And where was EA Sports’ UFC prediction? Oh, that’s right: it told Dana White to take a hike when he approached them about making a UFC video game back in the day. Smart move, EA.

I know something about MMA, but I know next to nothing about boxing. I laugh because saying Pacquiao will win the fight is like saying the sun will rise in the morning. (Now watch Cotto knock out Pacquiao in the first.)

This is just the latest simulation that EA Sports has run with its games. The most recent one, that the Philadelphia Phillies would beat the New York Yankees in seven games didn’t exactly pan out.

EA Sports has also predicted that the Cleveland Cavaliers will win the NBA Finals this year, and that the Pittsburgh Penguins will win the Stanley Cup.

Did EA Sports already do a UEFA Champions League prediction yet? (I imagine after the seeding we’ll see a FIFA World Cup prediction.)

And now we play the waiting game.

Consider this a friendly reminder. Tonight at 9pm ET on CBS (in the U.S.; I’m sure there will be plenty of streams, though, which you can find on your own) two of the big stars from EA’s upcoming EA Sports MMA video game will hit each other very hard. Fedor Emelianenko, the big Russian guy who could well be the best MMA fighter of all time (or is that Sakuraba?), will fight Brett Rogers, of whom I know nothing.

There’s actual a reasonably interesting story vis-à–vis video games and mixed martial arts. A few years ago, UFC approached EA with the idea of making a video game. UFC declined, saying that it didn’t consider MMA to be a real sport, which, let’s just say, really upset UFC president Dana White.

UFC later signed a deal with THQ to make the video game, which has been both a critical and commercial success.

The success of THQ’s game is said to have sparked EA’s interest in making its own MMA game. EA then started signing fighters to a deal, before announcing that Strikeforce would be the game’s main promotion.

So yeah, I’ll be watching Fedor tear apart Rogers tonight. If only it were easier to place bets online from the U.S!

I am spending the day watching old Fedor fights, courtesy of alt.binaries.mma. Hopefully Mr. Emelianenko comes out to that Era song again, and not some generic rock nonsense.

The beauty of this post is that maybe six of you have any idea of what I’m talking about.

Strikeforce (UFC’s closest competitor here in the U.S.) promotes one of the bigger fights of the year tomorrow in Fedor vs. Brett Rogers. It takes place in Chicago, which explains why EA Sports just held a press conference there to reveal more details of its upcoming MMA game, entitled EA Sports MMA. EA Sports says that Strikeforce will be the “premier” mixed martial arts league in the game, and that well-known referee “Big” John McCarthy will be in the game.

The game, which is due out for the Xbox 360 and PS3 next year, will, as such, feature Brett Rogers and other Strikeforce fighters.

In-game commentary will be provided by Frank Shamrock and Mauro Ranallo. I haven’t played an EA Sports game in three years, so I have no idea who good the commentary is these days.

Other fighters confirmed to be in the game include current UFC star Randy Couture, Gegard Mousasi, Renato Sobral, and Cung Le. (Check Wikipediafor the full list of confirmed and rumored fighters. Hopefully Alistair Overeem makes the cut. You’d think he would, being that he’s the Strikeforce heavyweight champion, even if he hasn’t defended the belt in two years.)

Presumably EA Sports MMA will now be colloquially referred to as “the Strikeforce game.” Hopefully EA can work in plenty of Dream fighters, as well as the Dream arenas.

Oh, the first trailer of the game will debut during tomorrow night’s Strikeforce show that airs on CBS at 9pm. And if you’re interested in a little backstory, check out Showtime’s 30-minute documentary on both Fedor and Rogers. Fun stuff.

10:52 AM: John Biggs How is the stream?

10:53 AM: DannyD Ustream is great, but it is just so choppy. I´m from Germany and the stream is interrupted about every other second… is it my Connection or the iPhone`s that is “crap”

10:53 AM: Kirill Just wanted to say thanks for doing this guys.

11:22 AM: John Biggs No idea re live stream and we are this early for you guys

11:36 AM: John Biggs

11:36 AM: John Biggs There is the new QuickTime Logo.

11:37 AM: John Biggs

11:38 AM: John Biggs the old logo

11:38 AM: John Biggs

11:38 AM: John Biggs new one

11:40 AM: mapplemike Can’t wait to see what they say at WWDC. Apple employees are the biggest junkies of them all.

11:40 AM: bgertzfield According to the weirdo walking the WWDC line, I am male number 776. The nice lady behind me is female number 43!

