Long-suffering handset maker Sony Ericsson is all about the UX, people, and they've got the screens to prove it. The new system does basically what everyone else is doing and it brings all of your friend's content into something called TimeScape (there's another one for media called Media Scape.)

Their new UX UI looks pretty amazing - you basically drag cards all over the screen with your finger, which is quite interesting and it's made all the better by having some lady and two dudes show you how everything works.

Man - ever heard of raining on someone's parade, Sony Ericsson? Today's the first day of Nokia World, a big ol' event dedicated to, well, Nokia. That isn't keeping Sony Ericsson from holding their own seperate bash, where they've just announced the Xperia X2, the followup to last year's rich-blooded QWERTY-sliding X1. We'd heard rumors a few days ago that Sony was going to make it official this week - and sure enough, it's the real deal now.

Sir Howard Stringer is in the house for Sony’s IFA press conference. Please refresh this post to read new comments.

11:06 Talking about how Sony is changing.

11:08 The 3d train is on the track. Focus on cinema 3d.

4k digital projectors. Up to 1300 3d projectors in Regal Cinemas.

11:14 3d content coming to Sky in UK and Blu Ray disks. Expect more 3d on tv next year.

Moto Storm on PS3 is pretty hot. 3d changes the experience.

Now talking about video delivery on the Playstation Network. Lots of European partners.

11:19 PSN content coming to other devices – not just Playstation/PSP. Huh.

New global brand message. Make.Believe.

Contribute content to Sony. Connects designers and engineers.

Seriously not sure what it means. It’s weird. It will connect brands, services, and content.

11:25 Fujio Nishida now on stage. President of Sony Europe. He says people are watching less TV.

TV programming is for sit back watching. Much more enjoyable if online content could hit the tv. Bravia tvs with new Bravia Internet Video.

Triple HD tuners for satellite users.

Blu Ray players will have built in wifi.

11:30 Exmor chips better low light video and stills. WX1 and TX1 are the flagship cameras. Sweep panorama mode creates a stitched image in a second.

Party Shot device for parties.
Pans and zooms as guests pass by.

Now talking about Alpha DSLRs.

Planning Twilight Football games. Games played at twilight in multiple countries.

11:41 Now for Sony Xperia X2 with winmo 6.5.

Sony readers. We’ve already seen them. Meh.

Walkmen. OLED touchscreens. Wearable walkmen. Boring Sydney booring.

Now Vaio X series. Sony ultralight. 11 inch screen. All day battery. Released next year.

11:48 All done.

Oh man, Expansys. Either you've got someone who doesn't know how to punch in embargo dates properly, or whoever is in charge of determining when your product pages go live likes to live on the edge.
A group of tinkers have been hard at work getting the Panels interface from the Sony Xperia working on the HTC Touch HD. Progress is being made at a decent rate, as evidenced by a few YouTube videos that have been released.

Why do such a thing? Well, as one of the guys says, “I like the look of this front end alot better than the TF3D.” So, rather than complain about the user interface, they adapt their own. Good on them.

Head over to MobiltyToday as they examine, in gory detail, what they’re calling “The ultimate Windows Mobile phone anyone can ask for… ” My only question is this: what if I never asked for a WinMo phone from Sony Ericsson? What if I asked for the charm and power of a UIQ-powered P800, my first and favorite smartphone? What if asked for a logical addition to the S-E family instead of some weird HTC-designed monstrosity? What if I asked for some S-E phones on these shores? I’m happy they’re trying, but this ain’t the direction they should be taking if they want to hit the big time.

I was talking to some mobile guys in Stockholm and one mentioned that S-E was always doing well and now moved to WinMo while Motorola is betting on Android, which, in my opinion, is a smart move for low-end smartphone manufacturers. We’ll have to wait another few months before they make a similar announcement. To showcase all the gloriousness that is the X1, SE will be streaming a live webcast for all to watch on the 15th. The webcast will consist of an in-depth hands-on demo and the world premiere of Johnny X. What the crapcakes is Johnny X?

