Yup, Miles Davis is about as far away from Lady Gaga as you can get. Monster Cable has yet another pair of headphones that are emblazoned with a famous musician’s name. And if you were here two sentences ago, you might have guessed that that artist is Miles Davis. You’re a good guesser!

You’ll find the headphones as part of the Miles Davis Tribute Set, which includes said headphones and a super-de-dooper deluxe copy of the jazz man’s famous album Kind of Blue (Note: I know nothing about jazz, but even I have heard of Kind of Blue). This deluxe version comes with a DVD, linear notes, yada yada yada.

So, basically, we’ve got a pair of Monster Cable headphones with a Miles Davis logo on it, and a spiffy version of his best known album. Price? Oh, you know, $400. (Eh, that may seem expensive, but headphones can get very expensive, very fast if you’re not careful.)

No release date, I’m afraid, but it is available for pre-order from Monster Cable’s Web site.

Console-like with web-based setup and simple touch commands? Somehow I am skeptical. It looks like one of those remotes for the extremely nearsighted that you have to hold with both hands and manipulate with your face.

Okay, those don’t exist, but this one is real. It’ll cost $50 and it really does look like something out of the original Star Trek series. They also released some new $100 cables but we’re not going to dignify them with a post.

They have never failed me and I’ve used their products for years. But I won’t spend any money supporting the company anymore. It’s a shame too, ’cause I really trust the products, but I refuse to support the company with my hard earned cash.

That’s who I am. I simply cannot support a company that constantly sues the little guy and hustles overpriced digital cables that offer little to no benefit over $10 options. My decision is solely based on these dick moves by Monster Cable and I’m sure many of you also follow similar sentiments about the company. Thankfully in the vast Internet connected world, there are equally good products available from companies with dramatically better track records.

There is a correlation between cable quality and price, not so much in the digital realm, and generally I don’t mind spending extra cake on the better stuff. Before HDMI took over my A/V setup a few years ago, I would occasionally pick up an analog Monster Cable products in lieu of making the cable myself. The analog cables are priced slightly higher than other high-end cables, but convenence factored in since Monster Cable products are readily available at multiple retail locations. Never once have I used a Monster Cable A/V cable with any thought I wasn’t getting the absolute best quality, which is something I cannot say about bargain brands or Web site specials.

However, I haven’t purchased anything Monster Cable in years. There is something about the company that didn’t sit right with me after a Monster Cable training session during my six year stint at Circuit City. I can’t put my finger on it writing this years later, but it was something about the way the Monster Cable tool spoke about the competing brands and whatnot, along with giving away thousands of dollars of Monster Cable gear so easily. Anyway, that’s about the time when Monster Cable lawsuits began popping up online, showing the company’s darker side.

These lawsuits over trademark infringements have been heavily covered by us and others. Most know about how Monster Cable sues other companies that use the name Monster somewhere. Isn’t it curious though that Monster Cable seemingly only goes after companies smaller than itself and leaves others alone? For instance, Monster Cable filed suit against a mini-golf company, deer salt block products, and recently a Florida-based transmission company all within the last few months. But why not go after Monster Energy drink? Or Pixar for its Monsters, Inc movie? Or even Monster.com? Curious, eh?

Who in their right mind anyway would think that a deer salt block was manufactured by Monster Cable anyway? No one. The same goes for mini golf along with a transmission company. These types of lawsuits are what clog up the legal system and wastes both party’s money.

The fact that the company wants to protect its trademark isn’t the part that sits funny with me. That’s all well and good in this free country of ours. It’s that the company takes a bully approach that’s seemingly designed for quick out of court settlement by sheer intimidation. This tactic was blown wide open when Monster Cable sued Blue Jeans Cable unknowing that its founder was previously a lawyer.

Long story short, the founder, Kurt Denke, sent a well written long legalese letter asking for specific details including engineering drawings and pointing out the errors in Monster Cable’s patent infringement claims. Monster Cable backed down. Thanks to Internet coverage of the entire ordeal, Blue Jeans Cable probably owes Monster Cable money anyway for the great advertising.

But no worries.