11:40 AM: John Biggs Hey guys – we’re outside the keynote room right now w/ folks from Phonescoop, Laptop, Engadget; everyone’s here. Sorry the live feed went down, not a whole lot we can do about that.

11:41 AM: John Biggs Vincent Nguyen just took a horrible picture of me, as I thought it was video. Thanks, Vincent.

11:42 AM: Monik (etiole.com) why has the video gone off air?

11:42 AM: John Biggs Limited WiFi, No 3G. Simply not enough bandwidth. Plus – they’ll eat our face if we stream inside.

11:48 AM: John Biggs We’ve got power! Power is rare here. It’s like soil in waterworld.

11:49 AM: John Biggs We’re about 90% sure there’s no power inside. There *does* seem to be WiFi – which is incredible. Great chance that the WiFi will die as soon as we get inside, be it by apple’s doing or the weight of a million geeks all trying their damnedest to liveblog

11:51 AM: John Biggs

11:51 AM: John Biggs I wish John Biggs would hold my laptop for me while I typed:-(

11:52 AM: John Biggs Apple store is down. Everybody panic!

11:54 AM: John Biggs We’re still in line. The mood is generally light, everyone’s drinkin’ the Odwallas and eatin’ the scones Apple provided. If you need something to do, go prep your bingo cards: www.crunchgear.com

11:56 AM: Greg Kumparak The past 10 liveblog snippets have all been a lie. I didnt realize I was logged in as Biggs.

11:59 AM: Greg Kumparak Surprisingly, the room doesn’t smell too bad yet. It is a big room, though.

12:00 PM: Greg Kumparak

12:00 PM: Greg Kumparak There are probably around 150 media folk waiting outside the keynote room. There’s no obvious line. There never is, really. It’s just a big pile of madness.

12:01 PM: Greg Kumparak If you missed it in the earlier live broadcast, the first line dwellers had been here since 3 am.

12:02 PM: @michaelowens The first person in line got there at 5:30p the night before, actually.

12:02 PM: Greg Kumparak Yeesh. Missed’em. Way to go, 5:30pm trooper. Hope you enjoy the show.

12:04 PM: @iAppTime So will you be recording the keynote live on the Ustream?

12:05 PM: Greg Kumparak Unfortunately not; Apple nixed that from the start, and reiterated that it was disallowed when we were getting our badges.

12:13 PM: Greg Kumparak Looks like broadcast guys get to go in first, then the rest of media, then general WWDC goers.

12:13 PM: Dip Greg are people out there betting on Steve Jobs making an appearance?

12:14 PM: Greg Kumparak Lots of debates about that, as is to be expected.

12:15 PM: Greg Kumparak It seems like at least 50% of the people here are sick. Awesome.

12:16 PM: Jim No video but live blog will continue right?

12:17 PM: Greg Kumparak Absolutely – as long as we can keep a connection up, we’ll keep updating the feed.

12:17 PM: Greg Kumparak Besides the new looking Quicktime logo, we’re not noticing anything too surprising on the banners.

12:18 PM: Greg Kumparak Mentions of 64 bit stuff alongside snow leopard, an OpenOCL logo

12:20 PM: Dip Wonder how many people out there in Moscone are carrying the “pre”? Do you see any among those who are near you?

12:20 PM: Greg Kumparak Its only media around us, so it’s a Pre/iPhone bananza.

12:24 PM: Greg Kumparak If you’re wondering, it’s starting to smell horrible.

12:25 PM: Greg Kumparak Everyone’s starting to get cranky.

12:27 PM: Greg Kumparak

12:27 PM: Greg Kumparak That logo to the lower left of “Mac” – we’re not familiar with it. Anyone ever seen it?

12:27 PM: Greg Kumparak It reads “GCD”, and looks like a stoplight.

12:28 PM: Ender is it the new OSX Grand Central?

12:28 PM: Tim “Getting Crap Done”… must be an Apple implementation of the GTD.

12:29 PM: Capt Crunch What happens when a bunch of Apple fanboys get cranky?

Cut, Copy, Paste: Works across apps, undo support, developer APIs.

MMS: Support for sending Photos, contacts, audio files, etc over the cell network. 24 carriers will support iphone MMS at launch.

Search: Search throughout contacts, calendars, notes, email, etc. “The great part about searching your email:” not just local messages, but messages that are back on your mail server. In other words: One-page searches across the phone.

iTunes: Movie rentals/purchases from the iPhone are confirmed. You can also purchase tv shows/audio books/etc on the go. “And because we care deeply about education: Support for iTunes U, right on the phone.”

