A quick glance at the Casio EX-G1 doesn’t revel that the camera is a rugged-type model. It’s just too good looking. But then you might start to notice that the dials are recessed and reinforced and the case seems like it could work underwater. (it can) It’s just that Casio managed to out a 12.1 MP ruggedized camera that’s actually a looker.

The camera’s equipped with all the standard modern conveniences too. It sports a 12.1 MP sensor, a 960 x 240 2.5-inch reinforced LCD, a 3x zoom, and microSDHC storage. But more importantly the camera is shockproof, dustproof, freezeproof and waterproof up to 10 feet for 60 minutes, which makes it an awesome option for those that enjoy beaches, snowbording, and surfing. (not me) The EX-G1 should be out for $300 in December and available in both red and black.

Warm Up
Everyone knows that sex is all about foreplay. (Guys, we know this, right?) Rather than going zero to 60 in ten minutes, incorporate some fun winter toys to get you and your partner in the mood.

Massage Oil Heater
Channel your inner 70’s porn star with the Pure Gel Bottle Warmer and avoid a “this is going to be cold” Dr.’s office moment. This baby even warms multiple bottles so you can bust out different flavored lubes or massage oils based on your beau’s preferences.

Philips Warm Sensual Massager
If your date didn’t run screaming when he or she saw the heated oil contraption, it’s fair game to whip out the Philips Warm Sensual Massager for him or her. Even if it seems lame, there’s nothing that gets you in the mood more than a massage. Hands down. What makes this vibrating massager different is the fact that it heats up and is specifically designed for couples use. It even comes with some cheesetastic LED candles for “setting the mood.” Hot.

The Main Event
When you’re ready for the main event, trust these toys to keep your session extra hot.

Durex Play Warming Lube
The winter is the perfect time for some heated lube. Durex Play Warming Lube is designed to heat up with your own body temperature and get hotter with contact to heighten sensation. This lube is something that your lady will primarily feel, but don’t worry guys you will feel it too, like warm apple pie. Thankfully, it’s completely edible and the heat intensifies when you blow on it. Some people may complain that it’s too hot, but I say if you can’t handle the heat, get out of the kitchen!

The Hot Rod Heated Vibrator
No matter how realistic your vibrator may be, the one thing that’s always missing is the sensation of body heat that you get from a partner –Sigh- Thank you Hot Rod Heated Vibrator for providing us with a heated vibrator complete with realistic skin sleeve that makes using it comparable to the real thing. You really never need a date again.

Vibrating Heated Nipple Clamps
For the truly daring, give these Vibrating Heated Nipples Clamps a try. Apparently nipple clamps are designed for men or women to stimulate your nipples, leaving your hands free to do other things. Will the vibration and sensation be enough to keep your headlights beaming and warm?! Give it a try and see.

Cool Down & Clean Up
If the pre-show and main event left you feeling dirty, jump in the shower for some post game clean up. Because what’s better than a warm hot shower on a cold winter day…

Suction Cup Shower Handcuffs
These Suction Cup Shower Handcuffs offer couples that dominatrix moment in the tub or shower. The cuffs are made of sturdy neoprene and Velcro with industrial strength suction cups that can easily adhere to a shower door or wall tiles. What flat surface you attach them to out of the shower is none of our business.

Vibrating Sponge
Because obviously a regular loofa isn’t going to suffice this winter, grab a vibrating sponge to surprise your extra dirty lover. This vibrating sponge looks and feels like a normal sponge, but is sooo much more. Waterproof with a bullet vibrator hidden deep within, the sponge even has a hand strap for maximum control. Soap up and get dirty! This device is also a great if your love making session didn’t quite do it and you need to step away for some much needed alone time.

The One Laptop Per Child project has seen mixed success. With competition from similar, but more familiar-looking items from Intel and others, the OLPC found itself suddenly competing in a market it had no intention of entering. But they’re out there, they’ve had some serious orders, and despite some other speed bumps, has certainly lent a hand in increasing computer literacy in the developing world.

