible, and the built in
program would convert audio tags to text keywords which in turn would
be stored in the image metadata along with other information such as
camera field of view, coordinates (from GPS), distance from the object
(range scanner), time and date, etc.

It has a WiFi adaptor which allows the device to store the information
online, as well as searching for additional information from other
users based on the location of the device. It could search through the
internet and could find and match additional images taken by others or
text descriptions of the scene under study while the user is in the
process of capturing photographs. The result of the recording would be
instantly analyzed and would be prepared for immediate use.

This device would have a user-friendly interface that could inform the
user of areas that need more data to create a complete 3D model of the
scene/object. This data could be in forms of additional photos, text
captions, voice tags, etc.

Dooley – NBPlex

The NBplex (netbook plex) does for netbooks what the Quadroplex does for desktop rigs, but adds a much needed optical drive (Blu-ray) and easy to reach snack holder.

Let’s think about the fucking dichotomy here:

The minimalist netbook enables the convenience / small form factor compute that all business travelers / students crave.
Dedicaded deskside computing dock awaits at home or the office for when you return and need to unwind with a little World of Warcraft and a side of nuts.

Product Specs (as pictured):

ATI FirePro V7750 (different models available)
Internal Super Multi Blu-ray Disc Burner
16 oz. snack holder (nuts not included)

Disney Interactive Studios announced today that French dev Etranges Libellules has begun development of videogame adaptations of Lewis Carroll’s beloved Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass to complement Tim Burton’s upcoming film, Alice in Wonderland. The Wii, DS and PC title take place a few years after both stories in Underland and players must help Alice battle the Red Queen and Jabberwocky.

The Wii and PC titles will follow the storyline of Burton’s film while the DS version pits Alice against the Red Queen’s Army. All three titles are due out the same week as the film release. A “promo” app will be released this December with a full release for the iPhone, BlackBerry, Android and Java/Brew devices in February of 2010.

BURBANK, Calif. – (July 23, 2009) – As Tim Burton and Lewis Carroll fans become curiouser and curiouser (Carroll, 1865) about Walt Disney Pictures’ upcoming “Alice in Wonderland” film, Disney Interactive Studios today announced development of video game adaptations of the beloved story. The video games, inspired by Tim Burton’s highly anticipated film starring Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Mia Wasikowska as Alice, find Alice several years after the original “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass” stories. Alice in Wonderland for Wii™, Nintendo DS™ and Windows-based PC takes players on a topsy-turvy and immersive journey in Underland as Alice finds herself in a world of illusion and magic where nothing is quite like it seems. Alongside her endearing friends –Mad Hatter, March Hare, Cheshire Cat and White Rabbit – players aid Alice to defeat the Red Queen and Jabberwocky. Alice in Wonderland mobile games will begin launching later this year.

“These games fully capture the magnificent and whimsical world of Underland while experiencing key moments from the film,” said Craig Relyea, senior vice president of global marketing, Disney Interactive Studios. “More than just a retelling of the movie, Alice in Wonderland introduces fans to an entirely new style of innovative gameplay designed to challenge the puzzle solving skills of older players while making the adventures accessible and enjoyable for the younger crowd. Innovative gameplay and distinct artistic styles on each platform gives players a range of unique and engaging experiences.”

Alice in Wonderland allows players to guide, protect and aid Alice as she journeys through the world of Underland while unraveling the game’s many twisted mysteries. Along the way, players call on a diverse and unique cast of characters such as the Mad Hatter and Cheshire Cat who each have unique abilities to help evade traps and solve challenging puzzles. The Mad Hatter can help Alice alter her perception of Underland and take advantage of optical illusions to open up places in the world the player alone would not have noticed. Meanwhile, the Cheshire Cat can use his ability to make himself and objects appear and disappear helping Alice through this strange world. Players must choose wisely when using each of the characters’ powers and combine the abilities to solve more complex puzzles.

The Wii and PC versions follow the film’s epic storyline and introduce new fiction and locations. With an upgradeable combat system, players collect “impossible ideas” to replay levels and unlock Underland’s secrets. Players must carefully select the supporting characters and their abilities to defeat the numerous enemies set forth by the Red Queen and her army of cards, destroy the Jabberwocky and restore Underland back into Wonderland.