The digital revolution and death of brick and mortar retail stores probably isn’t helping Monster Cable’s business. Plus, many consumers simply cannot afford a $140 HDMI cable these days. Hopefully us geek-types are doing our best to educate friends and family that most online cable outlets sell similar HDMI cables for $14 and offer comparable quality ’cause it’s a digital signal.

Gizmodo even ran tests a few years ago with the help of Monster Cable and concluded that “The only people who should buy Monster cable are people who light cigars with Benjamins.” That’s because the cheap options generally perform just as good under real world situations. This is something most of us have been preaching for years and is also one of the main reasons the industry has moved away from analog and into the digital era.

Brick and mortar stores must be the cornerstone of Monster Cable thanks to pushy salesman. It’s much harder to convince consumers to drop $100+ on an HDMI cable online where there are so many bargain options available that are just a click away. Monster Cable is probably feeling the effect of retail sales slowing.

I simply cannot support a company with such business tactics. I’m sure many of you feel the same way. There are plenty of alternatives available. Monoprice is a great source for almost any cable or AV accessory. Even Blue Jeans Cable is a great, but also a tad more expensive, cable outlet. High-end? Check out Analysis Plus for their analog cables. APC and Tripp Lite manufacture great power conditioners and surge suppressors. Simply put, there is no need to support Monster Cable with such a wide range of other options available.

I’m at a point with Monster Cable where I would rather buy a cheap cable from Amazon and not sleep at night wondering if I’m not getting 100% quality than support a company that gets off suing the little guy and connin’ unknowing consumers into purchasing extremely overpriced digital cables.

Come on, really? Monster Cable is like the trust fund douche that drives an Audi, wears Lacrosse, and gets pedicures. He tries so hard to get people to like him, but at the end of day, runs home to his father who happens to be the DA and rats on everyone smoking pot. He just doesn’t get it and neither does Monster Cable who is sueing Monster Transmission for trademark infringement.

The last time we featured a story about Monster Cable suing the little guy, Noel Lee himself (or a PR flack) left a message defending their tactics. But just because a company has the world Monster in its name, doesn’t mean they need to waste precious money or time dealing with a whack company in court. This is a frivolously lawsuit and hopefully the precedent set by previous court battles will allow this case to be thrown out with little cost from Monster Transmission, a Florida-based automotive builder and supplier.

Previous statement left here:

I am aware of your concerns regarding the lawsuit that we filed against Monster Mini Golf, a Rhode Island-based company that franchises miniature golf establishments across the U.S. (currently 24 locations). Suffice to say we take this lawsuit very seriously and filed only as a necessary measure to protect our established trademark rights.

Regardless of what false representations have been circulated about Monster, we are not a faceless corporate giant out to squash legitimate business concerns and rising entrepreneurs. We are in fact, a family-owned company that relies heavily on our brand name and reputation in order to continue serving our customers. We have always tried to provide our customers with the highest performance products at an affordable price. While we are best known for our cable products, we also manufacture high performance accessories in business areas ranging in home theater, computing, gaming, portable entertainment and power management. To protect these business areas, we have sought and been awarded trademarks for each respective category. In addition to the areas above, in the past 30 years, we have also expanded the categories including sports and other lifestyle ventures. According to the trademark law, we must enforce our marks or we will lose them and they will become generic.

We were trying our best to avoid the lawsuit, and we are trying our best to settle the lawsuit.

We appreciate your viewpoints and hope you will review the attached documents to fully understand the facts before making judgments against myself or my company.

http://www.monstercable.com/monster_truth

Monsterously,
Noel Lee
nlee@monstercable.com

So, going off the wording in that message, one can see how Monster Cable sees it within the legal realm to sue Monster Transmission since Monster Cable makes automotive-type parts. You know, speaker cable and such, which is exactly like transmissions.

I haven’t purchased a Monster Cable product ever and constantly pushed alternatives during my tenure at Circuit City. The company is full of themselves and must serve kool-aid out of the water coolers to keep employees. This is insane and infuriating at the same time.

Yeah, we know the image of us with Dre is blurry. We’re waiting on Monster to send us their official shots, too.