You may remember that the sequel to the XO laptop, as the OLPC hardware was actually called, was spied at Davos in January after its initial debut in May of 2008. It was noted at the time that there was some doubt as to whether it would be made, and now those doubts have come to glorious anti-fruition. The XO-2 is dead — but only because Negroponte decided it should be a tablet.

Don’t look at me like that. I know, right? Yet another tablet entering the fray, and this one (claims Negroponte) will only cost $75. Well, that’s it then. Guess we can pack up the CrunchPad (bless its heart) and go home. Apple is probably quaking in its loafers as well, since the same latte-sucking Volvo-jockeys who want the Apple Tablet also love the idea of the OLPC. Charity and all that. Buy one, give one is a great promotion, and for a $75 unit, it’s a price most can afford. Assuming they hit that price target, of which there is no guarantee. On the other hand, Microsoft is probably happy that there’s one less dual-touchscreen device to compete with the Courier.

Here’s what Negroponte had to say about the XO 3.0 in a recent interview with Xconomy:

2.0 has been replaced by two things: 1) model 1.75, same industrial design but an ARM inside, 2) model 3.0, totally different industrial design, more like a sheet of paper… completely plastic and unbreakable, waterproof, 1/4″ thick, full color, reflective and transmissive, no bezel, no holes. 1W. $75, ready in 2012.

Sounds like a <del datetime="2009-11-04T01:33:23+00:00">fantasy</del> winner! He also notes that the OLPC program is splitting into a hardware arm and grassroots/education arm. The original XO will be updated with a new processor but will continue to ship pretty much as is. They’re also requesting that OLPC be changed to “olpc,” a demand I find onerous (and pointless).

What the device would actually be capable of is anybody’s guess, but a basic e-book reader and browser seems to be the minimum feature set. I’m torn between an affinity for traditional computing (which is probably fundamental to a modern education) and traditional education, which the XO 3.0 would most certainly make easier. As a commenter at Slashdot points out, “in any third-world country access to ‘open source’ text books on any subject at zero extra cost would be more important than the actual “educational computer” functionality.” Text books to be sure, not to mention the world’s literature and current events. The village library just got a lot bigger.

Whatever happens, we can’t expect it before 2012, which really renders discussion moot, seeing as the entire landscape of tech will have changed by then. So I guess the CrunchPad and Apple Tablet aren’t in danger just yet. Hell, we’ll probably be on version 3.0 ourselves by that time. But while the consumer tech market is a moving target, third-world literacy and grassroots education are always welcome. Even though Negroponte has pretty much said that this is a business endeavor and not a charitable one, it may yet do a lot of good.

Flip definitely created a market that no one knew existed, when the came out with their now famous line of portable camcorders (or pocketcams). There have been a few other brands, with a few different feature sets, and now Vivitar is going to throw their product into the lineup.

The Vivitar does bring a new night vision feature to the table, being one of the first to do so. The DVR-510 also includes a totally waterproof case, meaning you don’t need to worry if you’re shooting at the pool or the beach. The bad news is that the video quality is somewhat lacking, running at a maximum of 640×480. The camera has 2GB of built-in storage, and has an SD card slot so you can add more if needed (though 640×480 video won’t require a lot of space).

Vivitar’s new camera is priced very attractively at $50. For the feature set, it’s a more than reasonable price. Be warned that the picture quality may not be the best, but it should be good enough for family video.

Though some may find it to be convergence run amok, the “MP3 Wireless Speaker Fog Free Shower Mirror” kills a fair amount of morning time birds with one stone.

For starters, you’ve got a fog-free shower mirror. Hooray! But this mirror also has a built-in clock so you can keep an eye on how late you’re running. Hooray! Finally, this fog-free mirror with built-in clock also features waterproof speakers and a base station that streams music from your MP3 player up to 100 feet away. Hip! Hip! Hooray!

Oh, you can also “store your razor in the underneath compartment.” Hooray again and whatnot. The whole shebang is priced at $70, too. I would have expected to see it at around $150 or so. Consider me pleasantly surprised.

Kim Kardashian’s done it. Paris Hilton’s done it. Ron Jeremy invented it. And Screech perfected it. Now it’s your turn to jump on the bandwagon because nothing takes your career to the next level quite like a sex tape!

