In your face, parents all over the world. After pleading with your children to quit rotting their brains with non-stop video game playing, your suggestion of playing a board game instead has backfired on you with the Nintendo edition of Monopoly.

Longtime Monopoly fans will find the traditional streets replaced with Nintendo characters. Mario – easily Nintendo’s most recognizable face – can be found in the place of Boardwalk, the standard game’s most expensive property.

Other features include Nintendo-themed player tokens, a special 60-minute speed play mode, power-ups and invincibility instead of houses and hotels, and a slew of other enhancements and changes that ought to help bridge the gap between Nintendo fans and Monopoly nuts.

Available for $34.99 at ThinkGeek.

There will be no Modern Warfare 2 for us. In a recent interview, Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling explained that the Wii’s relatively underpowered innards in comparison to the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 make it impossible to replicate “the cinematic experience” across all platforms.

“If we felt like we could deliver the cinematic experience we were going for on other platforms, then we would gladly move to that platform. Right now, we don’t think the Wii can deliver the exact experience that we’re doing. We like to be very equal across all platforms, and if it’s not equal then we won’t do it,” said Bowling.

Oh I see how it is. Just because there’s no HD and a whole lot more arm-flailing, it’s not the same? Sigh. It’s actually not the same. He’s right.

At least we’ll have Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Reflex Edition on the Wii the same day as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 comes out on all the other systems. It’s probably just as good as the new game, right? Except older and less cinematic? And not as good?

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said recently that his company would be testing out demo downloads of certain WiiWare titles this month. It’s unclear if this test program will only be for Wii owners in Japan or if those of us here in the U.S. would be able to participate as well.

Apparently the program “will cover just a few titles,” according to IGN.

Nintendo is apparently looking to attract more potential WiiWare customers and this program is an attempt to gauge whether or not offering game demos will ultimately result in increased purchases. As one of those potential customers myself, I’d like to add that I can’t believe it’s taken this long. Just make demos for all WiiWare games available already, eh?

While S:SoC never reached the heights of popularity of Half-Life, it was quite the interesting game in itself. Released in 2007, it combines a fairly straight forward FPS with some interesting survival horror elements. And hey, for $5.00, why the heck not?

As board games go, The Settlers of Catan is a psycho-erotic thriller capable of hooking even the most un-hookable of gamers.

Maybe “psycho-erotic thriller” isn’t the most accurate phrase. It’s a fun game, let’s leave it at that.

Those of you who have never played Catan before may very easily pass this one by but those of you who are into the game and own an iPhone or iPod touch will have little reason not to purchase it for $5.

It’s not without its drawbacks – there’s no Wi-Fi or internet-based multiplayer and the game board is downright tiny on the iPhone’s screen – but for five bucks, it provides a nice quick fix for Catan addicts in between real-life or Xbox Live rounds.

Here’s a quick hands-on showcasing the interface and whatnot:

Whoops. Philadelphia-area Gamefly members who have been wondering why in the hell they never got their rented copies of Cooking Mama finally have some answers. The culprit, 34 year old Reginald Johnson of Germantown, PA, stole some 2,200 Gamefly games while working as a mail-processing clerk between April and September of 2008.

The total value of the stolen games is $86,000. Johnson apparently traded many of the games in to GameStop for store credit, as authorities found several consoles and GameStop receipts in his SUV. Oh speaking of his SUV, he sped off in it when federal agents initially tried to arrest him. He eventually crashed the vehicle and took off running before being caught.

He had a duffel bag with him containing 81 Gamefly games and a search of his car turned up 79 additional games along with a bunch of stuff from GameStop. Johnson is facing 12 to 18 months in prison with sentencing to take place on January 13th.

If you find the full version of Madden (see review here) to be too expensive, complicated, or both but you still long for the thrill and prestige of legally-licensed NFL players and teams, then you’ll be happy to know that Madden NFL Arcade will be here sometime in December.

It’ll be available on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network in downloadable form for $15 and will feature 5-on-5 action on a 60-yard field. Your team is given four downs, there are no penalties or field goals, and the first team to 30 wins.