Parental Controls: In addition to controls we already support, such as youtube/safari support, we’ve added other items: You can now filter by movie/tv-show content via parental controls. You can now limit app usage by age ratings.

Tethering: Tethering works w/ Mac/PC, USB or Bluetooth. “It is a seamless experience – once it’s on, there’s no need for tethering software on your computer.” “Like MMS, it requires carrier support. 22 carriers at launch. Telefonica, TIM, Rogers, more.” Doesn’t look like AT&T will support tethering.

Safari Mobile: Javascript is now 3x faster. Support for HTTP streaming audio/video. It automatically picks the proper quality based off your connection. And works through firewalls, as it’s HTTP>. Safari can now autofill forms for you based on what’s in your contacts. Safari 4 recap: Performance upgrades, HTTP streaming, Auto fill, HTML 5.

New language support in OS 3.0: Hebrew, Arabic, Greek, Korean, and Thai. The iPhone now supports over 30 languages.

Find My iPhone: As MobileMe service if your iPhone is ever lost FMI will show you where it is on a map by sending your phone a message via landline. An alert sound plays whether phone is on silent or not. Send remote wipe command if it’s lost or stolen.

In App Purchases: Renew magazine subscriptions. Sell additional game packs in games. Free apps remain free. No bait and switch.

Accessories: Software apps that talk right to accessories, like the 1-touch-blood glucose monitor. Apple has really opened up to third-party accessory manufacturers.

Maps: Embed Google maps right into your applications. Custom map apps. Turn by turn direction applications.

Push notifications: Generic push notification service. Push numeric badges, messages, and alert sounds.

3.0 release date: Woohoo! I should probably take my borked iPhone 3G into the Apple store before June 17th so I can get my free upgrade to 3.0. The OS upgrade will be free for iPhone and iPhone 3G owners. As always, Touch owners will have to pony up $10.

It was only a few weeks back when Nokia announced that a model of the E63 with North American 3G friendly internals was on the way, and it’s already found its way to the shelves. While it doesn’t appear that Nokia has gotten around to putting it online yet, the flagship Nokia stores in Chicago and New York are reporting that they just received their first shipment and are letting them go for $279.99 a piece.

The North American model packs in quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900 Mhz) and UMTS (850/1900mhz), so it should fire right up on AT&T’s (or, if you’re a bit further up north, Rogers) 3G network. Besides the radio change, it matches spec-for-spec with the international version Nokia launched a few months ago, which is in turn a lighter-spec’d and easier-on-the-wallet homage to the E71.

The E63 comes in blue and red, and we’re not sure which is in stock – so make sure to call ahead if you’ve got a particular hue in mind.

I take a generally pessimistic view of new sites, assuming that I’ll either not like them, or they won’t stick around long enough for me to appreciate them. I have a few friends who are compulsive signer-uppers, gladly agreeing to the Terms of Service for any new site that comes along. One of these guys does it specifically so he can claim his preferred username, lest some other Internet a-hole tarnish his good handle. Another friend signs up for stuff with the expectation that he’ll actually use the service being offered. Sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn’t.

The folks who sign up early — the aptly named early adopters — often enjoy a number of benefits to using new sites and services. Capacity isn’t usually an issue, so the services work well. There’s a sense of satisfaction as you enjoy something no one else is currently enjoying. You get to look smart and in-the-know as you talk about it to all your Luddite friends. There’s the obvious novelty factors. And sometimes, the sites and services are genuinely useful!

One thing I’ve noticed about early adopters is that they seem complacent with the knowledge that all their time and effort may soon be obviated as the sites to which they sign up disappear. These folks will sign up for a site and really start using it. Take, for example , Grand Central, Google’s unified phone solution. I know several folks who absolutely rely on Grand Central. They jumped in whole hog, and live and die by Grand Central. Of course, Google could terminate Grand Central tomorrow if they wanted to, literally stranding many of the early adopters that really rely on the service. I’d wager that a great many of these early adopters would be frustrated with the disappearance of the service, but would in short order find alternatives to reproduce the lost functionality.

The late adopters, and the laggards, seem to place a higher value on the longevity of their effort, and are less likely to sign up for some new site or service (assuming they hear about it at all) without some assurance that their effort won’t be wasted on a fly-by-night operation. Some folks like to wait to see which of several competing solutions will emerge as the dominant choice. How many folks waited to buy Flickr accounts as they kept an eye on Zooomr, and whatever other photo sharing sites cropped up to compete? Other late adopters sign up only when some critical mass of their peers sign up for something. How useful would Facebook or Twitter really be if you were the only person you knew using it?