Why Make A Sex Tape?
Ohhh the sex tape. Kinky. Homemade. Easy to make. The sex tape is not only for nostalgia, but also for learning purposes, because you can remember the night no matter how much alcohol you drank, savor your performance, and improve upon it. Hey, you might even become famous. Besides, nothing is as hot as watching yourself in action.

The Equipment: What You’ll Need
You can make an impromptu sex tape with as much as a camera phone in a bathroom stall. But if you’re looking to make this tape up to par with your family favorite DVDs, you need to take the time to prep: you’ll need a real HD camcorder like the Sony HDR-CX12 with Night Shot mode for that professional look and feel and HD makeup for porn star quality perfection. Men, the makeup applies to you too – think about baring it all below the belt in HD and tell me you don’t want makeup. If you’re in the moment and the mood strikes without proper time to set-up, you may want to consider a mini camera that you can grab on-the-fly for some serious close ups. Handheld cameras like the Sanyo VPC-WH1 HD Waterproof Camcorder (waterproof is so essential) or the ever popular Flip are portable so you’ll be prepared to capture whatever surprises your session brings.

Choosing & Setting the Mood
Setting up your DIY sex studio is probably the most difficult aspect of your homemade sex tape. Are you into fantasy role playing? Is this a shower video? Amateur action on the couch? No matter where you decide to film, there are a few basic steps you can take when setting up the scene to ensure maximum cinematic greatness. Your apartment could definitely use some mood lighting, and with the Color Light DVD all you do is pop it in your DVD player and let the mood enhancing colors do the rest. You can also enhance your standard bed or couch a la 1970’s with the Magic Fingers system that upgrades standard inanimate objects with a super powered vibrating motor. Always a crowd pleaser.

Perform Like a Porn Star but Remember Camera Angles
You need to consider the angles that the camera will capture. If you set-up the camera at the foot of your bed, chances are that your video will be up close and personal with your backside. And I promise you that it will not be a flattering movie you will want to watch over and over. Especially if you’re a dude. Instead, place the camera to the side of your bed at an angle to capture all the sideways, upside down, and inside out action. To help you out, check out this bendable Joby Tripod for hands free video capture.

Be Inspired – Best Free Porn Sites
Watch a few amateur pornos, check out a few websites, and get inspired with your partner. Aside from getting your libido started, these videos will help inspire you for your lights, camera, action moment. Check out sites like PornoTube or RedTube for short clips or even movies to help get you in the mood.

Sharing Your Video Is Caring
Don’t forget that sharing is caring! If you took your video on your cell phone, e-mail NSFW clips to your boo to remind him or her how exceptional you really are. Or if you choose a camcorder to film your video, make sure you choose a camera with easy transfer to your computer and TV. If you want to keep your video private you could enlist the help of an Iron Key encrypted Flash Drive. If you only want to share footage with specific people online, try Vimeo, a service that offers HD quality video and password protection. However, if you choose to share your video with the world (which you obviously should), try uploading videos first to YouTube for maximum exposure. Chances are that the video will get banned so you should also upload to YouTube’s x-rated cousin YouPorn. Similar sites include Spankwire, Pornotube, and RedTube. Hey, why not have a viewing party and display your flick on that big screen TV in your living room? Just remember to close the blinds first!

I make no secret of my bag fetish. I love ‘em. And what with Seattle winters being as cold and wet as a dog’s nose, I’ve been thinking for a while of getting a weather-resistant laptop bag. My Manhattan Portage is far from a sponge, but I still feel the need to hold my umbrella over it when it’s pouring. I’d rather have something a little more… like this.

The new Buran, from well-known bagmasters Chrome, is lined with “truck tarp,” which sounds pretty waterproof to me. In addition to that, the laptop-holding bit is further protected from the elements, in case… I don’t know. Just in case. It looks like it ratchets down pretty tight, too — I appreciate that, don’t need the cover flopping around all over the place. Makes a noise, and that’s bad news if you’re a ninja.

It’s also a very handsome bag regardless of its ruggedness. I suppose that makes it ruggedly handsome, like Daniel Craig and myself. We’ll see how handsome and rugged it is in real life, anyhow, when I review it.