So, yeah, not quite like a full game of the big boy version of Madden but this one should be far more of a pick-up-and-play experience. And, as is an arbitrary requirement for all arcade style sports games, there are numerous power-ups to use throughout the game: “Add an entourage of lineman to get the sack, freeze an opposing player, turn off your opponent’s passing icons, and much more. No lead is safe in Madden NFL Arcade.”

No specific availability date yet, aside from “just in time for the holidays in December.”

Full press release:

EA Announces All-New Football Experience with Madden NFL Arcade

5-on-5 Pure Adrenaline NFL Football Meets the Award-Winning Football Franchise

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Oct 14, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Electronic Arts Inc. (Nasdaq: ERTS) announced today an all-new way to experience the Madden NFL franchise with Madden NFL Arcade – a fun, pick-up-and-play, 5-on-5 football game from EA Tiburon. Madden NFL Arcade is pure adrenaline football for both casual and diehard NFL fans, featuring a unique art style that brings your favorite players to life like never before! Madden NFL Arcade will be available as a download on Xbox LIVE Arcade and the PlayStation Store for 1200 MS Points and $14.99 respectively, just in time for the holidays in December.

“When you look around the office and see your whole team playing and having tons of fun with it, you know the game hit the right mark,” said marketing director Nathan Stewart. “We have diehard Madden fans who have worked on the franchise for a decade, and more casual gamers who are all playing together and enjoying it. If our productivity the past few weeks is any indication, we’ve created a game that everyone will love.”

Choose one of your favorite 32 NFL teams and distinctive home stadium for a battle with the best five players on each side of the ball, and let the excitement begin! Each team is given four downs to march 60 yards to pay dirt – no penalties or field goals allowed here, pal! Get your Madden NFL fix in a completely new way, with fast-paced games where the first team to 30 wins. Want to mix it up?Madden NFL Arcade can be tailored to fit your liking by changing options, such as skill level, points to win, and more; making each game unlike the one before. Take advantage of 13 unique “Game Changers” to break the game wide open on a single play. Add an entourage of lineman to get the sack, freeze an opposing player, turn off your opponent’s passing icons, and much more. No lead is safe in Madden NFL Arcade.

Madden NFL Arcade is the perfect video game for gameday, allowing up to four players to play co-op on a single console. You can also take on the world online in head-to-head matches and track your performance via interactive leaderboards. If you like to commemorate your gridiron success, Madden NFL Arcade will also provide a host of achievements and trophies to boost your gamer score.

Philadelphonistas? Philadelphonzos?) – Philadelphians! You have your weekend all mapped out for you, assuming you’re a geek.

Start by going to the 2009 Video Game Expo today, tomorrow, and Sunday. Then either at 3:00 or 7:30 on Sunday, swing by the Kimmel Center and catch the magical sound shower that is… Video Games Live. It’s a full orchestra that plays music from video games. You will like it.

Speaking of Magical Sound Shower, here’s Video Games Live playing songs from OutRun.

You’ll recall that OutRun is one of the greatest games in the history of gaming. That is all.

Much is made over the amount of money businesses lose because of procrastination. You know, the Almighty Dollar and everything. There’s a new Dutch Web site out there, cantyouseeimbusy.com (Can’t You See I’m Busy?—HILARIOUS~!), that provides “work-looking” games that you can play without your boss knowing.

The games, I think, are largely rubbish, but I can understand what the site’s creators are going after. Play ‘em if you want, but I’m most interested in the little graphic seen here.

That’s right, the total monetary value of the time wasted on the Web site is now €237,385, which is just show of $350,000. Considering you can hardly find a good-sized house in a nice neighborhood for that kind of money (well, maybe you can now, given that the housing market has collapsed here in the U.S.), I wouldn’t worry about gaming costing your small business and arm and a leg.

Let your workers goof off every now and then, or they’ll be miserable little wretches, which is even worse for your bottom line!

For the financially unencumbered, though, this may be a worthwhile purchase as you follow your dream of becoming Intergalactic Mini Golf Champion of the Universe.