A few headphones we’ve already seen and reviewed, a couple of new power centers, and HP branded HDMI cables that are sure to carry a high MSRP. Oh boy. Monster Cable is now going to sell ’speed rated’ USB cables. The thought is that consumers would want a cable that they know will be able to handle all of their digital activities. I apparently didn’t see the punch bowl on my way in.

Monster and HP are joining forces because consumers need trusted brands. Their words. Monster & HP Power and Cables coming soon.

Ludicus! Hell of a lot better than listening to Noel Lee troll on. Anyway, Luda is releasing his next album on Monster’s label on the HDX and Blu-ray format. High-def sound.

Monster Cable’s second foray into the in-ear monitor area is much, much better than their first go-around with the Turbines. Knowing that Monster Cable loves to gouge folks on overpriced cables, one has wonder if their headphones are overpriced as well? Perhaps, but it depends on who you’re asking.

The Beats Tour in-ears look great with a matte red cable that doesn’t seem to tangle, as advertised. They also come with three mushroom-type silicone tips and two sets of tree-like tips. A circular carrying case is also included. It’s well packaged, but overly packaged at the same time. For a pair of in-ear monitors, Monster wasted a ton of resources and money packaging these things. The same could be said for their Turbine in-ears too. This isn’t to say that Monster Cable is the only company guilty of such a travesty, but it’s all so frivolous that I just had to say something.

Aside from the packaging, the Tours perform admirably. But like the Turbines, the tips that come with the Tours degrade the overall listening experience. They simply do not isolate well enough for one to hear the drivers pump out the jams, which they seem to do quite well. Yes, I know how to properly insert in-ears. And I’m even using the biggest mushroom tips and tree tips that come with the Tours. They stink. When I snap my fingers I can hear them clearly even when I have music playing. Monster really needs to focus on improving the tips they provide because they’re 0/2 so far.

I don’t like having to turn up the volume beyond a comfortable level but I’m forced to do so with the Tours. And it all boils down to the seal. The drivers are loud and clear and don’t distort when they get cranked up. The overall sound quality from the Tours seem to be good, but I can’t give a full and honest review when I can’t get a proper seal. They hit on the low-end and snap on the highs, but I have to crank up the volume to really tell, and I don’t like having to do that. To give you a sense of scale, I have to hover around level seven or eight on my MacBook whereas with my Ultimate Ears, Shures, and Etymotics I set it around level two or three to get the same output.

Maybe my ears aren’t meant to mesh with the tips that Monster provides, but I don’t have any issues with all of the other aforementioned manufacturers. The Tours are really nice in-ear headphones and the wiring is crazy cool, but without proper isolation they’re probably not worth the $150 price tag. Monster Cable should consider cutting costs on the packaging and opting for better tips.

Three hundred fifty dollars for a set of over-the-ear headphones is a lot whether or not we’re in a recession. But the Beats by Dr. Dre are a great set of cans that don’t need a headphone amp to rattle your noggin. They look great in black, but how much would you pay for a pair of white ones? Monster and some fellow named Ron Herman believe the resident douchebags of Los Angeles will throw down $699 for a pair. I understand these are limited edition, but come on! The Beats are great, but they’re not worth $700. Sadly, these LE Beats will more than likely sell out.

I’m not really sure how I feel about these in-ear Beats by Dr. Dre from Monster Cable. The Turbines that were announced last month were so-so compared to other in-ears at the same price point and for $150 I’d probably recommend a pair of Shures, Etymotics or Ultimate Ears over these ones. But the over-the-ear Beats are actually pretty good headphones, so I’ll have to wait and see what the Tours are made of when they start shipping in one to two weeks.

The best part of the Beats Tour seems to be the tangle-free cable that took 10 years to develop.

Monster could really cut down on the packaging of their headphones as well. The Turbines came in the biggest box of all time and it appears the Tours do as well.

Instead of sending the guy packing and with the advice to buy a new remote – like Monster Cable did with me – they shipped him a brand spanking new remote. Yeah, I’m still a little burned that Monster didn’t do anything for me so it’s nice to see a company actually care about their customers. Oh, and by the way, the Monster Remote is made by Logitech just supported by a Monster Cable. Food for thought.

Now that I’ve had a couple days with the Turbines, I think it’s time for a full review.