USB media represents a double-edged sword: on the one hand, data portability is an extremely useful thing; but on the other hand, data portability can be a gigantic liability for your business operations. You can try to train your users not to put sensitive data on USB drives, but chances are that convenience will win out over security, and your data will slip out on USB media anyway. And then it’s all too easy for USB media to simply disappear: I can’t count how many thumb drives I’ve lost. New products are coming soon to help solve this problem.

Lexar is releasing their Jumpdrive S3000 FIPS, “the world’s first smartcard-based Level-3 FIPS certified USB flash drive”. This means that the data you put onto the drive is encrypted in such a way as to pass the U.S. Government’s security standards. I’ve had a review model for a couple weeks now that I’ve been playing with, so expect a full review soon. Basically, a little shim application is run from the Jumpdrive itself which locks (encrypts) and unlocks (decrypts) the data for use. You assign a password upon initialization, and are thereafter prompted to enter that password in order to unlock the drive. After too many consecutive authentication failures, the data is automatically deleted from the drive. I don’t have the ability to perform a real cryptographic attack against this thing; but my experiences so far indicate that your data will be secure (and waterproof!).

Fujitsu has on display a CEATEC similar secure USB drives. The stand’s label is “Technology for Safely Transporting Sensitive Data Featuring Secure USB Memory”. There’s no indication that this is FIPS certified, and no specific encryption algorithm is mentioned; but the Fujitsu model does list a couple of other features that will be particularly useful in enterprise scenarios. You can limit transfer of data to or from the device to only authorized computers (presumably via some sort of software authentication mechanism). Data can be set to “expire” (read: automatically deleted) after a certain time. And the unit maintains a comprehensive log of operations for auditing purposes.

Note that the Fujitsu website makes it pretty clear this is still in prototype stages, while Lexar’s Jumpdrive S3000 FIPS is a real product you’ll be able to buy.

They’ll cost around thirty bucks when they hit the market next month. And who knows, maybe they’ll be available here in the US some day. Americans have pools and TVs! Plus, those big buttons might do well with some of our drooling senior citizens, God bless ‘em all.

If there is one thing I learned while testing this bag it was that there are better bags out there than a $60 Targus for sale at the airport electronic boutique. And so I’m pleased to introduce the Loopbag Vanguard 15-inch Backpack in brown.

In my humble opinion this bag is immeasurably better than a heavy, cheap messenger bag style laptop carrier but it does have pros and cons. First the Pros.

Visually this bag is nice. Its sales material states that it has a semi-rigid frame so it maintains its good looks full or empty. This is definitely true: from the outside you can hardly tell whether it’s stuffed or completely empty.

The bag I tested was deep brown. I was impressed with how clean the bag stayed after two weeks of everyday use. This was helped by the fact that the bag is water resistant, a fact I unwillingly tested when caught in an unexpected rain. Impressively, when I arrived home my laptop and everything else in the bag were totally dry. Its Nylon top feels like it is rubber coated, and all the external zippers are covered.

This bag also features a very nice security feature that is brilliant in its simplicity. The zippers to the main compartment can (but don’t necessarily have to) zip to behind your back. That is to say, you can put the zippers where you have to take off the bag to get at them. On a crowded subway, or other urban environment, this is a easy, convenient way to avoid potential theft. I have actually wondered what would stop someone from reaching in my bag on the subway when I have my headphones in and am being jostled by a crowd. This bag addresses that issue is a non-complicated way that you are likely to use every day.

Internally this bag is as well constructed as the outside. It has a nice padded laptop sleeve, and several other pockets. However this is where I have some problems with the bag.

The biggest problem I encountered was that this bag is small. Of course you can tell that from the outside, but it seems like it doesn’t store very much even for its size. There is enough room for a laptop, one large textbook, and a variety of pencils and small tools. There isn’t even a very good spot for my laptops power block. There is absolutely no accommodation for a water bottle, I carry one almost all the time, and it was a constant source of frustration to try to jam it in behind the laptop sleeve.

