German study finds Comcast blocking BitTorrent traffic all day long, every day

May 15th, 2008

No day is complete without some sort of Comcast-bashing; I oblige.
A German study has found that BitTorrent blocking really only occurs in two countries, here in the U.S. and in Singapore. Moreover, only cable ISPs bother to block BitTorrent traffic. The ISPs? Why, none other than Comcast and Cox, the two darlings of American [...]

Cablevision to roll out Wi-Fi broadband in NY area

May 9th, 2008

Cablevision, a regional ISP here in the north-east, will roll outwireless broadband coverage over the next two years. Unlike Comcast and Time Warner’s similar Clearwire venture, which uses WiMax, Cablevision’s uses Wi-Fi. Wonderful.
The good news for current Cablevision subscribers is that the service will be free when it launches; non-subscribers will be able to get [...]

Rumor: Comcast mulling 250GB/month download caps

May 7th, 2008

Comcast doesn’t like its customers. Well, not all of them, especially those who actually take advantage of the massive amounts of bandwidth it makes available, and is preparing to penalize those of you (or of us) that download tons of content. Rumors from Broadband Reports, the excellent connectivity ratings site, show that Comcast might be [...]

Rumor: Sprint and Clearwire closing WiMAX partnership deal?

May 6th, 2008

Speaking of Xohm, Sprint’s WiMAX initiative, rumors are swirling around Wall Street that Sprint will announce a partnership with Clearwire tomorrow, unifying their two disparate networks as one nationwide WiMAX network.
This is fantastic news for WiMAX fans and a step in the right direction if the technology is going to take on competitor LTE, or [...]

Time Warner thinking of selling Time Warner Cable

April 30th, 2008

In an earnings call today Time Warner reported that it was planning to spin off its Cable holdings, “under the right circumstances.” No specifics were noted but Time Warner Cable is obviously bolted on to the weak AOL and TW media holdings and not quite the best fit for a media company in the first [...]

Qwest to see how many suckers live in Minneapolis

April 25th, 2008

Looking to put a nail in its own coffin, Qwest is now offering 20Mbps DSL service in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area for $119.99 per month ($109.99 per month for the first year) in order to compete with Comcast’s high speed internet service, which offers speeds of up to 12, 16, or 50Mbps for $42.95, [...]

CrunchArcade: PS3 GTA IV to require 5-minute hard drive install

April 17th, 2008

The PS3 version of GTA IV will require a five-minute install. While five minutes isn’t a big deal, especially given how long we’ve already waited for the game, there’s bound to be the “I don’t like being forced to do anything” crowd. That said, most of the crowd on CVG seems to be cool with [...]

Comcast’s P2P Bill of Rights greeted with both skepticism and cynicism

April 17th, 2008

So much controversy surrounding Comcast’s “proposed” Bill of Rights and Responsibilities regarding P2P use. The Slashdot reaction was typical: I pay for a service and they’d better damn well deliver said service. That’s hard to argue. Another idea I liked: Comcast is only proposing this Bill in order to prevent government regulation from taking effect. [...]

World’s most powerful laser developed in Texas

April 17th, 2008

Straight out of the University of Texas at Austin comes the world’s most powerful laser. I just assumed that most lasers were very powerful, but apparently the great state of Texas has the best one until someone else can come along and build an even more powerful laser or mounts this same laser to a [...]