There are two built-in courses and the actual putting system works by rolling a real-life golf ball toward the base of the 32-inch LCD video screen, at which point “the ball is detected by the game’s computer [and] the virtual world takes over, calculating both the direction and speed of the ball.”

Up to four players can play, and courses include a “casino-themed Las Vegas course or the tiki torch-themed Paradise Island.”

Developed by THQ, the game mimics the experience of being on The Biggest Loser Ranch just like the TV contestants, except that you get to live in your own house and you can keep eating delicious donuts with reckless abandon — it’ll be our little secret.

Choose from 4, 8, or 12 week programs full of “structured routines with special weekly challenges, weigh-ins and eliminations” or create your own customized workout routines consisting of over 90 “upper and lower body exercises, as well as core, cardio and yoga exercises.”

While the Wii version appears to push most of the exercise stuff, the $30 DSi version (also compatible with the DS) serves more as a portable calorie counter and nutritional information system although you also get “complete exercise routines.” The Wii version is Balance Board compatible, although it’s not required.

Here’s more from the press release:

The Biggest Loser interactive fitness game is a fun and engaging way for players to get in shape and maintain their ideal fitness level. Set at The Biggest Loser ranch, players can take The Biggest Loser challenge and compete in 4, 8 or 12 week programs against former contestants from the television show, or work out with a friend to form a support system to see who really is The Biggest Loser. Players will work out to a series of structured routines with special weekly challenges, weigh-ins and eliminations, or they can even create their own workout routines. Workouts include upper and lower body exercises, as well as core, cardio and yoga exercises. Progress is documented on a calendar that keeps track of in-game achievements, upcoming training and weigh-in dates. Players can also input exercise done while not playing the video game, such as going for a walk or a bike ride.

The interactive fitness game also features 50 healthy recipes from The New York Times best-selling book seriesThe Biggest Loser to help users learn how to eat right for optimal weight loss. Throughout the Wii workout program, suggestions and tips from contestants and trainers will also help guide players as they transform their lives via diet and exercise. The video game also features an interactive calorie counter that tracks what players are eating and recommends their daily intake based on individual height and weight and fitness goals.

When paired together, the Wii and Nintendo DSi/DS products become powerful training partners with Nintendo DSi/DS serving as a portable tool. Featuring nutritional information on thousands of foods, including menu items from some of today’s most popular restaurants, users can count their calories and even get healthy recipe suggestions on the go. Players can take their ‘trainer’ with them for food and fitness tips, as well as complete exercise routines that encourage them to stick to their wellness goals no matter where they are. To find out more information on The Biggest Loser interactive fitness game, go to www.biggestloserthegame.com.

Available in North America starting today and heading to the UK and Australia “over the coming months.”

If you don’t have any ROMs, there are around 100 downloadable demo movies “that provide over two full days of unique NES gameplay footage,” according to the UberNES.com website. Aside from that, installation consists of copying the Nintendo Saver.scr file into your Windows/System32 directory (yes, Windows only) and then pointing it at your ROMs directory to create a library content to pull from. You don’t need to install a separate emulator in order to play the games either.

The best thing is that they’ve included a working demo of the game on the web page so all you have to do is sit there and tap your life away until those monsters in the background come and eat you. Fun, fun stuff.

Monsters under your bed? Yeah, me too. Scary, isn’t it? I hate going to sleep at night! You and I both need one of these six-foot Link statues for protection. Unfortunately, there’s only one for sale on eBay right now. You can have it, I guess. I’ll wait for the next one.

The Link Statue stands almost six feet tall and weighs almost 80 pounds. It ships from Australia, which is going to cost a damn fortune at $500 – unless you’re in Australia, then it’ll cost $200 to $300. That’s in Australian dollars, too, so to the US it’d be $437.25, which is still too rich for my blood – monsters under the bed or not.

The auction ends Thursday afternoon and is already up over $650 (US). I’m guessing the guy who’s selling it has a serious girlfriend now. That’s gotta be the reason. This would be one of the last things I’d sell if I needed extra money.