I’m sad to say that my initial praise may have been premature having listened to a few CDs (I had to open up moving boxes in my apt to find one) and comparing these against my Shure SCL3s and Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pros. I also brought in my secret weapon Dave R. to consult. He’s a professional sound engineer who specializes in monitors and has toured with The Cure, The Used, Linda Ronstadt, Interpol, Yellowcard and Fall Out Boy, so he knows this stuff inside and out.

With any in-ear monitor the biggest challenge is to find a tip that actually isolates and blocks everything out. I’ve found that foam tips work best, but the Turbines come with two types (trees and mushrooms) each having three sizes. You might as well skip the mushrooms because they don’t block anything out.

The Turbines impressed me because the highs snapped hard without any distortion, but the low-end just drops out. I found one track where the low-end could be felt, but couldn’t replicate that feeling or experience with any other track that I know has lots of low-end bass. Dave’s first response was just that, so we went through a number of tracks before concluding that the Turbines missed the mark there. I will, however, continue to try and replicate the thump I felt from Akon’s “I Wanna Love You.” But, as I said before, the highs snap and kick much ass.

Monster’s first effort into the in-ear monitor is a good start, but they’ve got some work to do. Compared to my Shures (these aren’t perfect, but they sound great from low to high) and UEs (these are amazing) the Turbines lack the full body experience. If Monster is as passionate about the true audiophile experience as Kevin Lee says they are, then I’m sure they can scale the experience down to an in-ear monitor. But for now, the Turbines are not it. Monster really needs to start making custom ear moldings for their monitors to take advantage of the drivers that are powering the Turbines. It’s the only way to get a proper seal. The Beats by Dr. Dre, on the other hand, are fantastic.

It’s become apparent that Monster is getting into the high-end audiophile game with the launch of the Beats earlier in the year and now the in-ear Turbine ‘speakers’. I’ve only had an hour or two to check them out, but I can honestly say that I’m pleasantly surprised at the performance of the Turbines thus far.

I’ve always been a proponent that you shouldn’t be doing something you’re not passionate about and Kevin Lee, Noel Lee’s son, is obviously passionate about what he does and I have the utmost respect for that.

“My father and I have always wanted to make a headphone that didn’t sound like a “headphone”. We have the up most respect for all the headphone companies that are in business, because we now know it is not easy. That said, we are humbly proud of what we’ve achieve in Monster Turbines. We only hope everyone else agrees”

You can really tell the difference between these and the shitty earbuds you get pre-packaged with all the MP3 players on the market like Apple and Microsoft’s earbuds. The Turbines really are high-end-like audiophile buds at a price point that’s not outrageous at $150.

The mid-range is crisp, but I’ve mainly been paying attention to the lows and highs. It really thumps on the low-end bass and reminds me of my high school days when I had a high-end stereo system in my car. The highs don’t get distorted when you crank up the volume like they do on other earbuds.

However, the Turbines aren’t going to replace your super high-end Shures or Etymotics with custom molded tips, but they do a very good job of isolating outside noise with the tips that are provided. Like I said before, you’ll notice the difference when playing higher bit rate tracks.

We’ll have a full review when I get a chance to use them on some more high-end tracks than what I have on my iPhone or laptop. But I like them so far and I’m used to high-end in-ears if that tells you anything.

Brisbane, CA, November 11, 2008 – Monster, well known for working with legendary
musicians on countless productions recorded with Monster Cable and Monster Power
products, is proud to announce the introduction of its new “Turbine In-Ear Speakers,” the
world’s first high-performance in-ear headphones with specially engineered drivers that deliver
impeccable audiophile-quality sound.

With the ever-increasing popularity of portable media devices, more and more people are using
headphones for music listening, making them the most important connection between people and
their music. Monster’s new Turbine In-Ear Speakers were personally designed by the Head
Monster Noel Lee, undergoing three years of rigorous research, development, and refinement.
The advanced design and engineering of Monster Turbines offer music lovers a new way to
enjoy big speaker sound in a compact in-ear headphone design.