The Nintendo DS version will introduce a new twist as players guide Alice alongside her diverse and enduring friends to combat the legions of the Red Queen’s Army. Creating their own path through Underland using an oracle, players lead, protect and help Alice on her quest. The DS version features an innovative art style unique to the platform, a playable character not seen on the home console version, and unique character abilities similar to those of the Wii and PC versions. DSi players will use the system’s camera to detect colors mapped to unlockable content when tasks are completed. Also included in the DS version is DGamer, the online community exclusive to Disney gamers on Nintendo DS, allowing players to connect with others and unlock additional items in their DS game.

Developed by Etranges Libellules in France, Alice in Wonderland will be available for Wii, Nintendo DS and Windows-based PC with the same week as the film release in early 2010.

Disney Interactive Studios will also release iPhone and iTouch applications for the franchise. A promo application will release in December, 2009 with the full game releasing next year. Alice in Wonderland: The Mobile Game will take you on an upside-down, inside-out adventure on your phone. The whole world is a puzzle and players must twist and turn their iPhone to have Alice make it through Wonderland safely. Also available on Java/Brew, Android and RIM February 2010.

Well this is a sentence I’ve been wanting to write for some time now. There will be a third Mortal Kombat movie. So confirmed the actor who played Scorpion in both Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.

Yup, according to Chris Casamassa, filming will begin in September.

Casamassa is now 44 years old, meaning that he was a spritely 30 years old when he was fighting Johnny Cage in The Living Forest in Mortal Kombat.

Now, I haven’t seen the original movie for a few years now, but I have memories of it not being a piece of junk. That is to say I remember it being halfway decent, as far as silly action movies go.

The second movie, on the other hand, was rubbish. I knew that when I saw it in the theaters in 1997.

Finger’s crossed!

(Shame the franchise has gone to dust since 1995, though.)

I’m almost 34. I was four years old when they started working on this whisky. It took us about an hour to finish about half the bottle.

This $200 whisky from Canadian Club – you know, the guys from Canada who make blended whisky – have made some of the best stuff on earth. This is a limited edition version – 3,000 of these were made – and it’s as smooth as a slip and slide and makes you feel like a advertising executive on an expense account dinner.

The bottle we got was number 75 of 150 which made us feel special. We drank it neat at first and then we had it with a little bit of ice. It was late when we started and later when we finished. I brought the bottle to share with the dad-in-law and brother-in-law and they seemed to enjoy it as well. Johnny Walker tasted like ditchwater after this stuff. Unless we were just drunk.

Generally the 30-year is quite easy to drink. Nothing you’re familiar with appears here. Even the tones you’d expect from good whisky are undercut by this liquor, ensuring that you can sip this for a long time and never get tired of the taste.

Because it’s a limited edition it’s a bit expensive. However, I would pay $200 for this bottle, especially for a special occasion or as a gift for a father-in-law. Being able to one-up your buddies on poker night with an 18-year whisky is one thing. Being able to offer a little bit of history is entirely another.

Bottom Line: Try it if you can find it.

Gamers rejoice! No longer will you need to make that painful decision of whether to skimp on power in order to get a small form factor PC you can easily transport to your next LAN party, or whether you risk a hernia lugging your tricked out full tower desktop. NZXT’s new Panzerbox is an all-aluminum mid-size case that’s 25% smaller and 50% lighter than similar products with high airflow and ATX expandability.

The Panzerbox sports “full expandability with room for high performance 10.5″ cards, 4 hard drives, 3 5.25″ drive bays, and oversized heatsinks”. And the slide-out tray for the mainboard should make compulsive upgraders very happy. At 120 clams, this is case to consider.

Here’s the whole press release.

El Monte, CA – March 19, 2009 – NZXT, a company built on realizing the dreams of gamers worldwide, is proud to announce the Panzerbox, a mid-tower that offers the extreme performance of a full-tower case due to its unique design. Panzerbox features the best airflow in its class, boasting two 190mm and one 120mm fans that churn out a combined 300 CFM. The Panzerbox’s pure aluminum design makes it a light and luxurious option for travel and LAN parties and the welded chassis enhances strength and support. Dual radiator support and full expandability with room for high performance 10.5” cards, 4 hard drives, 3 5.25” drive bays, and oversized heatsinks offer gamers and enthusiasts even more options to increase performance while a removable
motherboard tray makes upgrades easy and painless.

“Panzerbox gives gamers the capability and power of a full-size tower in a much smaller and convenient form factor” said Johnny Hou, Chief Designer at NZXT. “We’ve leveraged our many years of experience in case design and the ongoing feedback we receive from the enthusiast community to develop a chassis that lends itself well to easy transport without compromising on performance.”