I wonder, though, how many early adopters actually stick with something? Are the early adopters compulsive about using new sites and services? Is it some how beneath them to use something that is suddenly mainstream? Another interesting thing to consider is how many early adopters are willing to pay for services that were free before they got big? Take for example Jott, the voice-to-text messaging system that recently started charging $4 a month for what had previously been free. I know a guy who used the free Jott a lot, but decided he’s not using $4 a month worth. Just like that, he’s stopped using the service, and is investigating a number of alternatives.

So the question I have for you, dear readers, is this: how can sites, services, and products remain relevant to the broad spectrum of users? Is it worth it to try to keep early adopters as a deluge of late adopters and laggards start using your solution? Can you adequately reward early adopters, or is early adoption reward enough? Is it worthwhile to actively seek out early adopters, or is that more trouble than its worth since they’re such a fickle and unreliable bunch?

According to BlackBerryRocks, the 8900 will be priced accordingly:

No Contract: $499

2-year contract: $199.99 (After $300 instant rebate)

1-year contract: $249.99 (After $250 instant rebate)

While these prices are said to only reflect pricing for corporate customers, they should be pretty dead-on for the general public outside though the 1-year contract option might not be offered.

TiVo just updated their search functionality so it’s all shiny and new. It’s basically a UI redesign with a bit more oomph. They’ve essentially appeased the HDTV crowd with album cover-type artwork and suggested content based on what you’re searching for. It also eliminates the nuisance of having to drill down through the menus to see what’s going on. TiVo Series3, TiVo HD, and HD XL subscribers are privy to the Beta starting today. I don’t use a TiVo myself, but I know a few of the fellas on staff do and I’m sure they’re happy about this announcement. Are you?

LAS VEGAS, NV. January 7, 2009 —TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO), the creator of and a leader in television services for digital video recorders (DVRs), today showed the future of television, unveiling a redesigned TiVo Search feature that offers improved search results with a completely new High Definition design, all at no additional charge. TiVo Search brings users the power of choice, offering millions of pieces of content not available via cable or satellite, along with thousands of linear TV choices. Delivered via broadband, TiVo Search combines a graphics rich experience with simplicity and relevancy that makes it a truly revolutionary way to get more out of your TV.

“What Google did for the Internet, TiVo is now doing for the TV, bringing people a combination of excellent search results and innovative discovery that can’t be found anywhere else,” said Tom Rogers, CEO and President of TiVo Inc. “TiVo has always been known as the best way to watch what you want, when you want it. Now we’re taking that to a new level, using TiVo technology to find just the right program from hundreds of channels and thousands of broadband options, all in seconds. It is clear TiVo is leading the way in providing more choice, and also leading the way in finding content quickly. TiVo Search is a new way to find what you’ve been missing.”

TiVo Search takes advantage of extra screen size afforded by high definition televisions by showing more details about a highlighted program than ever before, eliminating the need to dig down into each and every program to learn what it is about. It ensures the most important information is surfaced right up to the screen you’re already on, equaling less navigation and quick, accurate results.

“One of the best things about the new TiVo Search feature is how it works as a discovery engine, helping users find content they didn’t even know they could get,” said Jim Denney, Vice President of Product Marketing at TiVo Inc. “We’ve added a new discovery bar that gives a quick guide to relevant content, and the search experience incorporates content from broadband sources like Amazon Video on Demand and YouTube. The newly tuned search engine also displays the most popular search results of the day automatically, even when typing only a single letter. Searches work not with just the first word of a title, but any word of the program, which is especially handy when looking for programs with specific search words.”

The new interface not only displays in high definition, it has a focus on finding high definition television content. TiVo search automatically recommends high definition television channels and episodes when users schedule a program to record. Additionally, users can now browse shows season by season and select any episode they want utilizing a robust episode guide. Depending on availability users may record content from cable/antenna, download it from Amazon Video on Demand, or use WishList searches to record it the next time the content is broadcast.

Seeing equals believing, and the new TiVo Search is no exception. Starting today broadband connected TiVo Series3, TiVo HD, and HD XL subscribers can experience a beta version of the feature on their TiVo DVR, which can be found under Music, Photos, and Showcases. For an online preview and to provide your comments and feedback on this new search tool to TiVo visit www.tivo.com/tivosearch.