Johnny X is about a young man with amnesia desperately piecing together his identity. The webisodic thriller comprises of nine episodes, created to demonstrate the rich, immersive and experiential elements of the Xperia™ X1.

The storyline follows Johnny X on his mission to rediscover his identity. As he finds out more about his lost life in a race against time, he updates his Xperia™ X1 with new content to piece together his personality and identity, reflecting how the phone can be personalized to suit users’ individual lifestyle and needs. Will Johnny X find out who he really is before it’s too late?

“Producing the Johnny X thriller has given us an engaging platform to demonstrate all the capabilities and features a user can experience with the Xperia™ X1 phone,” said Lennard Hoornik, Head of Marketing at Sony Ericsson. “The panel interface is a perfect way to reflect your personality and can be tailored and changed to suit your exact needs at any given time. No two Xperia™ X1 will ever have the same combination of panels on the phone; we are all individuals and deserve to have a phone that reflects that. ”

Over a three week period, one new episode of Johnny X will be posted online at www.sonyericsson.com/Johnnyx every Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting on Monday, September 22. Check out the trailer for the series at www.whoisjohnny-x.com

I was about to eat some fiber today but I basically cleaned myself out after reading about the Xperia X1 SDK that enables programmers to add panels to their X1 and be “be spoilt for choice” in the ability to add and remove those panels at will. If you recall, the X1 runs Windows Mobile and has panels. These panels are ways of looking at information – you could have a gaming panel, a To Do panel, and a panel reminding you that the X1 is a hunk of garbage – all accessible from one easy-to-access place. When can you get the X1? Probably never because S-E can’t seem to get it’s head around selling phones in the US. Now you see why I’m so excited, right?

So there you have it: the extent of Sony-Ericsson’s ingenuity. Adding panels to Windows Mobile 6.1. If I wanted panels I’d hire a contractor.

Sony Ericsson Xperia(TM) X1 panel interface puts the user at the heart of the mobile experience

New Sony Ericsson Software Developers Kit (SDK) brings the Xperia(TM) X1 eco-system to life by offering mobile users choice and customisation
London, UK – 3 September 2008- Sony Ericsson today published its Software Developer Kit (SDK) for Xperia(TM) X1 and invited developers and content creators to capitalize on the opportunities offered by developing mobile content for the phone. Whether it is music, photography, email or instant messaging, gaming, social networking or video applications, developers can now create a host of unique multi-media entertainment and content for the Xperia(TM) X1 for consumers to enjoy.

Xperia(TM) X1 brings a totally new experience to mobile phone users by introducing nine easy-to-use, interactive panels which sit on the touch screen interface of the phone.

Developers can use the Windows Mobile SDK, free of charge, to produce a wide variety of panels to meet the consumer’s demand for a rich, individualised multimedia experience on their phone. Users of the Xperia(TM) X1 will be spoilt for choice as they personalize their handset with panel applications to suit their mood and lifestyle. Whether it is a search engine, advanced calendar or social networking application, music or film catalogue, sports or news related content, the panels enable you to access any information – quickly and directly – with a simple tap on the 3″ super high resolution touch screen.

“Sony Ericsson is committed to providing its customers with rich, open content environment to make their mobile experience more enjoyable and entertaining,” said Rikko Sakaguchi , CVP and Head of Creation and Development at Sony Ericsson. “Making the Windows Mobile SDK available for free to developers and mobile content creators will accelerate the development of new panels and applications for the Xperia(TM) X1, offering consumer choice and personalisation.
The Xperia(TM) X1 will offer the richest mobile user experience, putting the world at the fingertips of the user.”