Retailing for $119.99 the new Panzerbox case will be available in late April. For more information on the NZXT Panzerbox visit www.nzxt.com/products/panzerbox

In one sense, this is basically a proof of concept but why isn’t Apple jumping on this? Turn-by-turn would make the iPhone absolutely perfect for driving. Speaking from experience, I’m surprised Apple hasn’t gotten sued for offering driving directions that require you to look away from the road to pop over to the next waypoint.

I happened by the Roland booth today at CES and watched as freehand technique guru Johnny Rabb held a wooden stick in each hand and used said sticks to delicately berate a Roland TD-20S drum set. Roland’s got a pretty cool setup that allows for other drummers to play along with Rabb on a consumer-friendly HD-1 all-in-one kit. The other drummers could hear themselves and Rabb, but spectators could only hear Rabb – probably a good thing.

Anyway, here’s five minutes of controlled mayhem. Enjoy…

Today, December 5th, is the annual Day of the Ninja, according to Google (and ninjas everywhere). While I’m personally familiar with the concepts of both ninjas and pirates, I must admit that I’ve not been involved in the intriguing and hotly-contested Pirates versus Ninjas debate. I have equal respect for (and fear of) both, though.

I’m also confident that people on either side of the debate would be able to make a strong case for their favorite warrior, but let’s attempt to break things down piece by piece from an outsider’s point of view. We’ll take a look at these eight categories:

Intimidation Factor, Most Elusive, Best Work Environment, Best for Society, Public Relations Efforts, Physical Fitness, Sex Appeal, and Weapons.

Intimidation Factor: Pirates

Pirates show up in large numbers, slowly creeping up to your boat from their often-bigger boat. They’re almost always ragged, aggressive, and bloodthirsty. A ninja would be really intimidating if he dropped down behind you in a dark alley and he let you look at him for a minute, but anyone that’s been killed by a ninja probably didn’t see it coming. Death-by-pirate would likely be much more painful and slow.

Plus, just think about it from the viewpoint of a normal, upstanding citizen. You see a ninja on the street and you’d be like, “Oh, cool, a ninja. Wonder who he’s about to assassinate. I can’t believe I just saw a ninja!” Whereas if you saw a pirate on the streets (or the high seas), you’d be like, “Oh shit, how do I casually stuff my wallet in my pants without drawing attention to myself? I can’t believe this is happening!”

Most Elusive: Ninjas

Hands down, no contest. Ninjas wear slippers, pirates wear boots. Most pirates have a wooden leg, too. And it’s hard to hide a giant sailboat. Plus, if needed, a ninja could put on a tuxedo and scope out a dinner party without alerting any suspicion. Try that with a pirate; it’d be like inviting Dog the Bounty Hunter to a wedding on Cape Cod.

Best Work Environment: Tie

Sure, you can get scurvy and most of the time you’re surrounded by dudes but the ability to wear your own clothes, the on-the-job drinking, and the massive bonus potential (via stolen loot) make the pirate’s life a good one.

Overall, Ninjas have a safer work environment and mandatory daily exercise programs combined with a healthy, far-east diet made mostly of lean proteins, veggies, and rice ensure that ninjas remain in peak physical condition. Plus, little to no seafaring.

So pirates for fun, ninjas for longevity.

Best for Society: Ninjas

Ninjas generally don’t attack regular, everyday people unless provoked, although there was quite a scare during the late 80s and early 90s in and around Manhattan as one Oroku Saki, also known as “Shredder,” led an army of ill-behaved ninjas known as the “Foot Clan” in a series of thefts, vandalism, and physical attacks against innocent New Yorkers. Thanks to policies later enacted by former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, ninja activity, along with adult entertainment, has been scarce in Manhattan.

Despite the aforementioned New York Ninja Scare, attacks against innocent people by ninjas don’t hold a candle to pirate activity – most of which includes direct attacks on innocent civilians, merchants, and, occasionally, other pirates.

Public Relations Efforts: Pirates

The Pirate Council has done a great job of handling PR. Clearly plenty of booty is being funneled back into the Pirate’s Union, which pirates have been able to leverage into popular films – most notably, The Pirates of the Caribbean series, starring Johnny Depp. Ask any small child if they can name a famous pirate, and you’ll likely hear “Jack Sparrow!” or “Davy Jones!” to name a few.

While the success of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and Ninja Gaiden franchises are still able to maintain a decent following, pirates are all the rage right now. That being said, real-life Somali pirates aren’t helping the overall pirate cause much as they’ve been stealing the televisions and DVD players used to watch pirate movies. Luckily, that’s been somewhat balanced with the success of The Pirate Bay. Sure, all of our electronics are getting stolen, but at least there’s free stuff to download, right?