My only other complaint was that the bag is slightly hot to wear. Because of its waterproof rubbery texture, it feels like you are wearing a trash bag against your back at times. This was not a major problem, and I more than forgave the bag after it saved my electronics from the rain. It is simply a trade-off for the ease of mind waterproofing gives you.

Bottom Line
Overall I would suggest this bag, It distributes the weight of a laptop much better than a messenger bag, looks more stylish, and is both water-resistant and secure. However, I would not advise getting this to haul all your books and supplies. It is not a true backpack because of its limited storage. It is just a laptop bag. If that is what you need, then this is a good choice.

USB gadget specialized Thanko strikes again. This time, the Tokyo-based company gives you a small portable camera [JP] that can be attached to your bike or helmet, for example. The so-called Action Camera is similar to a device Thanko released in May, but this new model isn't waterproof.

But it can record video at 30fps (in 640 x 480 VGA), weighs just 80g and stores video on MicroSD cards (up to 2GB, the internal memory is 32MB only). Charge the battery for 2.5 hours and you can use the Action Camera for up to 2 hours. Needless to say, there is also a USB 2.0 port (this is a Thanko product, after all).

Hopefully you’ll never have to test a fireproof or waterproof hard drive in a real life situation but you can rest assured that many of the claims put forth by these manfucturers are true. We tested the both FireKing MediaVault HD and the IoSafe Solo for water-fastness and one of them for fire proofing and came away quite impressed.

The IoSafe Solo is a hard drive that can hold up to 1.5TB of data. The drive is flood proof and fireproof up to 1550 degrees Farenheit for a half hour. It connects to your Mac or PC with a USB 2.0 cable and requires an external power source. You can also bolt the drive down to prevent it from getting washed away. It starts at about $149.

The FireKing MediaVault is a bit more heavy duty. The drive itself is a standard 500GB pocket hard drive. You can add another one of your own by connecting it to another USB cable. A USB hub on the back routes two cables into the box itself through small holes in the bottom that are closed with fireproof plastic. This thing is a monster. It weighs 55 pounds and is clad in plastic and, as well discovered, filled with light concrete. It can survive at 125 degrees for one hour without affecting the contents.

The first test involved dunking both drives into a kiddie pool. Both drives were affected by moisture. The IoSafe stopped working and we found that the FireKing was slightly moist inside. We stopped testing of the IoSafe because it seemed the internal USB hardware was broken. IoSafe told us that you can remove a few screws to remove the hard drives inside and simply mount them as regular drives. Both were salvageable.

The FireKing looked like it deserved more of a beating so I gave it to my neighbor Carmine to work on with an oxy-acetylene torch. As you see from the above video most of the plastic burned off but the inside stayed nice and cool. Even the water that was left over from the dunking test stayed in the case.

Both drives survived quite a bit of torture. The IoSafe seemed at first to be broken but it only took a moment to free the drives from their internal container. The MediaVault also withstood quite a bit of abuse and would have kept anything inside safe – at least for a few more minutes.

Bottom Line
Both of these drives are quite bulky but if you need something that can keep your documents and data from going extra tasty crispy, these are definitely two drives that can survive all sorts of abuse.

I’ll admit I was a little skeptical when the Morpheus Culinary watch first slipped out of its little leather pouch and onto my table. It looked as garish as an overweight, open shirted tourist wearing cargo shorts and a Hawaiian shirt. But then, to continue the metaphor, the watch seemed to get give me a plate of hot wings and a beer and said dig in, slowly getting me drunk as it told me stories about fishing expeditions involving copious amounts of alcohol and scantily clad island women. In short, this is one fun watch.

The overall design cue comes from high end cookware. The watch has a small handle that acts as a crown guard and the buttons and crown are supposed to look like stove handles. The hands are huge and brightly lumed and it is running an ISA 8173 quartz movement with alarm, small seconds, day of week, and second time zone. The register at 2 o’clock shows the seconds while the one at 10 o’clock shows the alarm status and the “battery power.” The 6 o’clock register shows day of week while the arrow hand shows the alarm time and the ball-tip “seconds” hand is actually a 2nd time zone.