Entertain yourself:
Customise your Xperia(TM) X1 panels so you are a touch away from your favourite content – music, film, TV, sports
Or, be the envy of your friends by watching TV or film clips in DVD quality on the three-inch high resolution touch-widescreen
Get picture happy on the 3.2 megapixel camera and show the images in crystal clear clarity on the 800 X 480 pixels screen
Access the latest 3D mobile games by simply touching a favourite gaming panel you have selected
Make your personal life a little easier:
Access all your contacts and calendar entries wherever you are, as the Xperia(TM) X1 can automatically sync with your PC making sure you never miss a birthday, anniversary or meeting
Search or book a holiday in your lunch hour by going online via a travel panel
Add your local supermarket website and do your weekly food shop in just a few taps on the bus on the way home
Read the latest restaurants reviews, look up cinema listings, call a friend or reply to personal email on the move using the full QWERTY keyboard
Find that bar, restaurant or hotel using Assisted GPS and Goggle Maps(TM) for mobile when you’re on vacation or a business trip
Work on the move:
Windows Mobile(TM) 6.1 makes working on the move easier with easy access to work emails and Microsoft® Office Mobile applications, such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint
Always stay up-to-date with colleagues and important appointments by syncing the handset to Microsoft Outlook on your work PC

“The X1’s panels are a simple but immersive way of interacting with content, services and applications that will delight and engage consumers,” said Todd Peters, corporate vice president, Mobile Communications Marketing Group, Microsoft Corp. “Sony Ericsson’s X1 is a fantastic demonstration of how to harness the power of Windows Mobile to connect people to the things they care about most.”

Xperia(TM) X1
Oh, that’s unfortunate. I’ve been eyeing this device since it was announced and have always thought the keyboard looked phenomenal. BGR is reporting, however, that the keyboard on the XPERIA X1 device is a “major flaw” – that’d definitely be a deal-breaker for more than a few people, myself included.

Not to say that this keyboard is absolutely terrible, but it’s one of the worst. Think Sony UX computer, for those of you that have one or have used one. The sliding mechanism comes right on top of the keys, and thus, the keys don’t travel a lot when pressed. They give little to no feedback despite having a cool triangular design.

Aside from the keyboard, everything else appears to be pretty delightful. The 800×480 screen would make surfing the web and watching movies on this thing much more palatable. The device that BGR got ahold of is only a pre-production unit, so “the software runs a little slow,” but the XPERIA still seems to perform admirably and should only improve with the final version. I don’t suppose that Sony-Ericsson is going to revamp the keyboard before the rumored September launch, though.

Lucky for us, BB got himself the Sony Ericsson X1, the phone we call “Lipstick on a Pig” for it’s melding of high fashion styling and cool form factor with Windows Mobile 6.

What does BB have to say?

Ummmm, I’m finally realizing my dream…..(no,,,, not the dream your thinking…… ) from over 5 years ago when I first got the Sony Ericsson P800 and then out-grew the kindergarden capable Symbian Operating System for my first Windows Pocket PC Operating System device, the iMate Pocket PC phone. What if I could have it all??? The all metal construction of my beloved Nokia 8890 cell phone, the bluetooth and construction quality of my Sony Ericsson P800/900 device, the hardware, processor, and memory of the iMate, coupled with the power of its Windows Mobile operating system??? Well, fuck, its been a long god-damn time……. …… but today….. it finally arrived!!

It has been a long god-damn time, son. Looking forward to seeing more of your signature crazy with a little jubbly thrown in… because it’s there.

I’ve heard February, March (clearly wrong), Summer, late Summer, “second half of 2008″ and “late 2008.” Well, not surprisingly, it looks like the latest estimate is the most accurate. Google has decreed:

“We’re still on track to announce Android-powered phones this year. Some of our partners are publicly stating that they plan to ship Android phones in the fourth quarter.”

I doubt it will be too little, but it may be too late. After all, the Diamond is out, new iPhone will (I don’t know if you heard this) be arriving next week by all estimates, followed shortly I’m sure by the Xperia, Ocean 2, and maybe even something from NVIDIA, for the love of god.

I’m rooting for you, Google, but if you want to get ahead in this game, you have to release a half-baked product and then revise it — like everyone else.
