There’s been a few stories over the years about people being overly sensitive to Wi-Fi. It makes them sick and whatnot. There’s usually one reaction to such stories: bologna. (That’s not my reaction, mind you. If you’re sick, you’re sick. Who am I to call you a liar?) Well now! A series of studies, carried out by the UK Department of Health, say “there is no consistent evidence to date that exposure to radio waves from wireless networks adversely affects the health of the general population and that there is no reason why schools and others should not use Wi-Fi equipment.”

Not a day goes by without coming across one or more stories related to The Pirate Bay. Today is no different, with OpenBitTorrent (a tracker that Hollywood has accused of being The Pirate Bay’s spiritual successor, serving some 550,000 “works”) being given a new lease on life by a Swedish court. The gist is, Hollywood wanted the tracker shut down, but said Swedish court denied the action.

Does anybody remember the DVD I blogged that was supposed to cure shyness in geeks by letting them look at 50 different girls over a time span of 96 minutes? The girls would just sit there, not saying or doing anything. The idea was to make you get used to looking at pretty girls on the TV to overcome your shyness in real life.

That was last year. And now we have the Hougen CD [JP], which is more or less trying to do the same thing – but this time not with video but audio. In my view this CD, a real product you can buy, is even dumber than aforementioned DVD: What you get is a CD on which 600 different Japanese girls say “Daisuki!” or “Meccha Daisukiyanen!”, which means “I love you!” in Japanese.

I’ll go on record and say that $25 seems like a lot of money for something like this. It’s an intriguing idea, though, and might make a good stocking stuffer or Secret Santa gift for the Apple fan in your life.

I don’t watch a lot of television programming, and I’m not particularly patient with the way “Big Media” treats me, the consumer. I really wanted to like Flash Forward, but it’s pretty clear that the show is more interested in hitting that 100 episodes mark to earn syndication than it is in delivering an interesting, gripping story. So I gave up on that, and on a lark decided to try Fringe, to kill some time. Unfortunately, Hulu doesn’t have the beginning of the series, let alone the beginning of the current season. I’m not excited about jumping into the show midstream. I’m also not interested in navigating the various network websites to find their hosted copies of the shows I might watch. Isn’t that what Hulu was supposed to do for me?

Enter Clicker.com. “Clicker aims to become the complete programming guide to Internet television.” Indeed, they have an impressive catalog of more than 400,000 television episodes from 7,000 different shows, not to mention movies and original web content. They’ve been around for awhile, but today they’re unveiling their new Boxee app, allowing you to access their impressive catalog of content from within Boxee.

The new Epson PictureMate Show could be the finest example of technical convergence that you will never use. It brings the two worlds of digital photography into one convenient device. Too bad that it will probably sit unused like most digital photo frames and 4 x 6 printers after the novelty wears off.

If you’ve got a surplus of power outlets in your home, I guess you should probably convert one to a USB outlet. It can be done for less than $10 and apparently only takes about 30 minutes.

Weird. I just got done blasting through the entire season of Storm Chasers (watched the final episode this morning). In just about every storm chaser’s vehicle, there’s a laptop set up with mapping software relaying GPS data along with an overlay of weather radar.

Comcast and General Electric announcedearly this morning that they agreed to form a joint venture that will be 51 percent owned by Comcast and 49 percent by GE. The joint venture, which will consist of the NBC Universal businesses and Comcast’s cable networks, regional sports networks and more, will be managed by the newly formed Comcast Entertainment Group (CEG).

EA announced that the demo to their much anticipated game, Dante’s Inferno would be available before the Holidays for your gaming enjoyment. The “Gates of Hell” demo lets users play through the entire first level of the game, introducing us all to the horrors abound in the Nine Circles of Hell. The demo opens with the protagonist returning from the crusades only to find that the love of his life has been murdered, and her spirit stolen by Lucifer.

Yamaha Japan today announced the YSP-5100 [JP], a digital sound projector for your home theater. Sized at 1,200×90×212mm and weighing 11kg, Yamaha says the device is suitable for 50-inch TVs or video projectors. It supports 7.1 surround sound and is compatible with dts-HD, dts ES and Dolby TruHD/Digital Plus/Digital/ Digital EX/Pro Logic and Pro LogicⅡ/x.

There’s a bit of a tizzy this week about Sprint allowing police officials to read up to 8 million “pings” on its network in order to track felons. Sprint made it considerably easier for police to do this by adding a special “portal,” probably a phone number-based dump of GPS data for phones over time, to the service they offer upon receiving a court order or a subpoena. I wonder, however, if this 8 million number isn’t far too high to be within the realm of sanity and/or if this number should make us

Tokyo-based Kenko-Tokina, normally known for its camera accessories, has announced a cute Disney-themed digital camera [JP] for the Japanese market today. Spec-wise, this 8MP point-and-shoot camera isn’t anything special, but that’s what you’d expect from a camera whose case shows Mickey Mouse giving Minnie a bucket of hearts.

Hell hath no fury like an GPLed application company scorned. Artifex, makers of Ghostscript (it’s basically a nice, open source PDF viewer) also makes something called muPDF, a tiny PDF viewer for mobile devices. Well, Palm’s PDF viewer is actually a direct infringement on muPDF.

Do you have any idea how effen cool it will be if Redbox kiosks start spitting out video games? Think about this: you would be able to get your beer, Funyuns, and rent the latest gaming titles at one location. The future is near, friends and Redbox is still pursuing the game rental market.

Actually, Redbox is experiencing some technical difficulties. You see, Warner Bros, Twentieth Century Fox, and NBC Universal have cut off access to their collective libraries because they do not get any revenue from the rental kiosks. Plus, Redbox is stating that 20th Century Fox and Warner Home Video are somehow stopping the company from purchasing movies at retail from Target and Wal-Mart.

Welcome to the jungle, Redbox. The movie industry makes it worse here everyday.

A friend of mine just asked me a few minutes ago whether she should spring for an SSD in her new laptop. No way, I told her — SSDs are improving far too quickly for a consumer to invest hundreds of dollars in something guaranteed to be superseded almost instantly. And lo and behold, almost as I was texting her, I noticed this post over at Giz about the newest Microns breaking speed records that were probably set within the last couple months.

I have written about gadgets and tech and whatnot for four long years now, but this is by far the greatest thing I have ever seen. It’s called the Freedom Tray, and it’s going to rock your world… with freedom. (Freedom haters need not apply.)