Sound So Big We Had To Call Them Speakers
Monster Turbine In-Ear Speakers feature 8mm drivers precision-engineered for superb sonic
detail that delivers the big sound, deep bass, and clarity that you’d expect from full size high-end
speakers. To further enhance the listening experience, a selection of sound isolating eartips in
multiple sizes offer a secure custom fit to seal out unwanted external noise. In addition, the
advanced metal housing design minimizes unwanted vibration for even clearer sound.
Monster’s advanced cable technologies also enable Turbines to deliver superior performance.
Patented FluxTube delivers more accurate audio, while MicroStrand conductors ensure
maximum cable flexibility and better signal transfer.

Noel Lee, Head Monster, noted: “Life is too short to listen to bad headphones. Unfortunately,
ordinary headphones simply can’t reproduce the deep bass and rich highs of full-size speaker
systems. Monster is on a mission to make headphones sound better, and our new Turbine In-Ear
Speakers allow people to hear truly remarkable sound from in-ear headphones. Hearing is
believing. After all, the human ear can discern much more than any technical measuring device,
and the performance of Monster Turbines needs to be heard to be believed.”

Monster Turbine In-Ear Speakers will be rolled out in limited production beginning in
November, for a suggested retail price of $149.95 per pair. The debut of Turbine In-Ear Speakers
is part of Monster’s commitment to improve the quality of the portable audio experience,
complementing the company’s recent introduction of Beats™ by Dr. Dre™ , a brand new line
of headphones co-developed with legendary artist and producer Dr. Dre.

My second Monster Central Control System AVL 300 universal remote just died shortly after one year of use. The first one did the same but sucked it up then and purchased a second one; not anymore. To be honest, the remote seemed nice at first (my original review), but shortly after a month or two of use, it began to show it’s true evil Monster Cable side. The charging system sucks, the remote is fragile and frail, the PC software is pathetic joke, and worst of all now, it won’t do anything.

I just called Monster Cable for advice, but because I was 2 months out of warranty, they simply told me to buy a new one. Sorry, Noel Lee, I did that last time and I won’t do it again. I’m growing up and will purchase a real remote from a company that doesn’t own a NFL stadium and sue the little guys.

Monster Cable setup a mobile test lab at CEDIA this year, challenging any cable manufacturer to a head-to-head battle. Only one attempted to enter, but didn’t see disclaimer that Monster wanted 4m cables or longer in the match up, and that particular maker didn’t have HDMI cables that long.

I know what’s yelled whenever a Monster Cable HDMI story comes up: Monoprice-4-evah playa! I hear ya, but take a look at what the test equipment that Monster Cable employs to prove their cables are the best. It impressed me.

Monster Cable provided an engineer for some hands-on tests. The unit on the left simulates bandwidth, with the number in the top left representing the number of bytes being ran over one of the three HDMI channels. (multiple that number by three for the total cable capability) The monitor on the right provides a real-time image of the HDMI signal. Ideally, a cable should have narrow bars with a large center ‘eye.’ The bigger the bars and the smaller the center eye, means more noise in the digital signal thanks to lower quality manufacturing and parts.

The way the engineer explained it to me is that viewers will not notice the difference in short runs because of the loss can be compensated by the HDTVs processors. Apparently, with longer cables, the extra noise is more noticeable and therefore the need for higher-quality long digital cables arise.

Okay, onto the tests.

The first test was ‘brand-x’ 4m cable. It passed the 2.23GB test which is fine for high-def cable TV.

The cable failed the 4.95GB test though, which according to Monster Cable means viewers will notice digital artifacts from Blu-ray players and PS3s.

The Monster HDMI cable passed the same 4.95GB that the off-brand failed. The lines on the monitor are a lot tighter, representing less digital fluctuations.

The engineer even threw the test thingie up to 14.85GB total throughput, and sure ‘nough, their cable passed the test. Notice that the lines are larger though.

I know this was their test equipment and it could have been rigged, but I have personally noticed digital artifacts on long HDMI runs so the company’s claims do have some weight with me. Monster Cable even said that on short runs, digital loss is cut to a minimum. This hands-on experience didn’t swayed my opinion ’bout the company, but rather open my eyes to the different HDMI options.

So if you can excuse me, I have a kool-aid mustache I need to wash off.