After some many months in the works, the BlackBerry 8900 (otherwise known as “Javelin”) has finally made its way out of the labs and onto a shelf near you. Well, by “a shelf near you” we mean “on a shelf at Rogers locations in Canada”. Not, say, the shelf in your bathroom.

Essentially a BlackBerry Bold Lite, the Javelin’s missing 3G, and has a slightly smaller keyboard, slower processor, and a bit less boom in the speaker department. It’s not all a downgrade, however; the screen is slightly higher-res (480×360 vs 480×320), and the camera has been bumped from 2-megapixels to 3.2. If you’re looking to pinch some pennies (though only about $20 bucks worth) on a Bold and don’t mind being stuck with GSM/EDGE, the Javelin should do you well. Expect to walk out the door with one for $179.99 on a 3-year contract.

Well. Ars Technica is calling bull based on some holes in the story.

this story, or any announcement regarding a netbook, was not (emphasis theirs) initiated, condoned, or approved by Coby Electronics.

The story does seem to be too good to be true. $100 netbook, built using cheap Chinese tech. The D3x will have a FX-format, 24.5MP sensor that will shot 5fps at full resolution or 7fps at 10MP. The basic functions of the D3 remain but reportable there has been some ISO tweaks.

It doesn’t matter if these details were intentionally announced or not, the D3x has been outed. Now all we need is a price and launch date.

Update: More pictures, many more specs here at Nikon Rumors.

TIVO AND NETFLIX ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP
TO INSTANTLY STREAM MOVIES AND TV EPISODES
FROM NETFLIX DIRECTLY TO THE TV THROUGH TIVO DVRs

Deal Provides Netflix with New Content Distribution Channel, Solidifies TiVo’s Leading Position as One-Box Solution for Simple Navigation and Delivery
Of the Best Entertainment Content to the TV

ALVISO, Calif. and LOS GATOS, Calif., October 30, 2008 — TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO), the creator of and a leader in television services for digital video recorders (DVRs) and Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX), the world’s largest online movie rental service, today announced that they are teaming up to provide Netflix and TiVo® Series3, TiVo HD, and TiVo HD XL subscribers with the ability to have thousands of movies and TV episodes instantly streamed from Netflix directly to their TVs.

The two companies said they are initiating a test of the new capability today in several thousand U.S. households and expect it to be broadly available in early December, in time for the holidays. The ability to instantly watch content from Netflix on the TV via TiVo DVRs will be offered at no additional charge to customers who subscribe to both services.

The agreement provides Netflix with an important new technology partner to instantly stream a growing library of more than 12,000 choices of movies and TV episodes directly from Netflix to the TV. It also solidifies TiVo’s leading position for simple navigation and delivery of the best entertainment content to the TV.

“For Netflix and TiVo subscribers, this collaboration offers a fabulously easy way to enhance the enjoyment of watching movies in the comfort of their living rooms,” said Reed Hastings, co-founder and CEO of Netflix. “Subscribers to Netflix and TiVo are avid movie watchers and this combination gives them immediate access to all of the great content available through TiVo and the thousands of additional choices available to be streamed instantly from Netflix.”

“Joining forces with Netflix creates the ultimate video on demand service and solidifies TiVo’s leading position as the one-box solution for aggregating, searching, and delivering the best content available anywhere right to the TV,” said Tom Rogers, president and CEO of TiVo Inc. “Adding Netflix to our already vast library of content differentiates TiVo even further from any other offering in the market today.”

Integrating the Netflix streaming functionality into the TiVo experience will result in quick and easy access to a growing list of movies and TV episodes that can be watched instantly at Netflix. Movies streamed from Netflix via specified TiVo DVRs is done through a wired or wireless broadband connection and a Netflix Queue-based user interface. Members visit the Netflix Web site to add movies and TV episodes to their individual instant Queues. Those choices will automatically be displayed on subscribers’ TVs and available to watch instantly through the TiVo service. With the TiVo remote control, users will be able to browse their instant Queue, make selections right on the TV screen, and also have the ability to read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they will have the option of pausing, fast-forwarding, rewinding and re-starting whenever they wish.

As we learned today, ASUS is releasing a Skype videophone that brings the 25th century to the comfort of your home. The device has a full color camera and mini-screen and brings up your Skype contacts for immediate video calling without a PC. This is basically the best thing ever for grandmothers, mothers, and whoever else you might want to video chat with and who is unable, for whatever reason, to press the green button on Skype to make a call.

No pricing, but it seems that they’re going to release this in October and we’re pretty darned excited. Seriously. This is video calling, just like in Buck Rogers.