Still, ninjas need a comeback, preferably in the form of a good movie series – since Hollywood hasn’t made anything new in a few decades, I might suggest a remake of the American Ninja series, perhaps taking place in current-day war zones.

Physical Fitness: Ninjas

Again, the healthy diet, daily exercise, and abstinence from smoking, drugs, and alcohol keep ninjas in peak physical condition. I know there’s an argument about who would win in a fight – ninjas or pirates – but for one on one combat, it’s gotta be ninjas all the way. I’ll take a healthy, non-smoking, well-rested ninja against a hung over, wheezing, been-out-at-sea-for-months-with-no-cardio-training pirate any day.

Now, a single ninja – if we assume for the sake of argument that most ninjas work alone – against a boat full of pirates would be different. A ninja could likely perform silent kills on a fair amount of sleeping pirates but, if discovered, a group of pirates on their own boat would almost surely be able to defeat a single ninja.

Sex Appeal: Pirates

Sure there’s something about ninjas: the mysterious, strong, silent-type is appealing to some, but no ninja’s gonna get involved in any sort of relationship, serious or otherwise. Pirates, on the other hand, while also not keen on getting roped into, say, marriage, at least keep up with a few female “friends” in each port and like to throw down, get drunk, and have a sexy old time whenever they hit land.

Weapons: Ninjas

Ninjas have throwing stars, nunchucks, katana swords, and smoke bombs, to name a very small selection of concealable and semi-concealable items. Pirates have guns, sabers, cannons, and the plank. You can’t overlook the awesome brute force of a pirate attack, but you’ve gotta hand it to ninjas for creativity and originality. There are literally 99 ways to die at the hands of a ninja, but maybe only ten ways by pirate.

Overall: Ninjas (by a shuriken)

Ninjas eke out a close victory after an impressive showing by both sides. Perhaps the image of pirates has grown somewhat soft in popular culture, while ninjas remain mysterious, silent killing machines “specially trained in a variety of unorthodox arts of war” that, thankfully, pretty much leave regular people alone unless provoked.

While the slight nod goes to ninjas, I’d like to reiterate that in no way would I relish a confrontation with either a pirate or a ninja (I would, however, have coffee with a ninja). Both are formidable fighters and should only be viewed from afar, if at all.

Dan Houser, the face of Rockstar these days, told USA Today that the expansion will star a guy named Johnny, who is a “very different character” than Niko. No story details were released, not that many of you play the game for the story (I do, but I’m crazy), but he did admit that we’d see Liberty City from a different perspective.

No details about the PS3 DLC were announced.

Oh, kids. If you’re going to play your shiny new Death Knight for 15 hours in a row, you’d better make sure to prepare yourself, mentally and physically, for the experience. A 15-year-old in the Netherlands didn’t, and he ended up in the hospital.

The kid, a boy (no surprise there), had played Wrath of the Lich King for 15 straight hours at the weekend. On top of getting only two hours sleep the previous night, the boy barely ate anything at all. Not smart. As such, the boy’s parents are warning everyone: don’t let this happen to you or your child.

Never you mind that millions of people were playing the game for as long, if not longer, with no ill effects. For example, I played the game on Saturday from around 10:00 a.m. until around midnight, a solid 14 hours. Sad, yes. The difference is that I stopped around lunchtime and had a delicious meal of sushi and water. I may live a sedentary lifestyle, especially now as I race toward level 80, but there’s no reason to gorge on chips and other junk food while doing so.

In conclusion, don’t forget to eat and sleep; in-game food and water won’t sustain you, the person behind the keyboard.

Nope, not the first time that McFarlane has made figures based on video games. For example, there’s those Halo Wars figures that are on the way. Shame that the core Halo audience wouldn’t know an RTS if it hit them in the face, but that’s neither here nor there.

Mr. Mitnick explains (in excruciating detail) what happened to him while he was detained. Pretty interesting, especially if you’re familiar with all the guys on the show.

Lesson to take away: you’re not required to reveal your laptop’s password to security agents. Of course, 99 percent of us will, because who wants to upset Johnny Law?

That’s right. Christopher Nolan wants 62-year-old Cher to play Catwoman in “The Caped Crusader”, which begins filming in Vancouver next year. I really wish they would recast for the Riddler. I like Johnny Depp, but I think David Tennant would be so much better. Also worth noting is this blurb from a studio exec.

“Cher is Nolan’s first choice to play Catwoman. He wants to her to portray her like a vamp in her twilight years.