The watch is aimed at cooks so it’s big and bold and, most importantly, inexpensive. At $375 it’s inexpensive enough to be a nice gift for the cook in your life and it’s durable enough to survive a few bake cycles.

Yes, the gold is quite gaudy but you’re not wearing this watch to the opera. It also comes in stainless steel, which will reduce the anguish considerably. Gold bracelet is comfortable if slightly on the light side. In all the design is quite nice.

It is waterproof to 5 ATM.

Now for a few problems. First, the 2nd time zone hand looks too much like a traditional second hand. This could confuse the novice. Second, there is no chronograph. I use my Seamaster Chrono as a cooking timer with abundant regularity. Sure you can set an alarm to warn you when your quiche is done but the stopwatch – with it’s one step start and stop – is a much better solution. This watch seems to suggest that cooks are also culinary globetrotters, which is a fine sentiment.

Bottom Line
This is the company’s first watch and they’re obviously limited by the feature set of the quartz movement they chose. I’ve always said that watchmakers should target chefs. Their hands are always on camera and their wrists are quite prominent when they are deboning chickens and the like. Looks like Morpheus has taken this idea to it’s obvious conclusion and created a whimsical and quite cool watch for the chef in all of us.

Here are some comments from iFixIt’s tear down of the 3G S. Theirs also included a girl.

* Thankfully, opening the iPhone 3G S is as simple as the 3G. After
removing two Phillips screws, the two halves of the phone are separated
easily using a suction cup.

* The iPhone is differentiated externally only by a new model number,
A1303. The lettering on the back is now shiny, like the Apple logo.

* The internal physical design is virtually identical to the iPhone 3G.
A random passerby on the street would not know the difference. Heck,
even we were struggling to differentiate the two.

* The new graphics core should drastically improve performance, meaning
Apple’s serious about the handheld gaming market.

* There’s still a “Do not remove” sticker above the logic board.
Naturally, we removed it.

* Nearly all components have been relocated to the front side of the
main PCB, including the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Flash memory chips.

* The battery is 4.51 Watt-hours, or 1219 mAh. That’s about 6% larger
than the iPhone 3G’s battery. Hopefully the hardware runs more
efficiently, since increased battery life will not come from the battery
itself.

* There is an additional antenna connection near the dock connector.
We’re not sure what for just yet. However, we do love exploring these
teasers… Stay tuned!

* For those who are wondering about the fingerprint-resistant coating on
their iPhone 3G S screen: The oleophobic, or oil-proof, technology
evolved from waterproofing. Oil-proof technology is harder to achieve as
oil has a much lower surface tension than water, so it spreads out
easier and thus is harder to get rid off. MIT’s solution was to create a
coating material which creates a layer of micro fibers, but with a much
larger contact angle between the oil droplets and the fibers.

Some comments on usability of the 3G S:

* Camera quality is much improved from the 3G. Close-up shots were
possible down to about 5 cm, and the brightness adjusted well when
picking a focus area.

* The oleophobic screen does seem to clean slightly easier than the 3G’s
normal screen.

* Google Earth (duration of the spinning load wheel) (over Wi-Fi): 3G
S: 4.9 sec; 3G: 22.2 sec. A bit faster than Apple’s claim of 2X speed
improvement — although we know that one simple test of one application
means little in the real world.

If you have a swimming pool then you, my friend, need this little waterproof floating wireless speaker that looks like the thing that pops up out of the muck in the trash compactor in Star Wars. This one doesn’t have a cool robotic eye, though, just “Rich sounding bass. Crisp treble. And no wires.”

While I can almost guarantee that, being a wireless speaker, it does NOT have rich sounding bass, it would be a nice technological accoutrement to have bobbing around in the water during your next swanky pool party.

Your guests will look on in amazement as the same stale Clear Channel-sponsored Top 40 rotation that’s been playing for what seems like eternity seeps out of the speaker, each song sounding exactly like the one before it — a group of guys yelling “Ayyy!” during the chorus of every song and Lady Gaga’s Pokerface playing every hour, on the hour.

But I digress. The “poolPOD Wireless Floating Waterproof Speaker” is on sale at Newegg for $65. It comes with a 900MHz base station, audio cable, and AC adapter.
