Thieves disguised as Comcast installers rob, shoot man; Man still likely more angry about mystery charges on cable bill

June 5th, 2008

I’m not the first technology pundit to think that Comcast is constantly ripping us off, but this is a little ridiculous. Thieves, somehow outfitted with a Comcast truck, broke into a man’s apartment in Baltimore, MD, demanding money. The fake Comcast techs then shot him.
He was then handcuffed. Seeing an opportunity, he jumped through a [...]

Comcast trial throttles top users during peak hours

June 4th, 2008

Comcast will be running a month-long trial in certain areas of Pennsylvania and Virginia, which “will result in delayed response times for Internet traffic only for those customers who are using more than their fair share of available Internet resources at the time.”
The basic idea is that when the network gets clogged up, [...]

Comcast.com hackers just goofy stoners

May 30th, 2008

Bloops! Those hackers who took over comcast.com yesterday were outted by Wired today. It’s a pair of industrious fiends who go by Defiant and EBK. They took over the comcast.com DNS records, redirecting the cable giant’s traffic to their own site.
As it turns out, they were able to take over Comcast’s account at Network Solutions. [...]

Why Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and online streaming are threatening cable companies

May 29th, 2008

Comedy Central said last week that it will stream the comedy triumvirate of “The Daily Show,” “The Colbert Report,” and “South Park,” in their entirety, on Fancast.com. (Silly name, but whatever.) Beyond the “wow, neat” reaction, there’s something else going on here that we already hinted at a few days ago: what if people, seeing [...]

Hackers get comcast.com and have fun with it

May 29th, 2008

Look out, it’s Comcast Hackers attacking! A group of ne’er-do-wells defaced Comcast’s portal last night, pwning the landing page for many of its Internet subscribers who are too dumb to figure out how to set their own home page.

The attack was more than cosmetic, as it disrupted the @comcast.com email addresses of many users, as [...]

In using AmazonMP3, The Office shows tension between NBC, Apple

May 16th, 2008

Genuinely funny, last night’s episode of The Office (Hulu link) showcased the gravity of the situation between Apple and NBC. The long and short of it is, Michael wanted to create a mix CD using “M3Ps” for the office’s new human resources guy, who’s actually a girl; Michael falls in love with her immediately, or [...]

Comcast vans cause crash while street racing, 3-year-old in hospital

May 15th, 2008

There have been lots of stories of Comcast technicians screwing off, falling asleep, helping themselves to food, and other odd behavior, but this is just horrible.
Two Comcast vans were street racing in Huntsvill, AL, when one lost control and wrecked, hitting a car. Inside the car was three-year-old girl who’s now in a coma, and [...]

German study finds Comcast blocking BitTorrent traffic all day long, every day

May 15th, 2008

Flickr’d
No day is complete without some sort of Comcast-bashing; I oblige.
A German study has found that BitTorrent blocking really only occurs in two countries, here in the U.S. and in Singapore. Moreover, only cable ISPs bother to block BitTorrent traffic. The ISPs? Why, none other than Comcast and Cox, the two darlings of American [...]

Cablevision to roll out Wi-Fi broadband in NY area

May 9th, 2008

Cablevision, a regional ISP here in the north-east, will roll outwireless broadband coverage over the next two years. Unlike Comcast and Time Warner’s similar Clearwire venture, which uses WiMax, Cablevision’s uses Wi-Fi. Wonderful.
The good news for current Cablevision subscribers is that the service will be free when it launches; non-subscribers will be able to get [...]

Rumor: Comcast mulling 250GB/month download caps

May 7th, 2008

Comcast doesn’t like its customers. Well, not all of them, especially those who actually take advantage of the massive amounts of bandwidth it makes available, and is preparing to penalize those of you (or of us) that download tons of content. Rumors from Broadband Reports, the excellent connectivity ratings site, show that Comcast might be [...]
