Toshiba Corp. (6502) announced yesterday it plans to convert Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology (TMD) into a wholly owned subsidiary. TMD is an LCD manufacturing joint venture formed by Toshiba and Matsushita (now Panasonic). The joint venture produces around 10% of small LCD panels. It’s second only to Sharp in this market segment.
It looks like Sharp is seeing its (near) future in LCD TVs and solar panels. The company tomorrow sets up Sharp Display Products Corporation (SDP), a subsidiary based in Osaka. In addition, Toshiba will be partnering with Sharp to step up production of solar panels. The picture shows a solar-powered LCD TV Sharp showcased in July last year.
Whoops. Hitachi is the latest manufacturer admitting to LCD price fixing and another win for the U.S. Justice Department. Last year, LG and Sharp also plead guilty on similar charges and paid $520 million combined in fines. Hitachi’s case involves fixing prices of LCD that were sold to Dell between 2001 and 2004. So that means if you purchased a laptop of LCD monitor between those times from Dell, you can probably raise and shake your fist at Hitachi cause you probably overpaid.
Shocker of the day, folks: modern A/V technology is selling well in Japan. DfK Marketing Services Japan just announced the results of a 2008 study which concluded that the Blu-ray format and flat-panel TVs are seeing sales numbers increasing. Actually, it’s impressive as the country is experience an economic slow down similar to ours here in the States.
Need a handy dandy spot to store your notebook when using an external display? Yeah, of’course you do. This instructable guides you through the easy steps need to attach a wire mesh file holder to the back of an LCD monitor. Honestly though, just pop out holes that align to the monitors VESA mount on the file holder, screw to monitor, and cut out one side of the holder. That’s it, captain.
We all know the benefits of OLED and seen the figures on how much energy it saves and all that jazz, but do you know how it actually works? Well, you’re in for a treat, friend. Sit back, relax and enjoy this 4.5 minute video. The next time anyone asks what OLED is just direct them to this video. It breaks it down pretty well. It’s a shame they aren’t ready for the masses, though.
A third-party Mac repair company will now slap a matte screen on your 15-inch MacBook Pro. You’ll remember that when the MacBook Pro was introduced in October, plenty of people freaked out because Apple didn’t offer a matte option.
Looks like the second largest manufacturer of LCD displays, LG, has just inked a deal with Apple to provide it with LCD panels for the next 5 years. They haven’t disclosed the full extent of the deal, but did say that Apple will be paying $500 million in advance. So does this mean that we’ll be seeing new LED backlit displays soon?
Eco is the new buzzword and there is no escaping at CES this year. There isn’t a CE manufacturer out there that wants to be caught dumping toxic materials into consumers livingrooms; Sony is no different. Updated HCFL backlights helps drop LCD power consumption by almost 40%, an ambient light sensor adjusts the backlight appropriately and a motion sensor turns off the set after a period of inactivity. Three LCDs, ranging in size between 40, 46, and 52, are going to be available this summer for a yet to be announced price.

Victor JVC has today unveiled a next-generation 32-inch LCD display [PDF] that is the company’s thinnest (7mm) and the world’s lightest (5kg). A first prototype will be showcased during the CES at the Victor / JVC booth this week.

Buy.com has the 24-inch Samsung 2433BW monitor for just $269.99 after a $30 mail-in rebate good until the end of the year. Plus, if you buy it today or tomorrow and pay with Paypal, you’ll get another $10 off. Shipping is free.
The monitor features a 1920×1200 resolution, 5ms response time, 20,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, and analog and DVI inputs. What’s missing? Some might say an HDMI input and built-in speakers – but if that stuff’s not important to you, fire away.
It’s been a while (10/14/08) since Apple first announced the next version of the Cinema Display but with the display now shipping, unboxing pics have surfaced. The LED-powered display looks just like it did when we first peeped it way back on October 14. The display hasn’t revealed any unannounced features but the lack of a power brick is a welcomed surprise. AppleInsider also notes that the pixels aren’t arranged in the iMac’s side-by-side layout but rather employs a diagonal pattern that’s visible when viewed closely. Overall though, it seems like it’s lived up to the Cinema Display pedigree. Full reviews are sure to roll in shortly.

Sharp is looking at a 10% reduction in flat screen production in its overseas factories, a reaction to the cooling economy and a recent lawsuit for price fixing.
Samsung has something special today with the 23-inch 2494HS SyncMaster LCD full HD monitor. It comes packing with HDMI, 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 5ms response time, but most importantly, a 1920 x 1080 resolution. Not only does the monitor have DVI-D and VGA, but also a HDCP friendly HDMI input which will work nicely with computers, Blu-ray players, and yup, even Netflix via Xbox 360. The monitor is expected to carry a MSRP of 40,000 yen ($420 USD) when it drops in the Japanese market in the middle of December.
It’s Samsung Monitor. It’s 22-inches. It has a HDCP DVI input. It has a 1920 x 1200 resolution. It comes out in late November. It will sell for 35,000 yen or $362 USD. Anything else? It’s just a monitor.
Outdated?
Funai Electric Advanced Applied Technology Research Institute, a wholly owned subsidiary of Japanese electronics company Funai (Sylvania, Symphonic, Emerson) has developed a reflective display that, unlike existing reflective LCDs, doesn’t need a backlight.
The company claims their display uses 0.16MW of electricity per square centimeter, which translates back to just 1% of what conventional LCDs need. Reportedly, clarity can still be compared to that of characters printed on a piece of paper. The display uses dyes changing color when exposed to an electric current.
A Sharp big wig, Shigeaki Mizushima, has gone on record stating that his company is committed to developing TVs that consume less energy than current offerings. Sharp has done it in the past by cutting its 2005 TVs’ power consumption in half over model year 2000 and plan on doing it again ’cause it’s the responsible thing to do.
TV sizes are growing to be larger than 30 inches, and the number of TVs is also increasing. However, it’s unjust to simply take it for granted that power consumption should increase as the size of TVs grows, it is important to keep the power consumption of large TVs as low as that of smaller ones.
If there is one thing LCDs are good at, it’s power management. And Sharp knows LCDs.
Hot on the heels of Samsung’s QWXGA 2342BWX LCD monitor, Dell just made its 2048×1152 23-inch monitor available – sort-of. The SP2309W sports a quick 2ms response time and 1000:1 contrast ratio, along with the super-duper resolution, which should satisfy both gamers and corner office types. Unlike the Samsung though, Dell threw in a 2MP camera within the bezel for some impromptu video chatting. So far the monitor is only showing up on Dell’s Canadian site with a shipping date of 1-2 weeks, but a US release/announcement should be right around the corner.
